To think this was petty

I was just at my local coop, I used the self service check out and selected one bag as I thought all my items would fit in one, as I put them in it wasn’t going to fit, I had already paid so just grabbed an extra bag as there was no option to pay for the extra bag as I would have to remove all my shopping and had nowhere to put it, yes I know I should have paid but I had just spent £30 in the shop so for the sake of an extra bag I didn’t see the big deal, anyway as I went to walk out the security shouted at me in front of everyone that I had taken two bags and paid for one! I was made to go back and empty out all my shopping. AIBU for thinking this was really petty? Considering how much I had just spent in the shop it all seemed a bit over the top

Definitely petty...Yanbu!

flaviaritt · 14/10/2020 21:30

Petty theft, yes.

emilyfrost · 14/10/2020 21:30

I didnt do it deliberate

Yes, you did. You knew you hadn’t paid for the bag but took it anyway.

marveloustimeruiningeverything · 14/10/2020 21:30

You picked stealing something over inconveniencing yourself.

It really is that simple.

Givemeabreak88 · 14/10/2020 21:30

I’ve said many time’s I pay before I pack!!! Sorry didn’t realise that was so crazy but I’m getting bored of being accused of making this up so I won’t bother commenting anymore

@Booboobibles

Bags in the Co-op are 5p.....yes the security guard was being ridiculously petty. What sort of person would completely humiliate someone over a 5p bag? A not very nice mini Hitler is the answer.

Unbelievable comments!

Yup.
ginswinger · 14/10/2020 21:33

In the grand scheme of things, it's not a terrible crime but what I think previous posters are saying is that you don't seem to feel you did anything wrong. You are being a little entitled suggesting that because you spent over an amount you deemed to be high, you were entitled to steal something. I think we all know that to be wrong.

Eckhart · 14/10/2020 21:34

It doesn't make sense, OP. If you'd finished your transaction, then the till would be back at the 'Welcome to the CoOp' screen, so you would just scan it in as a second transaction.

I call BS. You knew you were nicking it and you're pissed off you got caught.

Are you genuinely saying that things that are cheap don't need to be paid for by people who spend a lot of money in the shop? I don't think I should have to pay for mints any more, in that case.

Ilikewinter · 14/10/2020 21:34

Its great fun watching people trying to sneak free bags - even better when they get called out for it then get all huffy because they tried tried to scam the store and got caught out 😂.
Sorry OP but you did deliberately try to scam a free bag, you should have just paid for your shopping then scanned and paid for a new bag.

Laaalaaaa · 14/10/2020 21:34

Imagine every single person did this. Is it only 10p then? I have never used a self service yet that doesn’t ask you at the end to confirm how many bags you’ve used - no excuse.

jomaIone · 14/10/2020 21:35

YABU for thinking it's ok to scan, pay THEN packing. That is the crux of this issue!

Eckhart · 14/10/2020 21:35

Its great fun watching people trying to sneak free bags

But it's more fun when they're so indignant that they make a thread about it.

Mummy2niah · 14/10/2020 21:35

Very petty! Over a 5p bag seems so outrageous to me, how is it even effecting him??

BananaLlamaConCalma · 14/10/2020 21:35

I couldn't give a fuck about you stealing a bag but why on earth are you moving everything into the bag area and then bagging it? You must take twice as long as required? If I was behind you I'd put the bag over your head in frustration! Steal as many bags as you want but for the love of god, stretch out the bag and put your items in as you scan! 😀

Eckhart · 14/10/2020 21:37

Is 'scan then pack' ok if you've brought your own bags? The 'weigh your bag' thing never seems to work for me, so I usually scan then pack after paying, but this thread is making me paranoid.

MiddleClassProblem · 14/10/2020 21:38

Well, at least you’re unlikely to make that mistake again. Also I think you’ll find life a lot easier if you pack whilst scanning!

How is shoplifting affecting a shop security guard, you mean?

PumpkinetChocolat · 14/10/2020 21:39

YABU for not bagging your items as you go. People like you should be sent to do some till management training in Aldi.

Gemma2019 · 14/10/2020 21:39

I can't get outraged about someone taking an extra carrier bag - it wasn't that long ago they all used to be free anyway! I am shocked that you were being watched so closely that they noticed you took an extra bag. Maybe you caught their attention with your odd packing methods?

Off topic but I always buy a few of those Co-op carrier bags when I go there, as they are great caddy bags and cheaper than buying a roll of them from Tesco.

PurpleDaisies · 14/10/2020 21:39

Er, it’s his job?
Bluntness100 · 14/10/2020 21:40

I don’t know why everyone is being harsh op. Ignore them,

I’m with you. I always think what’s a reasonable level for me to nick based on how much I’ve spent.

😃

Caroncanta · 14/10/2020 21:40

Gosh you plastic bag thief. Terrible. Tut tut. You should go to prison.

Yes it's pretty.

Caroncanta · 14/10/2020 21:41

*petty. Lol

TheHobbitMum · 14/10/2020 21:41

You were in the wrong and you know it, it may be just a bag to you but it's still store inventory! Theft is theft, doesn't matter if its a 5p bag or a £50 bottle of whiskey

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 14/10/2020 21:42

It's the law that they have to charge you for bags. If they see you take one and don't charge, they are breaking the law. Because of you. Hardly petty. Refusing to scan and pay for a bag because you've paid £30 already is petty
