To think this was petty

I was just at my local coop, I used the self service check out and selected one bag as I thought all my items would fit in one, as I put them in it wasn’t going to fit, I had already paid so just grabbed an extra bag as there was no option to pay for the extra bag as I would have to remove all my shopping and had nowhere to put it, yes I know I should have paid but I had just spent £30 in the shop so for the sake of an extra bag I didn’t see the big deal, anyway as I went to walk out the security shouted at me in front of everyone that I had taken two bags and paid for one! I was made to go back and empty out all my shopping. AIBU for thinking this was really petty? Considering how much I had just spent in the shop it all seemed a bit over the top

I have never known a self check out that only asks you at the beginning about bags. Our Co-op asks you at the beginning “using own bag?” And then how many bags at the end...

You can scan or choose the right number.

mineofuselessinformation · 14/10/2020 21:14

AND, I've never taken a bag I didn't pay for - unless it was free.

cheesemongery · 14/10/2020 21:15

They'll always wait until you have left the store, that is what makes it theft. You have left the store with goods not paid for, in this case a bag. £30 of shopping in one bag? You stole a bag and got caught.

MiddleClassProblem · 14/10/2020 21:15

@Givemeabreak88

Yes but like I said all the items needed to be removed from the checkout for me to scan the other and I had nowhere to put them. But fine I get it, as if no one here has ever took a bag they didn’t pay for Hmm
You scan it when you pick it up to use...
Givemeabreak88 · 14/10/2020 21:16

Yes it asked at the end and I put one and paid, then started packing sorry if that’s not clear?

How did the security guard know how many bags you paid for?
It all sounds very unlikely...

Pollynextdoor · 14/10/2020 21:17

I think YANBU a bit petty.

PurpleDaisies · 14/10/2020 21:18

Yes but like I said all the items needed to be removed from the checkout for me to scan the other and I had nowhere to put them.

I don’t get it. You could have just scanned an empty bag to pay for the one you’d packed into. Or asked a member of staff to help at any point.

But fine I get it, as if no one here has ever took a bag they didn’t pay for

I have never taken a bag I haven’t paid for.

Clockwork99 · 14/10/2020 21:19

YABU. What is so difficult to understand. You didn't pay for it and took it.

swapsicles · 14/10/2020 21:19

Put the filled bag on floor or hold it then scan and pay for 2nd bag? If you've already used one then scan another, not difficult

LavaCake · 14/10/2020 21:19

I agree it was petty. For the sake of 10p the people yelling ‘thief’ are being hilariously daft.

jomaIone · 14/10/2020 21:20

This wil teach you to pack as you scan so you don't end up being accused of theft!

You could have easily scanned the 2nd bag and used contactless to pay for it in a separate transaction surely.

Givemeabreak88 · 14/10/2020 21:21

LavaCake thank you, I get it was wrong I’ve acknowledged that but it was a mistake! I didnt do it deliberate despite what has been said. I am tired and it’s been a long day I usually have a pram so underestimated how many bags I would have but clearly I deserve to be humiliated over the sake of 10p

So you are one of those annoying shoppers who scans everything and just blinks it on the nagging area, pays and then starts packing so we all have ti wait when its busy!

Why dont you pack as you scan? You've scanned a bag, you open it and put it in the nagging area and as you scan your shopping, you put it directly into the bag. Then you know if you need another bag and you just scan and repeat.

SarahAndQuack · 14/10/2020 21:23

It's daft when you think it's only 10p, but remember when the rule came in about making bags something you had to pay for? I wonder if the shop got fussy because they think they ought to be seen to be abiding by that.

PurpleDaisies · 14/10/2020 21:23

I didn’t do it deliberately despite what has been said.

You accidentally forgot to pay for the bag?

CSIblonde · 14/10/2020 21:23

I dont understand why you didn't ask for assistance. Theres always someone there at the self service bit for precisely this sort of thing. Or have a spare bag for life always in your shoulder bag.

FromageRay · 14/10/2020 21:23

I know this isn't the point of the thread but why do people scan all their shopping and then pack? Monsters!
Scan an item, chuck it in the bag. Scan your next item, chuck it in a bag. People who scan all their shopping and then pack it afterwards should be banned from self-scan tills!

Plmoknijb123 · 14/10/2020 21:26

It’s not petty, it’s a tactic that works. Embarrass you once, and from now on you will pay for your bags!

Booboobibles · 14/10/2020 21:26

Bags in the Co-op are 5p.....yes the security guard was being ridiculously petty. What sort of person would completely humiliate someone over a 5p bag? A not very nice mini Hitler is the answer.

Unbelievable comments!

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 14/10/2020 21:27

So you think you’re entitled to a free bag as you spent £30 in there? If you think about it in a different way does that mean you’re entitled to a chocolate bar or a carrot? You could pick one up on the way out.

Booboobibles · 14/10/2020 21:28

@FromageRay

I know this isn't the point of the thread but why do people scan all their shopping and then pack? Monsters! Scan an item, chuck it in the bag. Scan your next item, chuck it in a bag. People who scan all their shopping and then pack it afterwards should be banned from self-scan tills!
Because it’s always confused the till when I’ve tried.
Plmoknijb123 · 14/10/2020 21:28

Also the fact you were tired or that it’s cheap isn’t an excuse! Would you complain if you were charged 10p extra every few shops? And then when you complained the shop responded with...don’t be petty?! Grow up and pay for what you take!

ellenpartridge · 14/10/2020 21:29

Based on how the Co-Op self checkouts work this just doesn't ring true. At the very end it gives you a chance to confirm how many bags you have used so why didn't you just click 2 at that point?

TheyreComingToGetYouBarbara · 14/10/2020 21:29

One thing to stop you and ask you to pay for the second bag, but if he honestly shouted about it, he was being ridiculous.
