Annoyed that its mostly people in safe jobs that are calling for full lockdown

Both mine and my husbands jobs are at severely at risk as we both work in hospitality. I am very swiftly losing patience with people in cushy jobs, where they can easily work from home and where there is little risk of redundancy calling for another full lockdown. Feel like we are being thrown to the wolves! Anyone in the same boat want to vent!

My DH’s work has dropped off the edge of a cliff, we’ve just sold his car....I still think we need a more significant lockdown as I don’t want to prolong this and I don’t want people die en masse either from this or because there’s not enough beds. I’m pissed off we didn’t act sooner, and enforce the less stringent rules more (and that includes you in hospitality- you can disinfect tableS all you want but if you’re letting people socialise in large groups, pissed and with no distancing inside then you are part of the problem) if we had we wouldn’t be here needing a full lockdown.

You need to channel your anger towards the government for not properly supporting the sector.

puffinsseagulls · 14/10/2020 23:05

It's an absolute joke why the Government hasn't sorted out this test track and trace given all the time they've had on it, and the taxpayers money they've wasted Angry

Oilyoilyoilgob · 14/10/2020 23:06

I’m self employed. Couldn’t work for five months due to nature of my business and wasn’t eligible for help due to not enough accounts and no benefits due to husbands wage. So what I earned I’ve missed as it all went back into the house via food/animal food shopping and bills. It was a rubbish five months, I have less clients now and now this talk of a circuit break too.

I’m trying my best to keep ok and there are people so much worse off but I miss earning my takings and having the independence that went with it. Worked since I was 18 and I’m not used to feeling like this ☹️

Mintychoc1 · 14/10/2020 23:08

I’m a doctor and vehemently opposed to another lockdown.

rorosemary · 14/10/2020 23:09

Don't be angry with the people who want a lockdown, be angry with the people who don't distance or practice hygiene when they can and spread the virus.

AibuTellMe · 14/10/2020 23:11

My jobs guaranteed safe I've even been offered more hours, which I declined as Im already nearly having a breakdown. YANBU OP

Audreyseyebrows · 14/10/2020 23:13

My job is ‘cushy’ I guess. I’m not at risk of losing my job. I’m a nurse.
Dh and dd jobs aren’t safe.

I don’t know how I feel to be honest. Just exhausted.

StoneofDestiny · 14/10/2020 23:14

Channel your anger to the government who have mishandled this crisis from the start.

BrummyMum1 · 14/10/2020 23:14

Literally don’t know a single person calling for a full lockdown again.

BeepBoopBop · 14/10/2020 23:14

I don't understand why such huge numbers of people won't modify their behaviour and thus prevent the need for another lockdown. Also, those that think we should lock down, can effectively lock down now? We don't have to wait until we are told FGS. Had entirely this discussion earlier today with a highly intelligent friend who was planning various visits to friends and family... Fully expecting lock downs, fully understanding why, fully supportive of doing everything necessary, didn't occur to start locking down now PRIOR to being ordered. Frustrating really.

Audreyseyebrows · 14/10/2020 23:15

Btw, I do completely sympathise with you. We are scared for the future of DH and Dd jobs. And just scared for the future in general.

Livelovebehappy · 14/10/2020 23:16

A two week lockdown is not going to get rid of covid. It will reduce cases, but as soon as we come out of lockdown again, the infections and deaths will obviously increase. Then a month later we will be back into lockdown. So I get Op’s concerns. We’re not just talking about a two week national lockdown are we? It’s going to be lockdowns happening every month or so - how can businesses survive on that basis? lockdown is the silent killer. For every person who dies from covid there are many others dying due to not receiving treatment, ie cancer sufferers. And people taking their lives due to depression and MH issues when losing their jobs or struggling with the isolation.

hibbledibble · 14/10/2020 23:17

Hmm. Not sure if yabu or not.

No one wants a lockdown. It's a necessary evil, as the alternative was unthinkable (500,000+ deaths in the UK alone).

Those of us who worked caring and treating those who were infected during the first wave, like I did, know how terrible it was. I have been a qualified doctor for years, but never saw anything like it, and hope never to again. I really, really don't want us to be where we were before, not because I am thinking of myself, but because of the many people who died terrible deaths, and the many families torn apart. Reading statistics and news articles doesn't give a full picture of just how grim it was in the hospitals.

I hope another lockdown isn't necessary, but if it is needed to stop a horrific death toll, then so be it.

GirlCrush · 14/10/2020 23:17

We will likely spend next year plodding along like this too

We had our chance to lockdown.... much much tighter than we actually did I. March. That was our chance it wasn’t severe enough though

So it’s going to be this now. Until covid does it there’s an effective vaccine. Not a vaccine, but an EFFECTIVE vaccine.

Everything has been so half assed

Bramleyapples13 · 14/10/2020 23:17

I'm a delivery driver and I completely agree. The clapping for heroes has well and truly disappeared as well!

User3405678 · 14/10/2020 23:17

*Don't you want to save your job?

Temporary close. Covid contained. Open back up*

God how out of touch with reality can someone be!
I have friends who's small businesses (that they invested life savings into) will never open back up and many other friends who have been made redundant because the company they work for have took too much of a loss this year to afford to keep them on. I can't imagine many of them being able to find other hospitality jobs any time soon. You most definitely are not BU OP.

GirlCrush · 14/10/2020 23:18

Covid DIES not does!

SheepandCow · 14/10/2020 23:18

Don't people want to get back to normal? As soon as possible? Why drag it out?

The only way to get back to normal is containment measures.

Strict and therefore ultimately shorter lockdown.

Restricted borders excepting essential imports like food (and proper quarantine where necessary).

And a properly working test, track, and trace system.

We've wasted 8-9 months already.
Why don't we just get on with getting on top of it asap.

The sooner we deal with it, the sooner we can go back to normality.

Ok no international travel for a year but surely that's worth it for everything else to be open.

LouHotel · 14/10/2020 23:20

My hotel stayed open for key workers and we sold 50 to 80 rooms a night on staffing of 10 people whilst everyone else was furloughed.

Not only do I not want more of my colleagues to lose their jobs I cannot work like that again my body was damn near broken from the stress.

Lynseyhaslett27 · 14/10/2020 23:21

I live in N.ireland and I work in hospitality sector n we close 6pm on Friday for 4 weeks, this will b reviewed aswell so no cert it cud b longer

tortoiseshell1985 · 14/10/2020 23:21

I have a meeting tomorrow to tell me if I'm redundant. If I am, I really don't know what to do as no one is hiring in my sector

seriouslynotserious · 14/10/2020 23:23

I lost my business this summer due to this. I have worked so hard and sacrificed a lot. My business focuses on tourism and as you know, the 2 week quarantine didn't help.

SheepandCow · 14/10/2020 23:24

If we'd taken containment measures we'd be back to normal. What do you think happens if we keep on as we are?

Reality? Look at the countries who've done something about this. Their economies are open. Jobs and businesses open. Schools, hospitals, shops, offices, pubs, bars, restaurants, gyms, hairdressers, casinos, theatres, entertainment and sporting venues. All open.

That's how you keep them going - by containing the infectious virus.

So we continue as we have done and more businesses close and jobs lost? No thanks. I'd rather do something about it. Is it a English thing, lack of foresight? Perhaps I have an undiscovered Scottish heritage? They seem to get it more than us.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 14/10/2020 23:25

I also think those people who want a lockdown over half-term wouldn't like it if they were told the time had to be taken off their annual leave allowance, but they're happy for school staff to have their holiday at a time when they wouldn't be able to do anything, or go anywhere.

Unsure33 · 14/10/2020 23:26

@jarrowsparrow

France have gone into emergency status we were not the only country struggling with this .

If there was a magic answer many world leaders would be using it .

Plus our population is not as compliant or obedient as many others.
