To ask if giving a false phone number is a thing?

DuckyMcDuck · 01/10/2020 18:31

Went to a cafe with a friend, we sat outside but she was asked for her phone number. Once we sat down, she admitted that she always gives a false number and so does everyone she knows.

Is this really a common thing? I haven't been in places very much but have always given my number when asked.

The pub

thenightsky · 01/10/2020 19:43

@Boobissue

More concerned with keeping a roof over my families head then saving the world One person at a time

More concerned with going to the pub or cafe you mean!

No, Boobeissue is concerned with not earning money to pay her rent/mortgage. Where did she mention the pub? FFS
teenagetantrums · 01/10/2020 19:43

@Potterpotterpotter.…I have been out twice in last month...always more than 2meters away from other customers...if l tested positive l would of course tell people bl was with...I love the in an area with one of lowest Infection rates in country and worked all through lockdown...l think I'm better at assessing risks than Boris tbh

Duggeehugs82 · 01/10/2020 19:43

@Boobissue

I've always given a false number. I wouldn't answer an unknown call anyway so makes no difference.

Good to see the great British public pulling together!

If you don't want to give the details or answer a private number within 14 days, then don't fucking go anywhere that requires your details.

Why do the rules not apply to you?

This 100%
jasjas1973 · 01/10/2020 19:43

the forms we all, in the main, fill out accurately, are a complete waste of time, TnT do not use them

Boobissue · 01/10/2020 19:44

@thenightsky I'm not the one not giving my details! You e read the "requote" totally wrong.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/10/2020 19:44
@Potterpotterpotter but if someone is sitting near you in a cafe and you test positive that person needs to know
Someone you don't know shouldn't be sitting near you though. The app, at least where I live, only does something if you've been in close contact with a positive person for more than 15 minutes. It's silly to say that anyone in the same pub or cafe should self-isolate.

I give my real number, but I completely understand people who don't even though I don't agree with them. Obviously, people don't want to be stuck inside for 2 weeks, even if they can afford it.

hammeringinmyhead · 01/10/2020 19:45

Good lord. I didn't realise there were so many complete arseholes doing this out there.

hula008 · 01/10/2020 19:45

Why is it the the people who don't want to give out their numbers to strangers the cunts as opposed to the people who went out knowing they were sick?

Because most people don't know they have Covid until they develop symptoms, which can be up to 2 weeks after contacting (and spreading) the virus.

hula008 · 01/10/2020 19:46

@Whatwouldscullydo

Why is it the the people who don't want to give out their numbers to strangers the cunts as opposed to the people who went out knowing they were sick?

Shouldn't the anger be aimed at them and they the ones told to stay out of cafes and pubs and the other businesses doing it, rather than the ones who are rightly suspicious of handing over private information when they realky dont have any idea what they arw doing with it

No, it's not about people who go out when they're ill. It's about people who were pre-symptomatic. Presumably, they don't know they're ill when they go out, but they get tested later on and realise they would have been infected when they went to the pub.

HaggieMaggie · 01/10/2020 19:46

I think it’s unreasonable to give a false number, no wonder we can’t get a grip on this fucking virus.

anniemouse · 01/10/2020 19:46

I'm sad to hear about this.

Very selfish.

However, I am not surprised people won't give their real details as they can't afford a 2 week loss of pay if they are told to self isolate. But at the same time they still want to socialise, go out to to public places - potentially infecting everyone else.

Nice!

Source for this?
lockeddownandcrazy · 01/10/2020 19:47

Depends if you trust them not to use the data in other ways - eg sell it on to a marketing company.

JassyRadlett · 01/10/2020 19:47

This thread is full of reasons we’re going to be in this crappy situation much longer than we need to be, more people will lose their jobs and their livelihoods than need to, and more people will be ill and die than need to.

But you do you hun!

I’ve been very critical of track and trace but I’m starting to have sympathy for them now.

LynetteScavo · 01/10/2020 19:49

If I was t prepared to self isolate I wouldn't go out. In fact I haven't been out since mid August.
I can understand why people would give a false number- the system was always going to be abused. There will be people wanting to go out for a rare celebration who cannot afford to isolate who give false details. There will also be dick heads who go out all the time, give false numbers just because they are liars who don't give a damn.

hammeringinmyhead · 01/10/2020 19:49

What marketing company?! "Oh yes, hello, would you like to buy this list? It's all people who have a specific interest in going outside and entering public buildings."
Janevaljane · 01/10/2020 19:49

I rarely go out but tbh I'd be very tempted to give a false number. I am a single parent and need to work for as long as possible. If I socially distanced, washed my hands and didn't use the loo or mix with anyone then the chances of me having caught it are slim to none.

Dahlietta · 01/10/2020 19:49

Eh? Is this about Covid? I thought some bloke had asked her out. Loads of people give fake numbers in those circumstances. I certainly have.

bristolone · 01/10/2020 19:50

Wow

@Potterpotterpotter you are a horrible individual.

Desperate to have some normality and something to look forward to but people like you will keep this going.

What an incredibly selfish attitude.

anniemouse · 01/10/2020 19:51

@hammeringinmyhead

Unfortunately it seems that there are!

My teen DD was told to self isolate as her school year bubble had a positive case. Yet the amount of people I knew who admitted if it were their DD/DS they would still let them see friends, go out to restuarants and attend after school activites (as it has already been paid for and they wouldn't get refunds) was quite frankly alarming.

Dahlietta · 01/10/2020 19:51

But just to clarify, not to track and trace type things - I always give them my real number

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 01/10/2020 19:51

Unfortunately some cafes I’ve been to just have a paper sheet to fill out and you can see everyone else’s details and they can see yours.

From a keeping your personal data safe perspective it fails badly.

So no, I’m afraid I don’t think people giving false info are stupid. It’s a difficult one, but in most areas the statistical risks of getting or spreading CV are still low.

jasjas1973 · 01/10/2020 19:54

@Gwenhwyfar Read my previous post? bottom of page 3.

So, Personal experience, the Pub affected did not have to upload to TnT, did not have to phone anyone, indeed didn't even have to clean the pub..

they did all of these though because they are decent people.
