To ask if giving a false phone number is a thing?

DuckyMcDuck · 01/10/2020 18:31

Went to a cafe with a friend, we sat outside but she was asked for her phone number. Once we sat down, she admitted that she always gives a false number and so does everyone she knows.

Is this really a common thing? I haven't been in places very much but have always given my number when asked.

Do the pub provide you details of how your information will be stored, who will have access to it and when it will be destroyed?!

It's amazing how nine months ago GDPR was being screamed by everyone and it's all gone to shit in the name of 'saving lives'

GeologyRox · 01/10/2020 19:11

Yep, and it's part of the reason I imo that some businesses want to only use the QR code, have had several Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse visit where I work - would expect the phone number was fictional too.
But perhaps if people just keep whining "It's not fair" loud enough it'll all go away.
The reaction to a few restrictions and asking people for a bit of cooperation while enjoying themselves is so way over the top and out of proportion, it's a meal or a drink out and you're being asked to give details so these places can be as safe as possible and outbreaks shut down quickly. It's hardly a massive life changing event with lifelong repercussions. If you don't want to give your details then don't go, don't be a twat and go anyway and then become an obstacle just because you have a need to be cool and edgy. Customers are so used to calling the shots they really cannot handle it when these businesses are actually sticking to their guns over all this - because they're the ones stand to get the punishment and fines.

Smellbellina · 01/10/2020 19:12

That is the weirdest thing to do.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/10/2020 19:13

@teenagetantrums what happens if you test positive, you may have passed it on to someone in the cafe.

@Potterpotterpotter don’t you care if you might pass it on to someone and they might then pass it on unwittingly to a vulnerable person.

If people can’t afford to take 2 weeks off work don’t go to cafes etc. I hope they start getting stricter and ask for ID

museumum · 01/10/2020 19:13

Ffs! Really?
I’m honestly really disappointed in people. It never occurred to me to give a fake number - if you don’t want to play the game don’t go to places. I would always want to know if the person who served me or at the next table had tested positive.
Fucks sake.

NachoNachoMan · 01/10/2020 19:14

Okay I read that first post very wrong - I thought you meant giving her number to people asking her out 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

Boobissue · 01/10/2020 19:14

@Potterpotterpotter

I don’t have any vulnerable friends or family members.

I doubt with that attitude you have many friends at all!

You've also got no fucking balls because you lie and can't say "it's none of your business".

slipperywhensparticus · 01/10/2020 19:14

For covid or for a man? If I get an unwanted male persisting at me i give a fake number for covid I use the app

Whatwouldscullydo · 01/10/2020 19:15

I would always want to know if the person who served me or at the next table had tested positive.

Yet you touch the signing in book and pen they touched ?

Ajd the app doesn't check you out you could have been there hours before hand and still get a call.

Boobissue · 01/10/2020 19:16

Yeah imagine saving lives bring more important than you getting some unsolicited calls or mail.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/10/2020 19:17

@Potterpotterpotter but if someone is sitting near you in a cafe and you test positive that person needs to know

museumum · 01/10/2020 19:18

Everywhere I’ve checked in has had a QR code with an option to check out (not “the” app, I’m in Scotland anyway). Or they’ve had a pot of clean pens and a different pot for used pens to be sanitised. And there’s never been a “book” it’s been a fresh slip of paper.

I actually have a lot of friends 😂

Well considering it’s mandatory and you have to give a number I’m hardly going to say that am I 😂 I actually want to eat or drink in the pub or place I’m visiting 😂

Sheknowsaboutme · 01/10/2020 19:19

Id rather keep away from bars/restaurants at the moment. I’m not happy giving my number nor downloading an app.

Boobissue · 01/10/2020 19:21

You sound absolutely delightful @Potterpotterpotter!

It's mandatory to give correct details, not crap details?

Dear god, some very very thick people in this world!

rosie1959 · 01/10/2020 19:21

I am amazed at the selfishness I would never give a false number.
My DD is a type 1 diabetic I need to know if I have been in contact with a covid sufferer
Obviously some care little what happens to their fellow human being.

Well they’re not going to know are they...

Whatwouldscullydo · 01/10/2020 19:22

And what are they doing with the paper?

Properly shredding it? Leaving it on counters? Is it visible to other customers? Does the air con blow it into the floor....

Its private information I dont want it on oueces of paper in a busy shop where a half decent camera phone can zoom in on it whilst someone pretends to scan the code at the till ..

I understand the concept fully. It’s not about being ‘thick’ 😂 I’m not going to give my real details just like thousands of others won’t. I have to give details so they can have whichever name I think of at the time.
Boobissue · 01/10/2020 19:24

@rosie1959 as your daughter is not one of @Potterpotterpotter friends or family it really doesn't matter!

Disgusting attitude but that's how some people feel.

In the places I've been I've given my details on the time of online booking or filled in forms that I've put in a sealed box at the place. I haven't been anywhere since the QR code came in

Maybe some places are doing what you describe but I haven't come across it and I've been out quite a lot.

More concerned with keeping a roof over my families head then saving the world One person at a time

Khajit · 01/10/2020 19:27

I never even realised this was a thing people did! How stupid is that?

If test and trace falls apart we will probably end up with another fucking lockdown.

Paul72 · 01/10/2020 19:27

I give my correct number but I wonder how Track & Trace prove who they are. If they phone how do they prove they are not a scam call?

I had a call from BT today, my phone line is not with BT. I've had calls from Microsoft but despite me hanging up my computer still works.
How do Track & Trace prove they are genuine?
