Please say I'm right! I think heels are dated weapons of misogyny!

Phew, that feels better:

My DD 20 and her friends never wear heels now. Lovely dresses with cons or chunky boots!

FinnyStory · 25/08/2020 13:47

Yes, I love that young women "dress up" now in lovely outfits with trainers.

I work with troubled teens and "inappropriate" clothing for the girls is a continuous issue but they don't wear heels, ever. No matter how tight or revealing the outfit is, trainers or sliders.

tiredanddangerous · 25/08/2020 13:48

Yes! I'm sure they'll come back in again at some point but having spent my teens/twenties teetering about on heels I'm quite jealous!

ilikebooksandplants · 25/08/2020 13:49

Yes, and I for one could not be more glad they’re out of fashion.

Give me a nice flat any day of the week!

Me too! I would have LOVED to go clubbing in trainers

As an aside, have fancy places adjusted their dress codes accordingly?

In my day, even places where dress was fairly casual would have a no trainers rule and I still find myself wondering if it will cause a problem when dressing for the kind of day out that may end up in a fancy restaurant.

Yesterdayforgotten · 25/08/2020 13:52

So much better for their feet, I would have loved to have worn flats instead of the stupid shoes I wore on nights out when I was younger, not sure my outfits would have gone with them though!

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 25/08/2020 13:52

My teenage DD has never worn heels and never intends to. She has loads of cool trainers and boots.

JaJaDingDong · 25/08/2020 13:55

I think heels are out of fashion for all age groups aren't they? Thank God!

I've never worn heels, and I've never seen my mid-20s DDs wear them either.

RegularHumanBartender · 25/08/2020 13:57

We were in a fairly fancy couple of bars on Friday and Saturday night, in Chester. Virtually all the young women were dressed in going out gear, with trainers/flats. It was women my age who were the ones tottering around in heels like we have always done, and thinking, could I really have worn my fucking flats?!!

seayork2020 · 25/08/2020 13:59

I have never wore them (well a small heel for my wedding) I don't like the look of them and they don't look comfortable at all

Some have, but not enough according to Jess Glynne

Exactly, I think heels are for my mum's generation, and maybe the older half of mine.

I live and work in London too and no one, bar no one gets on the tube in heels unless they're not from round here!

You see, I would never wear them out & about in the day, but I quite like a pair of heels with a smart outfit at work or going out (as long as no long walks involved).

HellsBills · 25/08/2020 14:06

Maybe I'm just old but when I was a teen in the early 90s no one ever wore heels, it was all trainers or dresses with DM boots.

AntsInPenzance · 25/08/2020 14:07

Aside from the rare instance of corporate dress policy, women wearing heels is entirely their own choice. 99% of men either wouldn't notice or care if a woman wore flats. Most men don't even care what shoes they wear.

Chrispackhamspoodle · 25/08/2020 14:11

No heels when I was a teen/early 20s in the nineties either. Then again my teen is wearing the same 90s clothes as I wore then..DMS,little dresses,Jean's,combats, little tops ,hoodies and trainers.Heels were not cool in the crowd I hung out with.

Laiste · 25/08/2020 14:13

@RegularHumanBartender

I agree it's quite aging to be in high heels nowadays.

However - the shops are still full of them and a lot (if not most) of the photos of models modeling clothes still show the outfits with heels.

I used to be in 5'' stilettos for every occasion. And i still think certain outfits look better with heels as they lengthen your legs.

Yes to the comfy flats though. Perhaps bunions will consigned to the history books soon Grin

Exactly. I only wore heels a) when my mother insisted when I was in my 20s (in the 90s) and b) for a few years in my 30s. But that soon ended and my work wardrobe is all loafers and brogues these days. And I have several pairs of fancy flats for evenings out. Heels seem very dated.
Michaelbaubles · 25/08/2020 14:57

I’m 40 and I used to wear heels to work every single day! In fact for about 10 years I didn’t own a pair of flat shoes! Now I haven’t worn heels apart from the odd occasion for a few years. In work the other day (first day back with lots of people) I noticed that two women were in heels and it seemed a very dated look (although they had nice outfits/shoes).

BadDucks · 25/08/2020 15:05

I’m in my forties and don’t think I owned a pair of flat shoes or trainers until my mid 30’s. Wore heals everyday for work even though it was never very practical. I’m flats all the way now! I think stiletto’s are very dated, can’t imagine ever buying them again.

RegularHumanBartender · 25/08/2020 15:15

I'm forty too and I still wear heels to work because I just prefer the look in a suit. They aren't comfortable though and part of me thinks I have probably been conditioned to think that I should wear them/look better in them.

I will definitely not be wearing heels on nights out in future. I end up carrying them and walking around barefoot after an hour anyway!

Yesterdayforgotten · 25/08/2020 15:26

Wedges replaced heels for nights out last time I went (not sure now) I have young dc so abit out the loop!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/08/2020 15:29

I'm 30 and I stopped wearing heels about 5 years ago. I hate them, so uncomfortable! I wear chunky boots on a night out.

Fairybatman · 25/08/2020 15:33

I think lockdown might bring about the demise of heels, especially stilettos. If you wear them all the time you get used to them, after a break of months most people are going to struggle to get used to them again and I bet a lot don’t bother.
