To think this was petty

I was just at my local coop, I used the self service check out and selected one bag as I thought all my items would fit in one, as I put them in it wasn’t going to fit, I had already paid so just grabbed an extra bag as there was no option to pay for the extra bag as I would have to remove all my shopping and had nowhere to put it, yes I know I should have paid but I had just spent £30 in the shop so for the sake of an extra bag I didn’t see the big deal, anyway as I went to walk out the security shouted at me in front of everyone that I had taken two bags and paid for one! I was made to go back and empty out all my shopping. AIBU for thinking this was really petty? Considering how much I had just spent in the shop it all seemed a bit over the top

Because it’s always confused the till when I’ve tried.

Then don't use them, leave them free for us folk that can scan and pack. No malice intended, I am sure you are lovely but it gives me the rage watching people take twice as long as the rest of us 😁

pictish · 14/10/2020 21:44

I love a good ‘it’s theft!’ thread. Hehe.

copperoliver · 14/10/2020 21:45

I would have asked to give all the shopping back, got a refund and gone to another shop. X

longwayoff · 14/10/2020 21:45

Dont worry, I got charged twice for my one bag last week so shopworld is quits now.

GirlCrush · 14/10/2020 21:46

yes, its the law

bags have to be paid for.

Secrets2020 · 14/10/2020 21:48

You knew the bags cost money. Just like you knew your shopping cost money. Would you walk out with 2 cans of 10p beans when you only paid for one thinking 'it's only a 10p can of beans!'

No. You wouldn't.

Get a grip.

Waveysnail · 14/10/2020 21:49

U pack shopping. Pop on the floor. Scan another bag and pay for with card. Not hard

SquirrelFan · 14/10/2020 21:49

Good lord, I can't believe how everyone is piling on the op! I believe it was a daft mistake with little margin for fixing it. The shop should make every effort to get their money and at the same time not alienate customers. An 'excuse me, miss,' while speaking quietly to the op and leading her to an empty till to pay for the bag would have achieved that - probably with the op apologising profusely. Now she never wants to go back. Even if she stole a bag each time, the shop would still make 29.95! Stealing is wrong, of course it is, but the shop is cutting off its nose to spite its face.

KillingEve20 · 14/10/2020 21:49

The charge for the plastic bag is just to discourage people from using them. I have in my time taken a bag or 2 and not paid Hmm. It’s hardly the crime of the century, really security guards at shops know most the local shop lifters and keep an eye on them, a 5/10p plastic bag is the least of their concerns, so it’s likely he only did this to embarrass you Confused

PumpkinetChocolat · 14/10/2020 21:51

I can't believe how everyone is piling on the op!

well, the OP did ask and refuse to take any post on board, just the solitary one agreeing with her...it's hardly piling on to have an opinion.

pictish · 14/10/2020 21:51

I always have to have my canvas bags at Tesco ‘verified’ - even though I bought them in Tesco. They are Tesco bags but the Tesco till doesn’t like them. The poor till person has to come over and do the swipe and tap. Every time.

MiddleClassProblem · 14/10/2020 21:52

Ok so the thing is, sure it was just 10p and an inconvenience for you to have to sort it, but of a palaver to go through to pay for it separately so you didn’t.

But you still took something without paying, so I’m not sure how a security guard I unreasonable to pull you up on it. Sure they could let it go but either way you still did it and can’t get whiny about being embarrassed because they didn’t.

DeliciouslyFemale · 14/10/2020 21:56

I believe it was a daft mistake with little margin for fixing it. The shop should make every effort to get their money and at the same time not alienate customers.

But it wasn’t a mistake. The OP deliberately took the bag with no intention of paying for it. That’s shoplifting. Doesn’t matter how much it costs. I’m sure the shop would rather not have people stealing from their shop, rather than alienate a thief.

DeliciouslyFemale · 14/10/2020 21:57

I mean, worrying about alienating a thief.

MrsGrindah · 14/10/2020 21:57

Hang on, so we all have to pay for bags but you don’t? Have I got that right?

MiddleClassProblem · 14/10/2020 21:58

It’s a bit like going over your time on a parking meter by a few minutes. Sure they could give you leeway but you still didn’t pay for the time you are using so if you get caught out you just have to suck it up.

Chloemol · 14/10/2020 22:01

When you realised you needed a new bag scan it, or call a staff member over what you did was theft

As an adult you are aware all actions have consequences it’s your fault if you felt embarrassed

NotOfThisWorld · 14/10/2020 22:01

I've done that loads of times in coop. I just put an extra bag on next time. You can't pay for a single bag separately.

LindaEllen · 14/10/2020 22:02

It's something in the shop that's not free. You have to purchase a bag from them. The bag is just another item that you opt to buy, like anything else off the shelf.

You might as well say well I spent £100 on my shopping so just grabbed a bag of crisps for free on the way out.

The items aren't free, so of course you have to bloody pay for them!

i have never known such a bunch of sanctimonious, pious, smug arseholes as there are on this thread. FFS!

HaggieMaggie · 14/10/2020 22:05

I once wanted two bottles of champagne but I only paid for one, it’s so petty to expect me to pay for two. Tesco can afford it

Frappuccinofan · 14/10/2020 22:07

I think that was petty! He could have just charged you for the 2nd bag, but instead he made you empty your shopping out which is weird - it makes it seem like they’re suggesting you didn’t scan your groceries or thought you were dodgy outside of grabbing an extra bag.

I used to work in retail and honestly? We were non plussed about charging customers for a bag every single time. Eg if someone needed one after the initial transaction was complete, we would just give them one instead of asking them for the 5p. I worked in fashion retail though, perhaps supermarkets are more strict - especially Sainsbury’s with their 20p offerings!

That's so ridiculously not the same and you know it.

NotOfThisWorld · 14/10/2020 22:08

Exactly this.

BoomBoomsCousin · 14/10/2020 22:11

It seems a bit petty. Supermarkets don’t even want to charge for carrier bags, they’d rather give them away and have shoppers not feel like they need to be worried whether they have enough bags. The charge is a legal requirement, which they wouldn't have been prosecuted for failing to make if someone walked off with a bag.

I think OP’s attitude is poor, since it amounted to “I can’t be bothered and anyway they owe me since I bought so much shopping” but at the same time, security guard seems overzealous shouting at the OP rather than approaching and asking her to pay for the extra bag.
