to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

I see that the 'jealousy' argument is out in force.

Nobody could possibly dislike something without being jealous, especially not a monogrammed bag designed to ensure that the whole world realises the owner has a designer bag. There's absolutely no difference in taste and style here because everyone obviously green with envy. GrinHmm

BusyEvenForBee · 18/10/2020 08:49

Each taste to their own. LV do make some beautiful bags. I am not into monogrammed style myself as they do look tacky and too many fakes are made.

What I am surprised about is how many posters believe that bag collection is an investment. It is, but only for the right bags aka Chanel and Birkin.

Do take a look at second hand market and you will be surprised for how much less the bags are selling for. I had a Gucci bag, a gift, worth 4K as there were only 4 in the UK of that particular colour. Sold it for 650. My friend was struggling to sell Dior, originally worth 1200, at some point was offered 150...both bags were absolutely beautiful, well made, pristine.

So if somebody buying a bag as investment do check for much they actually sell on second hand market. It is only a few which hold the value. Keep the box, receipt, dust bag.

queenofarles · 18/10/2020 09:38

The reason why there are good fakes is that who ever copies the bags actually buys the real thing first then copies them up close.

Rosemaryshairy · 18/10/2020 09:40

@Dongdingdong

Apparently on MN, low end designer like Mulberry is covetable but high end like Chanel, Bottega, Loewe are 'try hard'. Hilarious.

This!

Oh I love a Chanel bag!

I have a Louis Vuitton that has quadrupled in price, they sell second hand for more than double the price I paid.

The longer this thread is going on, and the more batshit stuff that's being said, the more it's actually making me want to get a LV bagGrin

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 18/10/2020 10:05

Do it @CarolineBingley, you'll never look back! 😂

Maybe someone in LV marketing started this thread?!

formerbabe · 18/10/2020 10:06

I've never understood the love for Mulberry bags...they seem really dull to me.

Think I might dig my lv bag out today...I mean I'll be wearing primark clothes and I'm sure everyone will hate me but who cares?!

formerbabe · 18/10/2020 10:07

I could afford that stuff but just don’t feel the desire and allure. I got someone off Etsy to make me a quirky satchel with vegan leather

The most humble brag ever. Congratulations on being a superior person in every way.

Oodlesofnoodles20 · 18/10/2020 10:24

OP, you have triggered all the LV bag ladies!

queenofarles · 18/10/2020 10:38

Actually "investing in bags" is one of the biggest lies I’ve ever read. the second hand market is so saturated ATM. You might get lucky selling one bag but certainly not 5 or 10.

I started buying Birkins and other Hermes bags in my early 20s. I sold most of the Birkins I owned for less than the original Price I paid 15 years ago! I know some who struggle to sell Birkins in Colours like blue jean and vert Anise, these colours were so so popular in the 2000s But no one dares to be seen in them now, I think celebs like Victoria Beckham and the Kardashian clan ruined the bag beyond repair.

I fined this thread weird. The OP is allowed to say her opinion some agree others don’t . I don’t understand all this jealousy talk?

BlueThistles · 18/10/2020 10:39

the comparison with WAG's is deeply embarrassing .... I live on the rural west coast of Scotland... trust me.. nobody's running around here like a TOWIE extra... wax jacket wellies and woollies galore though... oh and a sprinkling of lovely large bags .. 🌺

Fimofriend · 18/10/2020 11:35

@throwaway100000 My point is that if it has happened once it can happen again. Lego was certainly made to regret that they outsourced a factory to China for a couple of years. Also the definition of "Counterfeit" is not really appropriate in all cases.

Manteo · 18/10/2020 12:00

Any bag with a visible designer label is very tacky/footballers wives/ TOWIE etc. Usually owned by people who also covet flashy cars, hunter wellies, pandora bracelets etc. There's a type.

LolaSmiles · 18/10/2020 12:01

I really wanted a Mulberry Bayswater a few years ago and didn't get one. I'm not a big handbag lover, but part of me wishes I could bring myself to part with that sort of cash for a bag.

waterthedog · 18/10/2020 12:42

I am generally quite modest with spending however there are a few things I splurge on because they make me happy and I get pleasure from them, for this reason I think they are worth the expense. I have a few designer handbags including a less common LV. I also bought a very nice car. What can I say, they make me smile when I use them. I don't really think about what others think, as I buy them for me!

sickohsickofthisshit · 18/10/2020 12:50

I wouldn't as frankly two
Many people have copies and you can't see the difference. However my friend has a YSL one and it it absolutely lush.!

The jealousy talk is classic Mumsnet. The items we are meant to feel jealousy over range from handbags to Meghan Markle and everything in between. The poster is meant to feel crushed!

You are not meant to be honest about the insanity of bestowing such monetary value on a mere bag.
I could but I wouldn’t is what comes to my mind.

Janegrey333 · 18/10/2020 12:52

Meghan is not an “item” but you get my drift!!

Is Pandora stuff expensive? I wouldn’t have put it into the same category as the other things on your list. I agree that a certain type of person gravitates towards the brand, though.
Lily193 · 18/10/2020 13:06

LV is considered an accessible luxury brand which is why it's so ubiquitous. Similarly, Mulberry is happy to retail at a low price point and sell on the high street to make the brand accessible to a much wider range of people.

SusannaSpider · 18/10/2020 13:52

GrinI like Pandora rings. Probably the only time in my life I've been called flashy. And not sure how you'd know they were Pandora. I also have a Trollbeads leather bracelet, there is no hope for me obviously!

EatPrayYoga · 18/10/2020 14:13

I don't think they're the most beautiful bags but that doesn't mean other people wouldn't

I'd love a Chanel bag and that is quite recognisable too

EatPrayYoga · 18/10/2020 14:16

Pandora is not flashy IMHO. Whilst owning some designer bags can be aspirational was they cost a lot, Pandora is not in that category. If anything it probably signals someone who likes brands or wants the "in" thing or the moment or a lack of original style .

The best bit of lazy stereotyping I've seen in literally minutes.
