To think this was petty

I was just at my local coop, I used the self service check out and selected one bag as I thought all my items would fit in one, as I put them in it wasn’t going to fit, I had already paid so just grabbed an extra bag as there was no option to pay for the extra bag as I would have to remove all my shopping and had nowhere to put it, yes I know I should have paid but I had just spent £30 in the shop so for the sake of an extra bag I didn’t see the big deal, anyway as I went to walk out the security shouted at me in front of everyone that I had taken two bags and paid for one! I was made to go back and empty out all my shopping. AIBU for thinking this was really petty? Considering how much I had just spent in the shop it all seemed a bit over the top

It's theft. You didn't pay for the extra bag.

Lolaloveslemonade · 14/10/2020 20:59

Why didn’t you just give them 10p or whatever the extra bag cost?

slipperywhensparticus · 14/10/2020 21:00

You scan the bag its what the barcode is for

Nanny0gg · 14/10/2020 21:00

Surely you just scan it and pay for it?

purpleme12 · 14/10/2020 21:00

I didn't pay for a bag once. same kind of things I'd put no bag in then realised I needed one. The shop assistant came after me. I thought what's the big deal it's 5p but then again can't get het up about it after all

Givemeabreak88 · 14/10/2020 21:01

Because I didn’t have cash and tbh I doubt they would have taken it without putting it through the machine, there was a queue so would have to wait which obviously at that point I felt extremely humiliated so wanted to leave ASAP!

OP posts:
Oysterbabe · 14/10/2020 21:01

You can't just steal things, irrespective of how much you spent.

Givemeabreak88 · 14/10/2020 21:01

He waited until I had left the machine to walk out so someone else was at that machine and like I said there was a queue.

Well you realised your shopping wouldn't fit before you walked away

And of course they waited for you to walk away first. They had to be sure you was actually going to walk away without paying for it.

Why exactly?

Nottherealslimshady · 14/10/2020 21:06

Well you were still at the machine, it would have taken seconds to scan and touch your card. If you haven't got the balls to get caught then dont take things you haven't paid for.

MsEllany · 14/10/2020 21:07

Well of course he waited till you left, it’s not theft if you go back and pay for it Confused

PurpleDaisies · 14/10/2020 21:07

Why couldn’t you have pressed the call button for a member of staff?

You can’t just take an extra bag without paying. I’m amazed you can’t see security were totally right to challenge you for stealing from the shop.

Givemeabreak88 · 14/10/2020 21:08

I’m only telling people the reason why I didn’t go back and pay for it because there was already someone there as he waited till I left. There wasn’t really an option to pay as I would have to queue up again and he asked for the bag, he didn’t say pay.

OP posts:
Mittens030869 · 14/10/2020 21:08

That’s the reason I don’t like self service right now. But regardless of this, you should have paid for the extra bag.

The best thing is to go shopping with your own bags.

CoffeeRunner · 14/10/2020 21:09

Where was the second bag? I’m not quite seeing this scenario. Bags are always right by the checkout where I shop, so you scan it when you pick it up.

And usually, on the inside of the bottom folded bit of the bag for life is a second (different) barcode. That is used when the shops fulfil their promise of replacing the bags free, if they get damaged.

emilyfrost · 14/10/2020 21:11

YABVU. It doesn’t matter how little the item cost, it’s theft. You stole a bag.

They weren’t being petty, you were breaking the law for your own convenience.

bethany39 · 14/10/2020 21:11

But you must have realised you needed the extra bag before you left the checkout so you should have just scanned it through in another transaction?

Givemeabreak88 · 14/10/2020 21:13

Yes but like I said all the items needed to be removed from the checkout for me to scan the other and I had nowhere to put them. But fine I get it, as if no one here has ever took a bag they didn’t pay for Hmm

Hannah12345625 · 14/10/2020 21:13

Yabu you didn't pay for the bag, I don't understand how you can justify not paying for the bag 🤷‍♀️

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 14/10/2020 21:13

You were at self service. You didnt need to queue again. You selected 1 bag, started scanning and putting stuff in the bag. When you decided to needed another bag, you pick it up and scan it. The bags have barcodes. You just scan the 2nd one and start filling it.
If you scanned all your stuff through and waited till after you had paid to pack it all, then you would still be standing at the till packing so could have scanned a bag and tapped your card.

You dont get to just take things and the whole point of this is that you should be bringing your own bags. Get some fold away ones and keep them in your handbag.

mineofuselessinformation · 14/10/2020 21:14

You took it and knew you hadn't paid.
The security guard couldn't stop you until you left the building because that's the law.
You could have chosen to ask for help.
You didn't.
You got caught and felt embarrassed - you deserved to.

ScarMatty · 14/10/2020 21:14

I never pay for the bags
