My weird phobias, what are yours?

LioneIRichTea · 11/09/2020 07:57

I don’t mean spiders, or flying or heights... or even small spaces. I think that’s pretty normal tbh 🙂

I was telling DP about my ‘fears’ and he said I’m strange 😄, so are these strange phobias?

Clusters of seeds or other small things - like the inside of a bell pepper 🤢 I can’t look at it, it makes me feel sick and I just want to crush it 😕 My neighbours have clusters of moss on their garage in little balls and I really want to scrape it off!!

Machinery under water - more specifically, grates in a swimming pool. I don’t know why, they’re just dark and unknown and I think I’ll get my hair caught 🤷🏾‍♀️😆

This one is probably weird I guess and it will be hard to explain. Places that are too empty/abandoned or me accidentally ending up somewhere I shouldn’t be. In work once I took the lift and I pressed the wrong button and ended up in the basement (doors opened it was pitch black and oppressive smelt of damp) 😣 doors took ages to close too! Then recently, went to the coast for a few days, found this small deserted beach backed into rocky caves. At first I wanted to go down and have the beach to ourselves and then for some reason I was filled with absolute dread and I couldn’t 😑

Ok so I’ve possibly outed myself as a weirdo, what are yours? If anyone has similar too, I’d be happy knowing I’m not alone!

Slugs and snails. My partner has to get my car out if it's been raining. If I see one I can be physically sick. My dog rolled in one once, i was so unwell.
Empty swimming pools spook me too.
I have frequent toilet dreams whereby there is no privacy, or worse still being seen on the loo by my class.

JumpingJamboree · 11/09/2020 15:01

Food touching. But only specific food touch, for instance spag bol is fine because the mince and sauce is supposed to go on top. What freaks me out are things like carvery's where people literally pile their food up like a mountain and it is all touching. Makes me feel sick. Mine has to have designated areas on the plate and things are not allowed to touch apart from the gravy obviously.
I can also only eat one food at a time (again unless it is something like curry or chilli). I can't do any of this bit of potato, bit of meat, bit of veg all on the same fork bite 🤮

@Ludo19

Ok so I'm terrified of little people and I don't mean fictional ones.....like dwarfs and midgets I'm sorry if that's not p.c. but that's my phobia.

I know 2 people with the same phobia. One is my husband's best friend. 6'4", strong as anything, yet he will nearly pass out if he sees a little person.

Nicetableinnit · 11/09/2020 15:08

bare male chests give me the heebies - put a shirt on boys, no-one wants to see it...

SilverOtter · 11/09/2020 15:19

Pencils😂

morefun · 11/09/2020 15:22

Someone scrubbing a fabric like a carpet Envy my daughter mentioned that she hates it too, and I've never said it to her.

notforonesecond · 11/09/2020 15:25

Monk music
Capital punishment
Mirrors in the dark (actually, that’s not weird, it’s just common sense)

Bonus fun fact: as a child, I managed to convince myself I’d was safe in the dark as long as my nails weren’t visible. I still believe this now - if I get scared I hide my nails to make myself feel better. How’s that for bonkers?

notforonesecond · 11/09/2020 15:28

Oh and gold gravy left over on a plate. Even thinking about it gives me the willies.

JustMeAndMyTins · 11/09/2020 15:28

Cellophane or little bits of wrapper (can't unwind the top off a packet of chewing gum, for example - I have to unpick the seal). I can't explain it but it makes me feel sick...

Can't bear the thought of someone touching the back of my knees or anything touching my throat. It's not a sensation thing. The thought of ligaments and my windpipe just make me feel sick.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 11/09/2020 15:33

Space - pictures of galaxies etc give me the heebie-jeebies. It used to be so bad I couldn't look up at the stars!

I have the weird toilet dreams too

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 11/09/2020 15:39

Oh the driving over bridges one someone mentioned earlier- I do it but have vivid thoughts the whole time. When that bridge collapsed in Italy a couple of years ago, it was like a nightmare.

Wobbly teeth. Quite a few children I know know that I do t like it and will deliberately seek me out.

Things near my eyes. Especially if I’m lying down, I think they are going to hit me in the eyes. Just thinking about that makes me feel sick.

MostTacticalNameChange · 11/09/2020 15:42

@JustMeAndMyTins I'm the same with little bits of paper. Plastic is ok, but paper can dissolve and tear and get in things. I hate that haagen daaz has a papery rim when you take off the plastic film. Paper straws are a nono. The idea of chewing paper to make those spit balls is just too much.

Ketchup and bean juice too but have to deal with that since dc. I scald myself washing up bowls and plates it has touched.

It was me who mentioned the bridges. Its awful isn't it! Once a colleague offered me a lift home and I got out and walked over the bridge because we got stuck in traffic and I had a panic attack Confused. Luckily (?) we worked in mental health so were so used to unusual behaviour that he didn't bat an eyelid Grin

And yes to teeth Envy < not envy. Why would anyone want to be a dentist?! The x- rays of jaws with 2 sets of teeth in make me feel weird.

GarlicMonkey · 11/09/2020 15:47

People on stilts. I'm absolutely terrified of them. They could be dressed as fairies, throwing £20 notes at people & I'd be off in the opposite direction.

Cheesymonster · 11/09/2020 16:20

Wind turbines. I once drove past some unexpectedly at a very close distance, and felt so sick they were just so HUGE. I started a thread about it!

TheFormidableMrsC · 11/09/2020 16:27

My daughter has a terrible phobia of baked beans. Was a nightmare when she was in halls at university. I can't bear the feel of silk. It gives me the same feeling as nails on a blackboard 👀

TheFormidableMrsC · 11/09/2020 16:28

@veryvery

I have had bad dreams about terrible toilets. Either blocked and over flowing or with no privacy arranged round the room like armchairs or with curtains round like hospital beds or with weird flushing mechanisms and strange shape that you have to climb up to. Don't know what that says about me!BlushConfused
Oh God me too! It's so weird. I'd love to know what it means but have never been able to find out.
terrelontane · 11/09/2020 16:59

I also get the toilet dreams, but I find them weirdly exciting! In real life I'm really paranoid about toilet locks and privacy, but in my dreams I seek out the broken ones for some reason.

butterpuffed · 11/09/2020 17:00

Fish. Slimy little gits with poppy eyes.

IHateCoronavirus · 11/09/2020 17:02

I have genuphobia Shock

FizzyPink · 11/09/2020 17:07

Sick for me.
Feeling sick, being sick, someone else being sick, someone saying they feel sick......ill have a panic attack. I won’t go in a taxi with anyone that’s very drunk and I freak out the whole time on a plane that someone might be sick and I won’t be able to get away from it.

I have no idea how I’m going to cope with having children

Kaiserin · 11/09/2020 17:16

Someone scrubbing a fabric like a carpet envy my daughter mentioned that she hates it too, and I've never said it to her.

Aaaaarrrrrgh, just thinking about that kind of noise makes my skin crawl.

It's the first thing I have to check when shopping for clothes: do they make "that noise" when you run your nails against them. To me it's worse than chalk VS blackboard or similar noises, it really grates.

A few other phobias (not that unusual):

  • phones, especially receiving unexpected calls
  • dead things (like, small dead bird on the patio). Can't look at them, can't touch them, need to bleach the spot before I can step on it again (in comparison, I would find bird poo a bit yuck, but I'd just wipe it off, not be terrified of it)
CarrieMoonbeams · 11/09/2020 17:30

People taking wet woolly gloves off with their teeth. Aaargh! I can't look away from them though, I sit there with my shoulders going higher and higher up towards my ears! I must have done it myself as a kid because I can still remember that squeaky feeling on my teeth.

The underside of a tree that's been blown over in the woods.

And yes to the PP who said monk music. My DH used to own a CD of gregorian chants. Oof, made me proper shudder.

Masks. I had to walk past a shop years ago on my way to work, and during October every year they used to put stupid masks (Donald Duck etc) on the mannequins in the shop window. I used to scurry past, head down, stomach in a knot. Yuk.

BaublesAndGlitter · 11/09/2020 17:35

Mine is ladybirds. I'm not a fan of bugs in general, but when they're around me I can calmly remove them.
Ladybirds is an out and out phobia though - so much so, that when they were swarming 🤢 last summer, Someone in the lift with me in our office pointed out there was one on the ceiling and I got out of a lift on the wrong floor in a very obvious panic.
Have also jumped out of my car when one got in and was flying around. A very kind passer by got it out for me.
If I'm anxious or stressed I dream about being locked in a small space with hundreds of them and it takes ages to shake that off.

I also can't handle other people touching feet (mine or theirs). It makes me feel all wobbly and uneasy.

My dad is afraid of wind turbines. We were in the car when we passed one and he went kind of white and stiff until it was out of sight.

ClarasZoo · 11/09/2020 17:36

The little bit of white stuff that dangles off egg yolk- I have to remove it!
