to think heels are now out of fashion for teens/young adults?

Please say I'm right! I think heels are dated weapons of misogyny!

Phew, that feels better:

Heels may have been the vented for men, but only for a certain category of aristocratic man who was advertising that he was rich enough not to need to work or walk anywhere. Blacksmiths and farm hands were not wearing heels. It just transferred to women. Same as being pale was saying you didn’t need to work in the fields, and later a tan meant you were rich enough to holiday abroad all the time. It’s about advertising that you don’t need to function like the plebs. That’s not why you maybe choose to wear them, but that’s the history behind it. Same with long nails, corsets the lot.

Bluntness100 · 25/08/2020 18:23

Agree, skinny jeans, heels and a pretty top looks dated (though was easy and used to look good)

I think straight jeans, leather leggings, a nice top and good heeled boots, suede for example, is still fashionable. Suspect the issue is none of us have been properly out for months due to Covid.

minnieok · 25/08/2020 18:24

Dd totters our in 4 inch heels on a night out, she's 5'2. Flats for university though

FinnyStory · 25/08/2020 18:29

I went out out for the first time in ages last weekend, just to the local but it was Satirday night (which means people dress up more?).

I met a friend's new GF for the first time (they've actually been together since just before lockdown). For various reasons I didn't want to look like I'd tried too hard, I wore a tshirt dress and trainers.

She was completely lovely but was wearing black trousers, nice top and sky high heels. I was actually shocked the first time she stood up as I realised I haven't seen a young person dressed like that in ages. She would be early 30s, I am much older. It took us ages to cross the car park when we left, why would you hinder yourself deliberately like that?

MrsToothyBitch · 25/08/2020 18:35

I think they are out of fashion for that age but I'm sure they'll come back! I'm 30 and I wear heels lots, I love them and I hate the dress and ugly shoe look on myself- I only do it if it's the more suitable option- but it's all choice.

I'm quite short and have leg & foot issues anyway so I like the height and I'm probably more resistant to what I perceive "ugly shoes" than most people.

midwifeync · 25/08/2020 18:49

I'm early 20's and at the very most wear a 'heeled sandal' which basically doesn't count as a heel it's that low. But only if I'm going 'out out' I haven't worn proper heels since about 2018

BlueJava · 25/08/2020 18:52

Finally I am in fashion!! I am mid fifties and have never worn heels!

TorkTorkBam · 25/08/2020 18:58

I used to wear heels a lot. Always at work to look properly professional and get closer to eye level with men. Always on a night out too as that was the done thing and I looked good in them.

Now, never. I feel dated. I notice people wearing heels and notice them looking dated.

I'd no more wear heeled court shoes or strappy sky high going out shoes than I would wear 10 denier black tights.

The80sweregreat · 25/08/2020 19:06

In the 80s the dress codes were different for any clubs and you couldn't wear jeans or trainers ( men or women)
Not sure when it all changed but it is good that the heels are out now ( I didn't wear them anyway as can't balance in them!)
A few of my friends have older teen girls and they seem to wear heels if it's a party photo on face book and they are clubbing ( pre lockdown)
Maybe it depends on where they are going etc?
Men never have these dilemmas about shoes.

Annasgirl · 25/08/2020 19:07

Yes teen DD never wears them and neither did I as a teen, except to my Debs - and boy was that an evening of torture. I ended up taking the shoes off and walking home (long, long story) in my feet and a taffeta dressBlush.

I never wear heels now and I don't think I could any more. When I started work in the mid 1990's I only wore them with skirt suits and wore loafers with trousers most of the time (very Annie Hall I thought). But as I became more senior, I started wearing more heels. Now I never wear heels to work (I have changed career and own my own business now but even so I don't know any woman who wears heels to work anymore).

I agree (as someone of that age group) that women in skinny jeans (especially white), high heels and a "nice top" look dated. And I also agree they are a tool of the patriarchy and women, even unconsciously, wear them for men.

And what is it with law firms and accountancy firms who insist on women wearing skirts and heels ? Is that still a thing? My friends had to stick by this rule all through the 1990's, 2000's and 2010's. I hope the new generation of female grads do not have to.

Justgorgeous · 25/08/2020 19:10

Love heels and will always wear of an evening with jeans or a dress.

tempnamechange98765 · 25/08/2020 19:13

I love this thread!

I'm early 30's and always wore heels on nights out until a few years ago. I hate them and so this is a revelation! I do wear chunky heeled boots with dresses at work (pre lockdown that is).

What would you wear to a wedding though, heels I guess (unless it was summer and flat sandals worked)?

MolotovMocktail · 25/08/2020 19:14

Oh shit, are heeled boots still in fashion? I look about a foot wider in flats Confused

Pinkmakeupbag · 25/08/2020 19:16

Is casual more 'in' now?

I've been in flats for years. Hate heels.

I've noticed lots of pretty dresses styled with trainers lately.

TheNewLook · 25/08/2020 19:19

I haven’t been to a wedding for a couple of years but surely you wouldn’t wear trainers to a wedding? Is it flat shoes with cocktail/evening dresses too??

TheNewLook · 25/08/2020 19:20

A lot of women do enjoy the leg lengthening effect of a heel.

BojoKilledMyMojo · 25/08/2020 19:24

I see loads of young girls wearing heels with little bodycon type dresses. Saw plenty at the weekend in town.

I think it's pretty shit of anybody to try and push their choices on others. If folk want to wear heels, so what???

1984isnow · 25/08/2020 19:30

I am late 20s and I haven't worn heels in nearly a decade. I HATED them. Even though my outfits were dressy and heels suited better, I just couldn't do it after a few times. I was always the shortest in my group aswell so when everyone else wore heels I looked like a teen trying to sneek in to places. But I just couldn't stand the pain and swollen feet the next day, not to mention the constant paranoia after having slipped a few times!

I used to work in my local argos in huge block heels. Cant believe I did that

lockdownmumma123 · 25/08/2020 19:39

I'm 21 and never wear heals really, i do like the look of them it's more the fact my feet kill me! i would wear them to a wedding but small ones, I have a 5 month old and once she starts crawling/toddling about running about after her in heals at a party would result in me breaking something 😂😂

Cheesess · 25/08/2020 19:43

I’ve been wearing flats/trainers to clubs since I was 20. I tried to wear heels a few times but for 10 years Ive only ever worn flats.

geekone · 25/08/2020 19:44

Surely boots can have a heel though? Even Clark’s still sell those I love my boots and don’t have issues with heels. Not a fan of the ballet flat though yuck. Love a trainer.

PhilippaBlake · 25/08/2020 19:45

I rarely wore heels ever, and not at all for the past 15+ years, so I love that they're no longer fashionable. I never really saw the appeal tbh - I don't like the look them at all (though at 5-foot-nothing-much I do see the appeal of an extra few inches)!

I remember tottering around pubs a few times as a teen just because it was the 'done thing' - and subsequently walking home barefoot and comfortable!

MrsToothyBitch · 25/08/2020 19:46

@Waveysnail I used to do a full 8hr day on a shop floor in stilettos. As much as I love them, I'd NEVER be that foolhardy now!
