to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

I’ve never understood why LV is so popular

An ex bought me a LV bag I had to be honest with him he thought I didn’t like it because I thought it was fake he really couldn’t understand I didn’t like the brown and gold granny pattern bag

stopgap · 09/10/2020 00:36

I have plenty of bags, but no LV. They’re fine but overexposed. My favorites are probably my three Judith Lieber clutches—true works of art.

gurteee · 09/10/2020 00:51

Conspicuous consumption has never been my bag 👜👛🎒💼

I wouldn't assume someone was rich just from a single possession either:

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspicuous_consumption

"More recent economic research indicated that conspicuous consumption is in fact less common among the affluent and more common among lower-income groups, regardless of racial or ethnic background, and also common to the societies of countries with emerging economies: "It signals that the owner came from a poor group and has something to prove."[

I own two LV neverfull tote bags. I‘ve used them both day in day out for years! Love them and any other bags would be in a complete state by now giving the use I’ve had out of them. Both still look new (on the outside anyway). One was brought when they were a lot “cheaper” in 2015 for around £500-£600 and now being sold for £1100 the other I brought more recently but was still cheaper than currently being sold. LV prices have gone up ridiculously! If I was to sell them 2nd hand I would actually get more money now than what I paid for them.

I didn’t buy them to impress others I brought because I liked the style and wanted a good quality bag I knew I would get use out of. I previously brought a £300 MK bag that fell to pieces within a year so although LV is expensive the quality really is insane.

ConiferGate · 09/10/2020 04:04

The quality of real designer bags is incredible, I have a few and they will never age. All discrete branding eg the clasp design, no print. All £1k+, a couple over 10 years old and still look amazing. I agree LV has become tacky but mostly because of the fakes, I assume that anyone with one who isn’t wearing other similar items eg shoes, jewellery, coat has a fake.

People buy fakes because they love the real thing but can’t afford it, ir in the case of LV want to be seen as able to afford it. So your not entirely wrong, but some of the comments on here are a bit harsh. At the end of the day it’s a successful brand for a reason.

ConiferGate · 09/10/2020 04:05

You’re ffs.

seayork2020 · 09/10/2020 05:41

The same could said about anything that costs money, and it can also work the other way - does buying something with 'Primark' on (not picking on Primark just going on a cliché I hear about) show you are 'cheap' and 'lack class'

What is acceptable to have that is because you like it rather than it having to show something about you?

whatsyournamenow · 09/10/2020 06:11

it’s all in how you wear them

I bought a lb copy when I first started teaching. It was from a company that advertised as making high quality replicas and it cost over a £100 which was quite a lot for me then. I also bought a Burberry messenger bag from eBay which was tweed and gorgeous. I gave it to a colleague and hope it is still being used somewhere. I did wish I had kept that one. I also bought a copy white lv which was a waste as the originals only lasted a short time.

I wouldn't buy one now as I couldn't justify the price. I have also bought myself a bag made out of recycled fire hoses which was not cheap and I love it. I think you should buy what you can afford and like surely that is all that matters?

user68901 · 09/10/2020 07:13

completely agree. I also dislike the classic little quilted chanel bags with chain shoulder strap

HexagonsHecateAndHecuba · 09/10/2020 07:15

@Mumblechum0

Totally agree. I don't see the attraction of LV, or now we come to it, Burberry and wouldn't have a Range Rover if you gave me one.
Totally agree about LV and Burberry...... but I love my Range Rover 😂

I'm amazed at how many people (11 pages worth!) spend time noticing and commenting what other people wear. Thought we all had to #bekind? Grin

Never gonna happen when half the population is jealous of what the other half buy. Its just a bag, who gives a shit what brand it is? Considering how many decades lv has been around, I don't think they need nor care for your opinions. Grin

Besom · 09/10/2020 07:36

I know it"s inverted snobbery, or just snobbery, but I have an aversion to ostentatious display of wealth or things that are too 'flashy'. I would put LV bags into this category. I'm also aware it is a silly attitude to have because everyone displays their wealth/social class in one way or another.

Thehop · 09/10/2020 07:39

I bought myself a Louis Vuitton bag before I had my kids. It’s plain black though.

JalapenoDave · 09/10/2020 07:47

I feel the same way OP about the bags with the MASSIVE Chanel logo. Just tacky as fuck in my opinion!
But to each their own, I'm sure a lot of people would disapprove of my fashion choices.

Emeraldshamrock · 09/10/2020 07:53

LV definitely lost their name among the rich.
Every Christmas you can tell who's mam is going to starve after paying for a small LV tote or who's Dad is a local drug dealer depending on the size and amount of bags.
It is all Instagram content.
My niece in college earning part time saves hard to buy Gucci sliders or another LV bag or to add more filler in their lips.
All her friends were LV from bags to bows to belts.
Thankfully she doesn't smoke or drink.

This is true, you will see a lot of schoffel in my ds school at pick up time which is just another way of displaying wealth and a nod to a different club.
BinkyBoinky · 09/10/2020 10:05

I've always thought they're incredibly ugly. If they weren't priced so high no one would buy them! I bet most people who buy them don't think about the "craft", most just do because celebs wear them.

Shxx · 09/10/2020 11:50

Yes and I have some expect I'm not rich I got it for show.

Being honest

LonelyFromCorona · 09/10/2020 11:57

Lots of jealous individuals who dream of affording such bags in this thread.

Shxx · 09/10/2020 12:01

I brought a plain prada bag for 1900 about 3 years ago still regret it. I hardly wear it and if you put it on any hard surface the gold studs at the bottom come off and go silver.

VinylDetective · 09/10/2020 12:16

Lots of people who could afford them and wouldn’t be seen dead with them too.
happilybemused · 09/10/2020 12:17

There are so many ways you can tell if a person is wealthy.

Clothes, hair, shoes, jewellery, watch - the list goes on.

Just a bag wouldn't convince me of anything.

Personally I like the monogrammed LV bags and have a few. Each to their own I say.

CounsellorTroi · 09/10/2020 12:26

I’m intrigued at how many people talk about “wearing” bags. For me they are something I use rather than wear.
