To ask if giving a false phone number is a thing?

DuckyMcDuck · 01/10/2020 18:31

Went to a cafe with a friend, we sat outside but she was asked for her phone number. Once we sat down, she admitted that she always gives a false number and so does everyone she knows.

Is this really a common thing? I haven't been in places very much but have always given my number when asked.

The member of the SNP who took a 400 mile train ride back to Scotland knowing she has covid is not a great example to the nation. Presumably she will be obliged to pay all the lost pay for everyone on the train now told to stay at home without pay for 2 weeks!

Pomegranatemolasses · 01/10/2020 19:55

@Potterpotterpotter, are you an 'anti-masker' also? You seem to take a pretty repellant gleeful delight in your vile and selfish opinions and actions.

GeologyRox · 01/10/2020 19:56

Depends if you trust them not to use the data in other ways - eg sell it on to a marketing company.

What I don't get is how it's completely unacceptable to people really worried about this or having to isolate to take some responsibility and not go to places where this may be a risk, yet find it acceptable to screw up tracing and shutting down an outbreak quickly and the repercussions that has for far more people.
Going to a cafe or pub is not mandatory, no one has a gun to your head, yet people are putting their 'rights' to go and have a beer or a coffee above anything else, it's utterly ridiculous that this is where we're at.

Whatwouldscullydo · 01/10/2020 19:56

So no, I’m afraid I don’t think people giving false info are stupid. It’s a difficult one, but in most areas the statistical risks of getting or spreading CV are still low

We recognise that you cant put pictures you took if your kids on face book if its taken at school and there are other kids in the back ground.

But then no one accepts that adults might also need protecting.

Eveb the police were told not to download the app on work phones .

But seems covid means that nothing else will happen to anyone to do with anything else .

BertieBotts · 01/10/2020 19:56

I just learned today that you can actually be fined for this in Germany where I live. Not a huge amount, but seems fair.

Data protection laws are quite stringent here though, so it tends to be individual slips of paper which are then taken away by a person (presumably to be filed somewhere) - I only came across one which was using a list right at the start of these measures. And one which just had a box on the counter to put them in, which was overflowing and clearly hadn't been emptied EVER Confused I got the strong sense they weren't expecting to get any calls, if they ever did I would not like to be the person going through the box!

Presumably only in her carriage?

*Unfortunately some cafes I’ve been to just have a paper sheet to fill out and you can see everyone else’s details and they can see yours.

From a keeping your personal data safe perspective it fails badly.

From keeping people from dying perspective it fails badly by not giving the correct info

Which is the lesser of two evils?

RaraRachael · 01/10/2020 20:00

I must be very naive, but it never occurred to me to give a false number or that other people would Hmm

jasjas1973 · 01/10/2020 20:01

@Xenia Unless she has the app and the other passengers have too, no one will be forced to isolate.
Given her stupidity, i doubt she even knows what a smartphone is.

Does go to show the weakness of the system when most empoyers do not have to pay anyone forced to isolate and the Govt won't help either unless you are on UC.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/10/2020 20:01

"you can actually be fined for this in Germany where I live. Not a huge amount, but seems fair."

If you've given a false name and number, not sure how the police will find you!

This. I’ve been to many places where this is is their method. I went in a bar a couple of weeks ago and it was an open book where people popped their name and number down then the next person in line did the same. Ridiculous. No data protection at all. Any one stood at the back of you could get your contact details.

They're not giving false info because they don't want people to see their name and number on a piece of paper - loads of them may even be in the phone book anyway! They're doing it because they don't want to have to stay at home for two weeks.
Facelikearustytractor · 01/10/2020 20:04

Didn't some women get texts from some weird stalker guy where they had to give their number for track and trace. I think this might be why some people do this and the fact that the system is badly organised anyway.

Mrshook · 01/10/2020 20:05

It had never occurred to me to provide a false number. I am gobsmacked at the ignorance and selfishness of some people here. Utter twats.

Or others just do it because the rules don't apply to them! Like the ones on here!

Cos when the test comes back positive it says "yes this is sarah in Northamptonshire, with the skinny latte and chocolate muffin to go" strain.

You do realise thet still could have a caught it from anywhere/everywhere else

You don't say!

But it will help to track and trace outbreaks you do realise that don't you? 🙄

ilovesooty · 01/10/2020 20:08

@Whatwouldscullydo

Why is it the the people who don't want to give out their numbers to strangers the cunts as opposed to the people who went out knowing they were sick?

Shouldn't the anger be aimed at them and they the ones told to stay out of cafes and pubs and the other businesses doing it, rather than the ones who are rightly suspicious of handing over private information when they realky dont have any idea what they arw doing with it

I think they're both despicable. Information is kept for 21 days and then shredded. Anyone can find that out but the information should of course be provided.
Russell19 · 01/10/2020 20:08
@BashfulClam - that’s the point... I’m fine with them not contacting me, I don’t care if someone the other side of the cafe tests + a few days later. I have to work
You don't have to infect everyone else you come into contact with though....very selfish.

Whatwouldscullydo · 01/10/2020 20:08

Not when people can't get tests
Are asymptomatic

CokeEnStock · 01/10/2020 20:09

This is the WHOLE fucking point of test and trace. The GOvt are doing a bad enough job. If everyone else doesn't take it seriously this will all drag on and on. I can't believe how selfish people are.

Boobissue · 01/10/2020 20:10

If this was aimed at me @Whatwouldscullydo I have no idea what you're saying!

Utter gibberish!

Gwenhwyfar · 01/10/2020 20:11

"But oh no! turns out they will only do this IF the positive case has been in close contact with someone else that they can ID."

Isn't that fair enough? The app, at least where I live, only does something if you come into close contact with someone for at least 15 minutes.

ilovesooty · 01/10/2020 20:14

@RaraRachael

I must be very naive, but it never occurred to me to give a false number or that other people would Hmm
You're not naive. You're decent and responsible.
Procrastination4 · 01/10/2020 20:15

I can’t believe that people can be so irresponsible. How is contact tracing supposed to work if people are going to be so stupid? I’m glad I’m living in another country! I only hope that people here aren’t acting in such a selfish and ignorant manner. As a PP said, if people don’t want to be contacted, they should stay at home!
