to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

I don’t know what your problem is.

If you don’t want expensive bags no one’s making you have any.

I don’t have any LV bags yet, as it happens. But when I do buy one (or maybe two) it certainly won’t look fake, nor look tacky. Because as I’ve already said on this thread, it’s all in how you wear them.

randomsabreuse · 08/10/2020 20:24

I've never got the "pay ££££ to advertise this brand" level of logo stuff - so Gucci, LV, Burberry.

If I had the money (I don't) I'd be buying more subtle things without the obvious branding, and my supercar would be a black McLaren of some description!

VinylDetective · 08/10/2020 20:25

it’s all in how you wear them

It really isn’t.

ElspethFlashman · 08/10/2020 20:29

I have a piece of luggage as I said before, and its been on every trip I've taken for years and years. Its a weekend bag, so even comes with me on weekend trips. Thrown in the back of the boot, stuffed in overhead compartments.

Its in superb nick. Say what you like about spending that money on coated canvas etc, but by God they're hardy.

Its actually one of the reasons those monogram bags are popular amongst us that own them. They weigh next to nothing, can fit quite a lot inside, and hold up to some fair amount of bashing.

Ninkanink · 08/10/2020 20:30

Oh yes it is!

Oh no it isn’t!

Oh no it isn’t!

🙄🙄🙄

Plenty of people manage to look elegant, classic and perfectly well put together with an LV bag.

LolaSmiles · 08/10/2020 20:32

I like some designer bags but the ones like LV with the monogram and logos everywhere scream tacky and look at me. Athough I'm sure they want people to notice their wealth, I get the impression they're not that wealthy as the people I know who are genuinely wealthy wouldn't be seen dead in some of the things the wannabe rich love.

Frappuccinofan · 08/10/2020 20:34

Many LV handbags are cheaper than £1200, particularly the ones the British public tend to wear (eg I’m sure the neverful is around £600). It’s entry level designer compared to other brands.

I do think the LV print goes with a lot of different colours and can take an outfit to the next level, so people do genuinely buy it because they like the appearance of it. But yes, it’s a status symbol.

woodengardenpot · 08/10/2020 20:34

I just always wanted one I don't know why. Maybe because my mum always had one.
Anyway I couldn't bring myself to buy one because price was so high. My dh bought me one with a separate purse and brought it home one day.
I have treasured it. I do enjoy wearing it. Don't wear to show I have money. I stuff it full of things all the time especially when I have young dc with me. Fluffy toys easily sit on top of whatever's in there on a given day Grin no glamour in my handbag that's for sure!!

woodengardenpot · 08/10/2020 20:35

My bag and purse were £1.6k Blush

Laaalaaaa · 08/10/2020 20:39

@Frequentcarpetflyer

But do they really last longer than cheaper bags? A lot of posters only use them "for best"...
Yes, the first ever one I bought 18 years ago is still going strong. Along with my others that are roughly 16 years old. These are well used, everyday bags - absolutely not kept for occasions.
lovepickledlimes · 08/10/2020 20:39

Not a fan of LV but would probably give my right arm for a Birkin..... One in Rose Sakura pink to be exact lol. I do realise the closest I will ever get to one is scrolling through pictures of it on my phone 😂🤣😂

TheClitterati · 08/10/2020 20:40

I'm surprised something that ugly costs so much. I have no LV aspirations.

Weallfloatdownhere · 08/10/2020 20:42

"Status symbol" my arse 😂😂😂 mind you, when I go on a weekend away I pack my stuff in a Superdry rucksack and random carrier bags so perhaps I just don't get the whole "designer" bag thing (well evidently, I clearly do not....) To me, a bag is a bag and who gives a shit how much it cost, where it was made or under what brand name. I just don't get it. Never have, never will....

greybeans · 08/10/2020 20:42

Disagree i think they are so classy looking

howrudeforme · 08/10/2020 20:42

Reminds me years ago had to go for a 40th surprise bd meal with my then husband’s friends. Nice restaurant but not much of a surprise for the birthday boy as a load turned up and parked their V expensive cars right outside the venue (when loads of parking at the rear),

Not my crew, and I was placed next to a group of women who one by one got out their italian designer handbags and all judging each other. Horrible evening. They were waiting for me to display mine 🤣🤣.

Put me off designer anything for life. Thought pandemic make do and mend would a stop to this.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 08/10/2020 20:43

I know people on minimum wage who have real Louis Vitton bags. It's not an indicator of being rich, it's just an indicator of your ability to buy fugly overpriced handbags

Toddlerteaplease · 08/10/2020 21:00

I would assume it's fake and therefore a bit tacky!

DaintyElephant · 08/10/2020 21:03

LV makes me think of Colleen Rooney, God love her.

It’s far from classy.

Ninkanink · 08/10/2020 21:12

Well now, I’m not arguing that LV in and of itself is classy...

Anyway. You either love handbags and think they’re worth spending on or you don’t; you either know how to make things look elegant and classic or you don’t.

There’s room for everyone in the world!

imfatletsparty · 08/10/2020 21:19

News just in! Different people like different things! More on this shocking story at 10!

Me too. Victoria Beckham apparently has about 30 in different colours. That’s a gorgeous bag.
Ninkanink · 08/10/2020 21:36

Top of my wish list atm is a Bottega Veneta. But it’s not likely to happen as I’m absolutely shit at saving!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 08/10/2020 21:38

Nink same here. and as I've spent a bit on it I still take care of it. So if I'm out I won't just stick it on a dirty floor if I can help it, I'll tick it under my arm in the rain. It's good to look after things as they'll last years. Grin

I'm surprised at the amount of judging going on towards posters who like nice things. I'm sure everyone of us has something they like to splurge on that others would consider excessive. Unless you're posting sat in your dress fashioned from an old sack whilst darning your socks by candlelight.

trimtops · 09/10/2020 00:21

well, according to some, I must be a walking cliche.

I have in my collection, LV Sac Plat, a Zippy wallet that's now plain brown as its 15 years old, - Hermes Blue Jean Birkin, - 2 Hermes Evelyne, 1 in Orange if anyone wants to buy it, the other is Gris (thats Grey to the uninitiated) and a super tatty Mulberry Anthony, all collected over a lot of years.

There again I also wear a Cartier Santos watch alongside my joggers from Primark. Am I a rich bitch? no, just went out to work a lot for the last 40 years. I'm now 65, please don't assume every designer bag you see is a replica. Thats just ignorant, some of us old boomers carry the real thing y'know.

1Morewineplease · 09/10/2020 00:24

Like others have said, if I see a LV /Chanel/CD/mulberry handbag in the playground, I know that it's a fake.
