To think this was petty

I was just at my local coop, I used the self service check out and selected one bag as I thought all my items would fit in one, as I put them in it wasn’t going to fit, I had already paid so just grabbed an extra bag as there was no option to pay for the extra bag as I would have to remove all my shopping and had nowhere to put it, yes I know I should have paid but I had just spent £30 in the shop so for the sake of an extra bag I didn’t see the big deal, anyway as I went to walk out the security shouted at me in front of everyone that I had taken two bags and paid for one! I was made to go back and empty out all my shopping. AIBU for thinking this was really petty? Considering how much I had just spent in the shop it all seemed a bit over the top

This thread is just...smh

Shop staff/security handled the scenario in an unprofessional manner.without a doubt.
Equally,you stole the bag.
Perhaps the security will be advised about their dealing with customers more quietly in future but at least it has made you think twice about doing it again.😀

My little boy inadvertently nicked a cardigan by grabbing it from his pushchair as we went past a rack of clothes. The alarm went off as we exited the shop, and the security guard checked my bag then waved us off. It was only when I was lifting DS out of the pushchair to out him in his car seat, I realised he was clutching a stolen cardigan. I returned it and the alarm went off again as I went back into the shop. It was embarrassing all round so I can empathise with the OP - except her theft wasn't accidental by the sound of it.

Howlooseisyourgoose · 15/10/2020 11:34

@Leimarel I don’t think it’s ever embarrassing to return inadvertently stolen items. The staff were probably surprised and happy that you returned it.

MsEllany · 15/10/2020 11:38

So for next time OP, pack your stuff in the new bag, remove, then scan a completely different bag and pay 10p.

I think his reaction was OTT but your reasoning is not valid.

Leimarel · 15/10/2020 11:43

@Howlooseisyourgoose the embarrassment was the alarm going off and hordes of shoppers staring at me Grin. I felt that everyone was thinking "THIEF!!!"

Customer services were really nice - and surprised that I'd returned the item.

It’s a 5p bag, it’s hardly crime of the century

Interesting @Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou. So where do you draw the line at something being of an appropriate value not to steal?

To me, £5 is absolutely nothing, if I didn’t have it, I wouldn’t miss it in the slightest. Would it be ok for me to steal something for £5? Can I steal a bar of chocolate? It’s only 80p, hardly the crime of the century...

In some stores you can’t scan the bag.

You can scan bags in all stores with self service tills. It also gives you an option to punch in a number.

@BagThiefForLife I’d love you to enlighten me in what you think you know about me with “your name says it all”.

Maybe this did happen to you but it’s never happened to me nor have I heard of it happening to others so I don’t think it balances out. It did sound like a tall tale though so I apologise that it’s not and I mistook it.

flaviaritt · 15/10/2020 14:32

Eh? So you take something from a shop without paying, and then don’t like it when you are stopped for doing so? This forum really is batshit.

YANBU I never pay for them 😬 it's 10p not going to bring the business down

The money goes to charity.

That's happened to me before. I typically just speak to a cashier and they tell me it's okay and then let anyone who needs to know, know.

But then I have also offered more than 5 p when I only have a pound coin and can't wait in line, so I think it's seen as being honest vs. not.
