To ask if giving a false phone number is a thing?

Went to a cafe with a friend, we sat outside but she was asked for her phone number. Once we sat down, she admitted that she always gives a false number and so does everyone she knows.

Is this really a common thing? I haven't been in places very much but have always given my number when asked.

I expect it is!

PinkiOcelot · 01/10/2020 18:33

I’ve heard this too. I really don’t see the point Just give your bloody number FGS.

ChaChaCha2012 · 01/10/2020 18:33

I've always given a false number. I wouldn't answer an unknown call anyway so makes no difference.

SpringFan · 01/10/2020 18:33

Possibly, I think that's why most pubs and cafe now ask you to use the NHS app when you go in.

Good to see the great British public pulling together!

If you don't want to give the details or answer a private number within 14 days, then don't fucking go anywhere that requires your details.

Why do the rules not apply to you?

Agreed.

I know it happens a lot. My landline is very fake seeming (think 1234) and I get challenged on it. Ironically there's also a string of numbers in my mobile that sounds unlikely too Confused

BashfulClam · 01/10/2020 18:58

Give your number ffs. If trace and track calm they will leave a message if you don’t reply. My husband spent weeks working in test and trace and the utter scumbags that provided false numbers just wasted his time!

Potterpotterpotter · 01/10/2020 18:59

I give a false number. It’s non of their business

I think the app is a utter waste of time to actually start with so I think he wasted his time no matter what.
bigbluebus · 01/10/2020 19:00

It might be a thing with some selfish people but I always give my correct number as do my close friends.

Why it is only used if required for track and trace? We need thebtrack and trace to work but people like you who think they are so interesting that their number will be used for y purposes are causing it to fail. You are not the interesting, get over yourself!
Potterpotterpotter · 01/10/2020 19:03

@BashfulClam - well that’s me told isn’t it 😂

Mintjulia · 01/10/2020 19:03

What a stupid and irresponsible thing to do.

BashfulClam · 01/10/2020 19:04

@Potterpotterpotter it is s vital mower it curbing the virus. If someone in the restaurant gets it (nothing to do with an app by the way) and tracers get your details and they are wrong the cannot contact you or anyone else you may have come into contact with.

teenagetantrums · 01/10/2020 19:04

I cant afford two weeks off work if someone in same cafe as me gets a positive test. So yes l always give a false number. However l also get tested at work weekly. It's a risk assesment l choose to do

It's everybody's business now that collecting track and trace information is mandatory.
2CatsAndCounting · 01/10/2020 19:06

I feel it is common. In my view anyone providing a false number is selfish scumbag.

And saying your number is none of their business - Well actually it is. It is very simple if you don’t wish to abide by the rules, don’t visit those places.

Potterpotterpotter · 01/10/2020 19:07

@BashfulClam - that’s the point... I’m fine with them not contacting me, I don’t care if someone the other side of the cafe tests + a few days later. I have to work

lifesalongsong · 01/10/2020 19:07

I hope the idiots giving the wrong number are happy if they give covid to their vunerable friends. And family because no one was able to contact them to let them they might have it.

The selfishness of some people is crazy. I wouldn't go out with your friend if it was me, she could be infectious without knowing.

ilovesooty · 01/10/2020 19:08

If you can't bring yourself to be socially responsible stay out of cafes, restaurants and pubs.

I don’t have any vulnerable friends or family members.
Whatwouldscullydo · 01/10/2020 19:09

I'm pretty sure most the numbers I've been given are fake.

I dont answer numbers I don't know either

I haven't given my number out yet. I cant afford to take time off work cos I may or may not have shared a coffee shop with someone who tested positive.

Oh and there's this

BojoKilledMyMojo · 01/10/2020 19:10

I provide my real details. Those I know who don't are a bit thick generally.

If I felt strongly about not wanting to isolate or whatever, I'd just avoid places where it may become an issue.

No thank you. I’m just as entitled to be in there as anyone else. I won’t give my number because I don’t want to but I will go to Any cafe/bar or pub if I want to.
