to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

This thread is ridiculous. I have Louis Vuitton bags for no reason other than I really like them. I buy them for me, not for other people’s validation.
To those in the know, fakes are very easily identifiable. So no, I would never automatically assume people are carrying fake bags, unless I actually knew what I was talking about.

So this thread shouldn't bother you and people who assume you are carrying a fake are of no consequence either because it's just about you and your bag, you don't care what people think?
GenevaL · 17/10/2020 19:46

I agree. I wouldn’t buy a monogrammed bag or one with a huge ostentatious logo, which rules out a lot of LV, Gucci, Versace etc. I have three very quiet looking Mulberry bags with minimal hardware.

Juancornetto · 17/10/2020 19:50

They're a design classic though aren't they? If they didn't have the negative conotations, people would appreciate LV handbags for the beautiful, practical objects that they are. They got so popular for a reason.

I'm not a fan of logos and status symbols but objectively, many status symbols are popular because they are actually great. Things don't stay popular because they're crap and shoddy. (I do prefer the Damier pattern to the monogram - and am unlikely to ever be able to afford either Grin)

Fimofriend · 17/10/2020 20:07

Once upon a time LV couldn't understand why there were so many "counterfeit" LV bags around and how come they were so perfect copies that even LV couldn't tell the difference. Can you guess why? Because the factory in China didn't have those normal working hours that LV though it had. Oh no. That factory was in action more or less around the clock with sewmistresses trained by LV on LV machines and with LV suppliers. So next time someone tells you it is always easy to tell a bag is counterfeit, well ....

throwaway100000 · 17/10/2020 20:17

@Fimofriend if that’s even true, what’s your point? If the handbags were created outside of working hours in a genuine factory, the handbags are genuine. Essentially the stock would be stolen, rather than counterfeit. And presumably LV has stopped that from happening so these stolen bags are rare - so yes, counterfeit LV is still obvious to anyone who has experience with the brand.

BlueThistles · 17/10/2020 20:26

Fakes are easy to spot.. that's a given.

Sadly I believe this thread runs way deeper than a mere logo on a bag. The mood of the responses prove that there is more to this than simply is it fake or real. 🌺

BruisedPear · 17/10/2020 20:58

This is such a weird thread. LV colours are good neutrals and the canvas is the lightest most hard wearing material you can get a bag in it’s perfect for travelling. It’s waterproof, scratch proof, lasts a long time and holds its value.
So what if it has a logo, let people live. I think some posters don’t understand that at a certain level of income it just becomes a bag no need for a deeper psychological analysis Confused. I don’t even understand why anyone would look at someone else’s and assume their stuff is fake it’s very judgmental and negative and says more about you. You really should challenge your stereotypes and biases.

Chevronsoup · 17/10/2020 21:23

@Sexnotgender

And I’ve just added them up, I have 17 if it makes you feel better that I now know how many I own.
Were you on a thread the other day about a ghosting friend? Someone had ghosted you once. Perhaps this was why....
ToryAldi · 17/10/2020 21:34

You really should challenge your stereotypes and biases. Cause the wealthy elite are the new victims! 😂I feel so bad for you - you spend$$$ on bags and people looks at you and think Oh Yeah fake...what does it matter to you? You're all about the quality and longivity not about the image or the brand making your apparently not out to be something you're not. If we judge you as fake or maybe even faintly ridiculous for buying a LV bag - why would you care?

ToryAldi · 17/10/2020 21:40

Sorry I should proof read - let me have another go.

You're all about the quality and longevity not about the image or the brand making you some how real. You think you are authentic - you have no need to cry about the injustice on MN - you are ridiculous. You are not someone who needs sympathy or empathy because you buy LV.

I’m detecting some jealousy here, people.

Anyways, I have a monogrammed LV and it’s bloody gorgeous.

Live and let live. Don’t be so petty.

nope but keep on deluding yourself...not that it matters because impressing people is not your agenda...apparently!

Just say NO, kids.

Jealousy Level = 9,879 Grin

ToryAldi · 18/10/2020 00:10

Jealousy of what..,,bad taste?
But it shouldn’t matter anyway enjoy your purchase because no one buys LV bags to impress so why would anyone’s opinion matter?

Thankgoodness1 · 18/10/2020 02:39

Grin You are hilarious! Such a hard-on over the fact that someone enjoys using a luxury handbag!

londonscalling · 18/10/2020 03:04

I prefer more subtle designer items. Personally I feel these bags are really tacky and pretentious. Less is more!

FromEden · 18/10/2020 03:42

Well this is clearly a load of bullshit because LV bags aren't made in China. The ones I have are labelled as made in France, Spain or the US.

Rawraw6217 · 18/10/2020 03:47

I think LV is a good example to use, and of course some (dare I say, most?) people who buy these bags are doing it to make a statement. But I've found, more often than not, it's usually a statement that says "look how far I've come." And that's not necessarily a bad thing, I don't think.

I personally don't like the designs with LV splattered all over the bag, preferring a more understated look that I really enjoy. The only people who know my bag is what it is are those who really love LV and know all of their designs or - the most important judge - me. :)

BruisedPear · 18/10/2020 03:57

Honestly look at the deep analysis you just gave of someone’s personality from buying a bag.why would people need sympathy or empathy??? It’s just a bag just accept people have different tastes I personally don’t wear them but I like luxury bags and can appreciate them especially for being hard wearing compared to other bags. Why would you assume all LV bags are fake because the people carrying them are scruffy or don’t fit you perceived idea of wealth it’s weird and very judgemental. I don’t look at someone driving a nice car and assume it’s on finance and they’re trying hard or look at someone’s expensive wedding ring or watch and assume it’s fake. It’s a real sad way to live life to attribute a whole persona to a women based off her handbag.
SusannaSpider · 18/10/2020 04:04

Wow, there's some unpleasant comments on this thread. I'm not a hand bag person and if I had £1200 to blow, it wouldn't be on a bag, LV or otherwise. But if a bag makes someone happy, for whatever reason then fair enough. To say you judge someone for it is pretty grim, you've no idea about that person.
As for £1200 on a bag, I wouldn't. I'd spend £1200 on a holiday, which would be over in 2 weeks or someone could spend £1200 on a bag, which would give them years of pleasure and practical use, which is the most sensible use of the money? We all have different priorities.

TheNanny23 · 18/10/2020 05:11

I agree my Perception is they look tacky and even if they are real they scream ‘wannabe WAG’. I agree with a previous poster that maybe it depends where you are from and having worked at a premiership football club that is the impression I have!

Each to their own- I could afford that stuff but just don’t feel the desire and allure. I got someone off Etsy to make me a quirky satchel with vegan leather and thought that was the best thing since sliced bread. On the engagement ring theme, I find so many new diamond rings impractical and gauche and prefer more delicate vintage style rings- it’s just different tastes isn’t it!

Fair enough if you want to buy this bag but I’d probably make assumptions about you- then again you might think I look like an eccentric primary school teacher who just got a windfall based on my style!
