to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

@Janegrey333

Collecting “designer handbags” is on the tacky side. It’s actually quite ludicrous.
Why?
ThePriceIsNotRight · 14/10/2020 11:21

I have six empreinte variations, with my everyday bag being the Montaigne. Some were gifts, others I’ve bought myself.

Personally I think they’re beautiful, so to each their own on that one. I can’t say I’m bothered if anyone thinks they’re fake, because I don’t have them to impress others.

Laaalaaaa · 14/10/2020 11:28

@PhlegmyHead

Let me guess, instead of buying the next bag we really should donate that 4 figure amount to charity?

Considering the scorn laid upon millionaires and billionaires on here - may I ask at what point it is unreasonable to spend money on designer handbags over charity?
There must be a cut off point?

No cut off point for me. I’m sorry but I’m not going to bother saving money to donate it to charity. Maybe harsh but that’s the truth. Bags are a treat for me. Some people save for holidays etc, should they give that to charity instead? Nah didn’t think so.
PhlegmyHead · 14/10/2020 14:22

No cut off point for me.

So you would have no issue if someone like Jeff Bezos donated absolutely nothing to charity and spent all his money on himself?

There MUST be a cut off???

good lord OP... this Thread... is a stick to beat people with right 🤔

The second I clicked on this thread, a marketing email from LV pinged up on my laptop screen Grin

I said for ME. Stop twisting things. You hate LV, I love it - we will never agree. Also I really don’t care what a billionaire does with his money - probably a hell of a lot more good than you. 💁🏻‍♀️
lovepickledlimes · 14/10/2020 17:06

@PhlegmyHead to be honest it's his money he can do what he likes with it provided he pays the taxes he is supposed to he can piss it down the drain for all I care

BAYouTFall · 15/10/2020 17:41

This thread has opened my eyes! I would never think someone with an LV bag that was monogram would be fake I’m sure there are people that carry them but I wouldn’t even think twice.

I like LV and would love to buy the Pochette Accessoires in mono, I’m now wondering if people would think I’m just carrying fake bags around!

justanotherneighinparadise · 15/10/2020 18:19

I guess it doesn’t matter what people think, unless people’s opinions are the reason behind spending the money? If you like something then buy it, don’t be influenced by others.

Should have bought it about 15 years ago - it only cost about £120 then 🤣🤣
LzzyHale · 15/10/2020 19:26

I wonder why anyone wears an engagement ring that cost more than £50? Surely anything above that is just a way of showing your wealth?

I am engaged but don’t wear a ring as I think it’s a massive waste of money. That probably explains why I don’t own acLV bag 🤭
BAYouTFall · 16/10/2020 00:50

@Laaalaaaa I was a young teen my parents would never have bought me an LV bag Shock

ToryAldi · 16/10/2020 03:24

I always assume designer bags are fake too - unless the wearer has a particularly well put together outfit, I think they cheapen you’re look.
My sister was disappointed by the size of the diamond in her engagement ring - she wears a fake, no one would guess - but it says a bit about who she is!
The LV vintage slightly battered luggage looks quite cool but checking in nice luggage when flying is like asking for trouble - and wrapping it won’t quite give the same cool look.

Beaverdam100 · 17/10/2020 13:43

I assume they bought them on the market while on holiday.

JanewaysBun · 17/10/2020 14:07

I don't pass judgement on other people's choices, who care what bag someone Wears?

Some I like some I don't do therefore don't buy for myself. Also vegan leather is not a thing, it's just plastic!

LolaSmiles · 17/10/2020 14:26

Some people like either showing wealth, or more accurately like the look that suggests they have money, whether it's very blingy engagement rings or designer bags with the logo everywhere. If there wasn't a market for items saying 'I want you to think I'm wealthy... look at the brands I'm wearing... look at my bling' then companies wouldn't create products for them.

Then there's people who may have an expensive ring or a designer bag that are more understated and aren't designed to be a giant 'look at my bling' beacon and most people wouldn't bat an eye lid.

To me, it's not about someone spending money on something nice, just there's something a bit meh, even tacky at times, about a look that is focused on flashing labels etc.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 17/10/2020 15:35

Why can't people just enjoy having nice things FFS?

BlueThistles · 17/10/2020 16:40

because other people won't let them 🙄

Harrysblondie · 17/10/2020 19:09

@sqirrelfriends

Honestly, every time I see one I just assume it's fake.
So do I, however my friend had hers custom made with her initials on. Looked even more fake!
RogueV · 17/10/2020 19:22

Absolutely OP!

They are ugly ugly ugly

Dongdingdong · 17/10/2020 19:28

Apparently on MN, low end designer like Mulberry is covetable but high end like Chanel, Bottega, Loewe are 'try hard'. Hilarious.

This!
