Please say I'm right! I think heels are dated weapons of misogyny!

Phew, that feels better:

I seem to recall they were also out of fashion when I was at uni in the late 90s, but they came back...

PurpleFlower1983 · 25/08/2020 23:47

@FinnyStory I went to The Ivy last week and changed into my heels before I went in only to find loads of people in flats/trainers so yes, it seems they have changed their dress codes!

Notcontent · 25/08/2020 23:52

I agree that they look very dated and only seem appropriate in limited contexts - e.g.very formal occasions like a wedding or some work places.

For teens in particular I think heels are very uncool! It’s all about trainers, big boots, etc, sometimes with a platform.

Grobagsforever · 25/08/2020 23:53

39, never ever worn heels as they are out dated misogynistic wank badgery for the brainwashed.

Told both DD's I would be disappointed if they ever ruined their beautiful bodies by wearing them.

Glad to hear Gen Z are on board

Charmatt · 25/08/2020 23:53

I love hèels and wear them most of the time. My choice entirely. There is no misogyny pushing me to and never has been. My parents encouraged me to make my own preferences and it wouldn't occur to my OH to influence my choices.

I own only one single pair of flat shoes.

Grobagsforever · 25/08/2020 23:54

@Pandacub7 don't be ridiculous

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 26/08/2020 00:11

I love heels but then I also love ballet flats too & wedges. In fact I just love shoes!
Like @Pandacub7 I have some very comfy high heels but they are platforms or have a hidden platform so you don't get the pressure on the balls of your feet.
I would say just wear whatever you want.

MrsToothyBitch · 26/08/2020 00:20

I honestly wear my heels for myself. I'm quite short so I get some body confidence from the height. I've always stayed away from silly sky scraper heels and anything where the shape looks pinchy.

I've had far nastier ankle injuries in flats than in heels and I've cast aside far more pairs of flats for being uncomfortable, weirdly shaped and hurting my feet (especially squashing my damaged foot and causing agony ) being impossible to keep on or flimsy/poorly soled than I have pairs of heels. Worn in stilettos can be pretty comfy- I still wear my mums ones from the 80s.

Ozgirl75 · 26/08/2020 00:45

I’m 42 and have hardly ever worn heels. As a teen it was DM boots and Vans trainers. University was really dress down and I remember visiting my friend in Leeds and having to borrow clothes as she said my “skanky drum and bass gear would not work here” Grin.
I wore a trouser suit at work with chunky heeled boots and then went to ballet flats.
I did wear heels sometimes but I just hated that burning balls of the feet pain and achy feet or going home carrying my shoes and ripping my tights.

SarahBellam · 26/08/2020 01:07

I think heels look very ‘Carry on’ film these days. They are ridiculous things when you think about it. You immediately put yourself at a disadvantage when you can’t run or walk easily or quickly, just for the sake of having a wiggly bum and legs that appear a few inches longer. In my work most of us wear brogues or loafers (Doctor Marten’s do a great selection these days), or maybe a boot with a low heel, and flattish sandals in the summer. I can’t imagine why anyone would choose to wear a heel, except for a bit of dress up in the bedroom.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 26/08/2020 01:15

I can certainly run in heels.

choli · 26/08/2020 03:02

It's even more ridiculously Sex and the City. Vile show.

lyralalala · 26/08/2020 04:07

I wear heels quite often. I'm only 5'1 and I've always hated being short so like having a few inches more height. My DH hates heels. He thinks they are ridiculous and impractical. He also firmly believes they are dangerous both in terms of injuries and preventing women escaping a dodgy situation - I do concede his point in that and tend to stick a pair of fold-up flats in my bag if I'm walking home, even though I'm happy to wear heels all night long.

My teens wear heels sometimes on nights out. Their friends are split between some who wear heels all the time and some who never wear them. One tends to wear them more than the other and thankfully neither have the habit of a couple of the girls of wearing ridiculously high heels that they can barely walk in. That (along with shoes flapping because they dont' fit right) is my absolute pet hate.

zigzagbetty · 26/08/2020 04:18

@OverTheRubicon

What does everyone do who has big feet? I'm quite short and slim (and only 32, so want to dress on the younger side) but with size 7s and I love flats, but when I wear trainers with dresses or loafers with fitted trousers they look like clown shoes..
I'm size 10 and feel your pain! I can't find loafers that look right at all, normally wear ballet type shoes or lace up pumps.
seayork2020 · 26/08/2020 04:39

I don't wearing a pair of shoes but needing to take a second pair? why not just wear the second pair?

and I also hate it when people trip and fall over in them in front of me so I nearly trip over then - but then same people (including my own child) who don't lace their shoes properly then get to the bottom or top of escalators and get the lace caught and I trip over them.

or as I am short lean on me to walk because your heels are too high then giggle and say 'you don't mind do you?'

If you can't walk in all instances with your shoes then don't wear them!

Eekay · 26/08/2020 04:44

I'm mid 40s. Lived in heels constantly from teens to early 30s but then, just stopped. Wedge sandals sometimes but proper heels only extremely rarely. Twice a year max!. I think I only own two pairs. As a youngster, probably nearer twenty pairs Shock
My DDs are early 20s and I can count on one hand the occasions I've seen them in heels.
Mind you, didn't Posh Spice say back in the day that she "couldn't concentrate in flats" Grin

Pinkyandthebrainz · 26/08/2020 04:46

Heels aren't dated, flats have just become more acceptable and permitted in restaurants, bars and clubs. I'm late 20s for reference. There are certain outfits which look better with a heel. I can run and walk in heels and agree if you buy decent ones they don't hurt your feet.

famousforwrongreason · 26/08/2020 04:51

@HellsBills

Maybe I'm just old but when I was a teen in the early 90s no one ever wore heels, it was all trainers or dresses with DM boots.
Same and I never learned to walk in them
Goatinthegarden · 26/08/2020 04:55

@Lucindainthesky

How is wearing less comfortable footwear which is more difficult to walk in pleasing to ourselves though?
Because I think they go well with my outfit and I feel good in them. 🤷‍♀️ As you say, they’re out of fashion, so I’m clearly not impressing anyone else.

I don’t have to walk miles at work, but I am on my feet for most of the day. I like that they force me to stand up straighter and feel they improve my posture.

They are less comfortable than my running trainers or hiking boots, but I can’t wear them to work. I choose heeled shoes carefully and don’t find that they are any less comfortable than the loafers or brogues I often wear at work too. I have a pair of DMs and they are so solid they make me want to cry - they are the most painful shoes I own by far.

user1481840227 · 26/08/2020 05:06

I've no idea if they are in or out of fashion because I don't pay attention to what they wear, but if casual footwear is in now it's just a trend, heels will be back...then casual again and so on!

I don't think it's great to see all teenagers acting like sheep either...buying the same chunky boots that everyone wears just because it's the done thing.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 26/08/2020 06:10

What many young women are wearing now we wore in the early 90’s, Floaty or Lycra dresses with trainers, dm’s, canvas ankle boots I often wore ballet shoes (I’be never liked trainers)

Then mid 90’s it suddenly went all glam long dresses and heels to go clubbing in I loved the look and dressing up raving moved onto smaller clubs

I love heels I think they look good with the right outfit they will come back in fashion at some point

IncandescentSilver · 26/08/2020 06:31

Yes, very old fashioned and can come across as a bit try too hard cringe.

If you need height, I like those platform type squishy shoes (like K Pop style). Very comfortable.

I've never really worn heels, the most I've worn is wedge or small platform shoes, and even those can seem a bit too try too hard these days.

Graciebobcat · 26/08/2020 06:36

Yeah, it's similar fashion to early 90s. I'm so glad stilettoes are out of fashion, I wish they would fuck off out of existence TBH.

everwork · 26/08/2020 06:56

@Pandacub7

Also, heels are far far more comfortable than flats. I can’t walk in flats, apart from trainers.
Don't be ridiculous, of course beels aren't more comfortable than proper shoes GrinGrin

@TracyBeakerSoYeah

I can certainly run in heels.
Not in the same way as in flats though, come on
