to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

I don't particularly like the LV brown/tan coloured bags - I have a grey one though

Laaalaaaa · 08/10/2020 18:02

It’s not just the stitching. Half the bags you see are in styles the designer simply does not make, stupid big fat plaques in the middle of the bag that no genuine bag has, the positioning of the monogram, feet on the bottom of the bag. Those are just a few immediate things that are a give away.

ElspethFlashman · 08/10/2020 18:22

I have one (speedy) and I really like wearing it. For years I thought they were hideous and tacky, until I went out with a friend one night and I jokingly asked if I could pose for a photo with her LV handbag (with intention to laugh at it later). When I held the bag and saw the photo I just fell in love with the bag on the spot. Went and bought it a week later

That reminds me of when I bought my Speedy. Was absolutely determined to buy something with no monogram. Tried on a crossbody Speedy and I fell in love on the spot. It reminded me of old photos of Audrey Hepburn who always had one.

And its a bloody good bag. Handsfree and holds a ton.

Sadly not getting much of an outing in 2020.

Hope my daughter likes them as much as me, as she's inheriting them (I have 3 accumulated over the past 15 years, and may well get more before I hit the coffin). If not, she can sell them and make a few grand.

attillathenun · 08/10/2020 18:26

The fabric is also a giveaway to a fake, as is the colour of the “leather” parts and the colour of the bag itself. The fake LV never full you see a lot of is often very dull and looks quite rigid whereas the real one has a sheen to it and is soft because it’s a soft canvas

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 08/10/2020 18:27

Or to say please mug me.

I was given an LV bag as a leaving gift from work once, The ghastly chequered one. The owner of the company came up quietly and said "sorry, I know you hate it, here's the catalogue, choose what you'd like and I'll get it changed for you"

Nonamesavail · 08/10/2020 18:28

I hate anything like that, that distinguishes itself to a brand

Laaalaaaa · 08/10/2020 18:33

Talking about Speedys, it always makes me laugh if someone is papped carrying one and you get people rushing to call them out for carrying a fake bag as the canvas is upside down. They get so outraged not understanding that the bag is made from one continuous piece of material - hence one side upside down 🤣

youdidask · 08/10/2020 18:45

Tbh I think knockoff when I see them.

I just can't see the attraction of spending ££££ on something just because of the branding.

honeygirlz · 08/10/2020 18:45

Does the Speedy have a longer handle? I see women holding it by hooking the short handle through their arm, and it just looks awkward.

Laaalaaaa · 08/10/2020 18:47

You can get either the short carry handles or pay a good bit extra for the long strap. Personal preference is short handles.
ElspethFlashman · 08/10/2020 19:04

There's a long strap version called the Speedy Bandoliere. I think its a fairly modern version.

Google it - its become very popular as you can wear it either way. The long strap can clip off.

Comes in different sizes. I have the 30 but I'm tall. Petite women tend to get the 25.

MorganKitten · 08/10/2020 19:09

I have lots of designer bags, they’ve lasted forever and an ex liked to buy them for me... each to their own

toconclude · 08/10/2020 19:14

@MaudHatter

I agree with you . “ I’ve made it and can afford to spend 1200 on a bag “
I can afford to spend £1200 on a bag. I just have more sense.
Gobbycop · 08/10/2020 19:19

I've no idea why if you've got that kind of money would you not find a leather worker to custom make you something.

Pay that kind of money for something generic, or less than half for something unique and one of a kind.

YorkshireLass2012 · 08/10/2020 19:25

After umming and ahing for a good three years I treated myself to a Neverfull in white and I love it. Completely impractical with small children really. But it makes me smile. It was a luxury purchase to mark the birth of my first child after being given less than 1% chance of being able to conceive. Each to their own. This world would be pretty boring if we all liked and dressed in the same clothes and accessories Grin

Thischarmlessgirl · 08/10/2020 19:28

I used some inheritance from my beloved Gran to buy myself a Chanel double flap bag as I’ve loved them since I was 18. It brings me great pleasure (and has increased in value), each to their own

Now that I am jealous of! What a lovely thing to do with your gran’s money.
JoJoSM2 · 08/10/2020 19:45

At the end of the day, people can of course spend their own money as they please - I just find it genuinely interesting, as its something I wouldn't consider worth the money.

Well, that’s the point that people value different things. I haven’t found any bags that would be a patch on the LV bucket bag at any price points so I’ve got a couple of those to match different outfits.

I’m not into cars much and a rubbish driver so wouldn’t spend silly money on a car. I can’t taste the difference in more expensive wines past the £10-20 bracket so I don’t buy fancy wine. I’m sure I could find something that you overspend on in my view.

I love nice bags but I agree with OP about LV! They just look ick to me, and they were the sort of thing teenagers asked for when I was young (same with Longchamp) so I always find them ridiculously tacky. Mind you I hate Mulberry bags for the opposite reason, as they come across quite old to me and the leather texture just bothers me.

I lkve Aspinal bags and really plain Dior ones, they’re subtle but high quality and simple, not too in your face. I also have a few fun ones from Kate Spade (like little going out ones).

Some classy people I know do bottega Veneta, Loewe, Sophie Hulme, Ralph Lauren and similar—none are cheap but a lot more tasteful! Have a lot more design and quality in them, and designed to be classy not showy.

I have a particular hatred for really ugly tacky bag collections—you know when people own piles of Chanel Boys, LV monogrammed bags, etc?—it just looks ick. And no way would I believe the person buying them actually likes them for the innate design/quality/luxury!

Frequentcarpetflyer · 08/10/2020 20:00

But do they really last longer than cheaper bags? A lot of posters only use them "for best"...

MrsKingfisher · 08/10/2020 20:02

I have a few LV leather ones not obviously monogrammed, I love them had them years and still they look good. I didn't buy them for the 'look at me' I bought them as I loved them and they work for what I need. I wouldn't buy another as the craftsmanship is not what it used to be and the materials not as good. I feel the same way about the Chanel flap as you do about LV.

Ninkanink · 08/10/2020 20:05

I use mine all the time (except for evening/occasion bags) and don’t believe in babying my bags or being overly concerned with shielding them. I have a modest collection and every single one still looks as new as the day I bought it. My one workhorse bag is starting to show some slight wear on corners, as reasonably expected, but that doesn’t in any way detract from the beauty of the bag.

Ninkanink · 08/10/2020 20:06

Sigh. I’m in the mood for virtual window shopping now!

Justgorgeous · 08/10/2020 20:12

I have a LV record bag, it’s 22 years old now and was a gift from my now ex husband. I’m certainly not wealthy and only use occasionally, I really like it.

Babying and shielding a bag? Or are you talking about a newborn baby?

LV, look fake even when they're not and the colour looks like 💩 on a good day!

Yes, I can easily afford one of I wanted, but they're awful so I don't

All of this designer bags bollocks, reminds of that childhood favourite the emperor's new clothes.
