To think this was petty

Givemeabreak88 · 14/10/2020 20:56

I was just at my local coop, I used the self service check out and selected one bag as I thought all my items would fit in one, as I put them in it wasn’t going to fit, I had already paid so just grabbed an extra bag as there was no option to pay for the extra bag as I would have to remove all my shopping and had nowhere to put it, yes I know I should have paid but I had just spent £30 in the shop so for the sake of an extra bag I didn’t see the big deal, anyway as I went to walk out the security shouted at me in front of everyone that I had taken two bags and paid for one! I was made to go back and empty out all my shopping. AIBU for thinking this was really petty? Considering how much I had just spent in the shop it all seemed a bit over the top

You definitely did do it ‘deliberate 😆

Take your own bags, mate. ’

BoomBoomsCousin · 14/10/2020 22:58

Rich Tories and “the government” (even with Boris in charge) are not synonymous. Also, bag charges were brought in by the very non-Tory Welsh and Scottish (& NI if I recall correctly) regional governments years before Tory England did it.

BLASTPROCESSING · 14/10/2020 22:59

"@BLASTPROCESSING I believe it’s just another way of the government making money out of us.

Do explain to us how the government make money from the plastic bag charge. I’m fascinated."

Don't know why you're asking me, I didn't say it.

Winebottle · 14/10/2020 23:02

I've done the same. Have also not paid for other items out of frustration if they won't scan in.

The security guard was a jobsworth but you have to take it on the chin. You ran the risk of being caught and you got caught. You can't blame the security guard for that.

MrsMayo · 14/10/2020 23:03

If I was a security guard I woul not be chasing people for a stolen carrier bag, I woul be a rubbish security guard.

Islagray11 · 14/10/2020 23:06

I know what you mean! It was only 1 bag. I definitely wouldn't be calling someone out over a carrier bag!

I always pay for them as I worry about everything, but I don't think my partner has ever paid for one! Just takes them every time.

Ninjamomma · 14/10/2020 23:06

Makes me laugh that people come on to ask if people agree/disagree with something they think/have done and then seem to be absolutely astonished and surprised when people don't agree with them and get all huffy about it - why post asking if you're unreasonable if you aren't willing to accept people might say you are?

Joe50 · 14/10/2020 23:07

I would have done the same. It was down to circumstance that you took it, it wasn't intentional.

UniversalAunt · 14/10/2020 23:08

Very petty! Over a 5p bag seems so outrageous to me, how is it even effecting him??

The security guard is doing his job, that is how this affects him.

Seemingly, 5p is a petty sum, but what if I move the line to say ‘£10 for a bottle of gin seems so outrageous to me, how is my taking this affecting anyone else? ‘ If I were sneaking this out with the rest of my shopping, how would it be wrong to challenge me about taking something without paying for it?

The self service tills offer customers the opportunity to take & buy bags at the beginning & end of the payment process, & buy a bag again before moving off. It’s made as easy as possible to comply.

Me, if I were the manager & saw you do this, I’d catch you by the door & rattle the charity tin at you for a generous contribution because you do know that you were in the wrong but miffed that you got caught. But there are strict procedures for detaining people who are thought to be shoplifting, so really you got off but very embarrassed.

Would you do the same thing again?

Hopeisathingwithfeathers · 14/10/2020 23:10

I had similar once - practically tackled by outraged elderly Sainsbury's worker as I had apparently paid for 2 bags but taken 3. Complete error in my case and I thought it was completely pathetic that she even bothered to mention it.

Revealall · 14/10/2020 23:11

You lot are as loopy as a 70’s cardi.

Of course it’s petty.
I’ve been on buses where the driver has let me of the fare, shops that let me off a small amount of change, given so eone else’s parking ticket, and a million other kind gestures.
Makes all the difference when people act like decent human beings instead of rules is rules bollocks.

Domainian · 14/10/2020 23:11

Sorry but you’re in the wrong. I get why it seemed minor at the time but that’s like helping yourself to a few choc bars at the checkout for free as you’d spent £X in the shop.

If they start making allowances, everyone will start doing it

MadameMeursault · 14/10/2020 23:16

It’s the law that they charge you for bags. If they let you have a bag for nothing they’re breaking the law. Ffs, how can you not know this?

The difference is you probably weren't sneaky about those things and then stamped your feet when you got caught.

There’s Tory supporters in every country, lots of them involved in these businesses. Retailers aren’t required by law to give the money to charity, they’re only “encouraged” to. So the government brought in a charge that makes retailers even more money but they get nothing out of it? Those in power do nothing unless it benefits them. The charge must benefit them in some way or it wouldn’t have been introduced.
Twillow · 14/10/2020 23:29

You might call it petty, but it shows a weak attitude towards honesty. You knew there is a charge for each bag but you decided 'it didn't matter'. Of course it does -where do you draw the line on shoplifting /stealing which is taking something without paying for it?

cali2000 · 14/10/2020 23:31

There are bigger things to worry about. Sure you should have scanned the bag but not worth the public humiliation

snackarella · 14/10/2020 23:38

I literally cannot believe everyone is branding you a thief!!!!

I'd have done exactly the same - it happens all the time, it's no drama and while he was wagging his finger at you he probably missed someone running out with an armful of fillet steaks!!!

mineofuselessinformation · 14/10/2020 23:41

Maybe a bus driver has let a passenger off the fare, but for all you know, they may have paid it for them....
I remember standing crying at a car park office at a hospital (dd1 was very seriously ill and I had gone to see them - couldn't stay overnight due to another child at home) and the attendant let me off the odd change I owed. It was still £17. I was crying because it had been a difficult day, card payments weren't accepted then, and it was more than I expected.
It doesn't mean I didn't owe the money, just that someone was very kind to me.

Imworthit · 14/10/2020 23:43

@Oysterbabe

You can't just steal things, irrespective of how much you spent.
You can just steal things, that's how stealing works 😂🤣

On a serious note, I'd have done the same. The security guy is a jobs worth. He could have quietly told you to pay the extra 10p. Not make a public fool of you. He was probably in a shitty mood. Even mini stores of chain shops can lose a grand of stock with no issue. Those bags are super marked up. If I worked with him I'd have told him to wind his neck in. Massive over reaction.

Imworthit · 14/10/2020 23:47

I know loads of people in jail for plastic bag theft. It's a real problem. Ruining our young ones. Get a grip.
MiddleClassProblem · 14/10/2020 23:47

@Imworthit total gateway crime

GabsAlot · 14/10/2020 23:49

Wow you sound perfect. Jesus would be so proud of your high morals..... Maybe work on the judgemental part tho 😂
