to think heels are now out of fashion for teens/young adults?

Please say I'm right! I think heels are dated weapons of misogyny!

Phew, that feels better:

Trainers have always been ok at decent clubs! I wore trainers to Cream in the 90s many times.

Haven't worn heels in over 10 years now unless going to a wedding where I'm still a little unsure of wearing flats.

Summer dressy would now be flat sandals and winter is silver brogues or flat ankle boots.

I hope heels never come back into fashion.

feelingverylazytoday · 25/08/2020 19:48

I wouldn't even wear them for a wedding now. You can get smart flat shoes and boots.

ShirleyPhallus · 25/08/2020 19:48

@LioneIRichTea

*I do like a block heel on a boot

Oh god this is SUCH a trinny and susannah way of describing things. Does it go with a red lip, a nude nail and an ecru trouser?*

Oh apologies, I will change the way I speak for you.

“I like block heels on boots now and again”

Is that more acceptable for you? Dick.

Oooooooooooh. Trinny and susannah would be very disappointed in you for using that sort of language. Shame.
LioneIRichTea · 25/08/2020 19:49

@ShirleyPhallus Sad

ShirleyPhallus · 25/08/2020 19:53

Trinny and susannah would find it very sad xxx

TheNewLook · 25/08/2020 20:06

Actually Trinny and Susannah swear like troopers.

Angelina82 · 25/08/2020 20:14

My youngest DD is 22 and has never warn heels. My 27 yr old very rarely either. I’m glad, because I agree with you OP and stopped wearing heels myself by the time I was mid 20’s,which my bunions are pretty grateful for I can tell you Wink

PumpkinPie2016 · 25/08/2020 20:20

I'm 33 and could count on one hand the number of times I wore heels in my teens/twenties. I haven't worn any heels for 8 years (had a small heel when I got married).

I just find them very uncomfortable to wear and I don't seem to be able to walk gracefully in them. I either look like I've had one too many wines or I have all the grace of a baby elephant- neither of which is a good lookBlush

Flats all the way for me.

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 25/08/2020 20:25

I have a few pairs of shoes which have a bit of a heel and I still like them, but definitely not anywhere in the same league as what we wore when we were going out out as teens and younger adults. The thing used to be Louboutins didn't it? That style of giant court shoe used to be considered so elegant!

I am quite fat at the moment and feeling it Sad. A wee heel that you wouldn't really notice seems to add a bit of height, which then makes me look a bit slimmer Blush. So, I have a pair of grey, suede, London Fly ankle boots with a smallish wedge, a pair of black courts with a low, chunky heel and a pair of black knee boots with a lowish, but quite spindly heel. They don't get worn very often; well the grey ones more than the others and actually the courts and black knee boots would probably have more outings, if I was back at work.

I wear white trainers and hiking boots now, more than anything else. But I won't dismiss a bit of a heel. I actually find that more comfortable than very flat high tops.

Goatinthegarden · 25/08/2020 20:29

Hmm, I wear heels at work quite often. I work with all female staff and a class full of children, so I’m fairly sure that I am not wearing them for the benefit of men. I just like feeling tall and fancy at work.

I love a choice of footwear. I have a pile of more practical footwear under my desk for running about in the playground, the commute home etc. and a selection of fancier shoes for pottering around the building.

DH and I like walking to bars and restaurants when we go out so I almost never wear heels when with him.

I think it’s great that people don’t feel they have to wear heels to be fashionable, but I also think we should be able to wear them without judgement that we are doing it to please someone other than ourselves.

Lucindainthesky · 25/08/2020 21:11

How is wearing less comfortable footwear which is more difficult to walk in pleasing to ourselves though?

Lucindainthesky · 25/08/2020 21:13

And of course people don't feel they have to wear heels to be fashionable because heels are now very unfashionable.

FinnyStory · 25/08/2020 21:19

If you dress fairly formally for work and don't wear heels what do you wear? I don't really care, I wear Clark's flat pumps, that's how much I don't care Grin but they were roundly slated on here a couple of weeks back. I didn't quite get what the alternative was though. I can't wear trainers for work.

MarinaMarinara · 25/08/2020 21:52

Oh no - after reading this I am worried that ALL my outfits are horribly dated now. I’m early 30s but work in quite a traditional sector and my go to work outfit is a tailored dress (below the knee, in a sensible colour, probably navy or black or charcoal) with a nice jacket (maybe a colour, probably collarless and cropped, in either silk or tweed), always tights (10 denier) always heels. Casual home in summer often includes wedge heeled sandals, in winter ankle boots with a heel, jeans, Joules or similar Breton top, nice jumper, gilet.

Basically I only really wear flats if it is for exercise (trainers, wellies, riding boots) or the beach (Birkenstocks). I’ve been barefoot most of lockdown.

In my defence I am quite short. And so heels give me more “presence”. I never wear heels I can’t run in.

Summer23 · 25/08/2020 22:12

@everwork

“But there are reasons behind why you make heels your choice”

Of course, just like anything we choose to wear. I sometimes choose heels because I think they look good with an outfit.

RubyViolet · 25/08/2020 22:23

Went out in Soho last week. An outdoor table at a very nice restaurant, perfect people watching. We actually commented on how the high heel seemed to have completely disappeared.
Maybe if people were clubbing there may have been a few more high heels tottering down Old Compton Street.
Post COVID the glam will return, but l will never wear super high heels again.

Castoreum · 25/08/2020 22:37

I'm 51 and haven't worn heels more than a handful of times in my life. They are uncomfortable and I don't think I look any better in them than not. I wear ballet flats with a posh frock and brogues or boots in the winter. There are plenty of comfortable options that look smart enough. My 13 year old daughter wears trainers pretty much year round for almost every occasion. Good for her, I say.

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 25/08/2020 22:39

Ballet pumps (FitFlop), brogues, loafers, boots, FitFlop Sarita sling backs, FitFlop Cova II sandals (closed toe).
LouisBalfour · 25/08/2020 22:43

Absolutely. Gone are the days when my friends and I tottered around in heels on a night out and crippled our feet in the process.

Now we're all in Vejas, Stan Smiths, DMs and Birkenstocks in the summer. I really love wearing dresses with trainers or DMs.

Wouldn't be seen dead in a ballet flat though.

Egghead68 · 25/08/2020 22:45

I think they’re out of fashion for everyone aren’t they, thank goodness? I hope they don’t return for a good while.

hastingsmua1 · 25/08/2020 22:47

As someone in their early 20s, I agree.

A few years ago, heeled ankle boots were everywhere, in a variety of colours/prints. They’ve definitely been replaced by chunky docs now (with platform styles for height, rather than an actual heel.)

Outside of that, trainers can be worn with everything so other styles of shoe can be redundant outside of work. You’ll also see less people in heels now thanks to the impact of lockdown on normal life. You can get “glam” trainers too, think £500 Balenciaga or Gucci pairs

Heels are still nice for night outs or dressy daytime occasions. I still like wearing jeans with heeled sandals and a nice top for lunch/cocktails for example. Heels can be a faff both when driving or walking/public transport as often you might need a backup pair of flats.

eggerhunter · 25/08/2020 22:59

I liked heels but now can’t wear them because of injuries/
What do people wear in the office? I like to dress in smart trousers ( ankle grazers or similar) and being petite I find a heel looks much smarter. I always feel stumpy wearing flats with dresses, and trainers aren’t appropriate for work!
Advice please!
I’d like boots in the winter but never able to match up the length of trousers with the top of the boot so it either leaves a big gap showing my leg or is not quite long enough to cover the boot!

Pandacub7 · 25/08/2020 23:31

When I was at uni (I’m still in my 20s) we all wore heels on nights out and to events. I still do. I wear 3-4 inch heeled boots everyday during the winter. During the summer I mainly wear trainers on an everyday basis. If you get a good pair of heels then your feet won’t hurt Grin

Pandacub7 · 25/08/2020 23:34

Also, heels are far far more comfortable than flats. I can’t walk in flats, apart from trainers.

worriedwellworrier · 25/08/2020 23:37

They look so dated now. They are the new mum boot, I would never wear them these days.
