Please say I'm right! I think heels are dated weapons of misogyny!

Phew, that feels better:

High heels were in fashion when I was younger, but I never wore them. I had a pair of wedges and a pair with a low, very chunky heel, but I never even tried on a pair of anything higher than that.

Moral of the story: Just because something's fashionable doesn't mean we have to wear it, and even if you care about following fashions, you can still avoid the things you hate or find unflattering on your body type.

Beautiful3 · 25/08/2020 17:04

I think it's amazing how young women wear trainers/flats with dresses, I love it. Years of heel wearing has given me ugly bunions, I wish I'd never worn them.

Freshprincess · 25/08/2020 17:05

I would rarely seen a young woman in heels day to day, but going out out it was definitely still a thing round here in normal times.

I live on the outskirts of a city fairly well known for overdressing though.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 25/08/2020 17:05

Sounds good!

That said, I do like dressing up in heels for an occasion.

everwork · 25/08/2020 17:07

@AntsInPenzance

Aside from the rare instance of corporate dress policy, women wearing heels is entirely their own choice. 99% of men either wouldn't notice or care if a woman wore flats. Most men don't even care what shoes they wear.
Really not true

@OverTheRubicon

What does everyone do who has big feet? I'm quite short and slim (and only 32, so want to dress on the younger side) but with size 7s and I love flats, but when I wear trainers with dresses or loafers with fitted trousers they look like clown shoes..
I have size 7 feet (and I'm quite short) and just wear flat shoes. Who cares if my feet look big? I have massive hands to match, and its just one of those things really.
everwork · 25/08/2020 17:09

@AltogetherAndrews

Haven’t worn heels in over a decade, and wasn’t that big a fan before that.

I think they look very old fashioned, there is a particular look with heels and skinny jeans and a nice top, which always makes me assume the wearer is over 50 at first, no matter what age they turn out to be.

I’m hoping that the younger generation realise what bullshit they are and refuse to engage with shoes you can’t walk in, nails which limit your use of hands, control underwear that limits what you can eat. Men’s clothing tends to be practical, women’s has always been about limiting what women can achieve.

Hear! Hear!

I had to dress smart for the first time in ages last week, for an interview. I threw out all my party heels ages ago but I did keep one lair of "work" heels for just such occasions, although I haven't worn them for work in a very long time. In the end though I decided not to wear them.

There was one other female candidate and she had chosen the heels. I was so glad I hadn't, as the male interviewer stode off in his nice sensible shoes to give us a tour of the premises and she tottered along trying to keep up.

I don't know if, when they were worn more women were better at wearing them or whether because it was the norm I didn't notice so much, but I hate seeing women struggling in their heels.

@Witchcraftandhokum

I do agree that boots and trainers are very on trend now, But....heels are dated weapons of misogyny Fuck off. I love wearing heels, what does that make me?
Why are you swearing at me though? What an over reaction...

I stand by my point entirely. No one, literally no one would wear heels if they weren't going to be seen. Therefore they're worn for someone else's viewing pleasure. Generally, that person is male.

@Yeahnahmum

Dated weapons of misogyny? You do realise that heels were Invented by men FOR MEN, right !? Although a looooong time ago 😅
And guess what? They don't cripple themselves in them now do they?

The struggling is awful to see. Makes women more vulnerable, slow, puts them on the back foot!

I only wear heels occasionally. When I do, I love it. Previous posters have stated that I must wear them for men, for this, for that. Bullshit. I wear them for me.

DeeTractor · 25/08/2020 17:14

I'm 35 and have never worn heels; I am incapable of walking in them and somehow missed that formative period in my teens/twenties where everyone else seemed to learn how to do it while I never got past looking like Bambi on ice.

(And being short of arse and stumpy of leg I could have done with the extra height...)

Summer23 · 25/08/2020 17:16

@everwork - I choose to wear heels to work or occasionally for a night out. Nothing to do with men!

Whatnext2018 · 25/08/2020 17:25

I often went clubbing in the mid 90’s onwards in my Adidas Gazelles as a teen. I can only really remember wearing boots with a bit of a heel for work etc

LadyCatStark · 25/08/2020 17:43

I handy really noticed everyone else not wearing heels, but I haven’t really for years now. I just have different pairs of Vans for different occasions now 😂.

Delatron · 25/08/2020 17:46

I like the dress trainer/pump combination for a night out. I do worry slightly when going to a fancy restaurant though.

I’m having such ‘going out’ outfit angst at the moment. Agree, skinny jeans, heels and a pretty top looks dated (though was easy and used to look good).

Sometimes I don’t want to go out in a dress though. So silk cargo trousers? They need heels to dress them up! But does that look dated? Argh it’s a minefield.

I do like a boot. Spent a lot of last winter in either chunky boots plus dresses or an ankle boot and jeans (though think this is more dated?). Basically if we want to wear jeans out how do we dress these up? Or don’t we?

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/08/2020 17:48

I used to wear heels in my very early teens. Lady Di stiletto (kitten heel ) then went to flats. I do have heels, which I used to wear out. I wore little heels when dd was a baby, shes 12. But it all seems so dated now. I wear smart or scruffy trainers.

Echobelly · 25/08/2020 17:49

Was at a open air bar full of late teens/20 somethings yesterday (not usual for me!) and it was flat boots of chunky trainers all the way with them.

Heels can look great, but they shouldn't feel obligatory. I have a hip problem so can't wear anything spindly or really high, but do wear slight ones for work, except since mid March I haven't been in the office, so quite enjoying no heels whatsoever!

Justme10 · 25/08/2020 17:49

For me it doesn't feel like a going out outfit if I don't have my heels on!
Very occasionally, depending on where I'm going and my outfit I might wear combat boots but trainers are everyday shoes for going to asda or work in my opinion lol!

mylittlesandwich · 25/08/2020 17:54

I am terrible at walking in heels. I tried to wear them when I was 18 and just starting out on nights out but quickly realised that they were pointless. 27 now and I've never really worn them since. The risk of injuring myself is just too high.

everwork · 25/08/2020 18:09
@everwork - I choose to wear heels to work or occasionally for a night out. Nothing to do with men!
But there are reasons behind why you make heels your choice

Thecobwebsarewinning · 25/08/2020 18:14

Both my DD are in their 20s and work in corporate environments. They wear trainers to commute but both have a vast wardrobe of heels lined up under their desks to wear in the office or on client visits. They also wear heels if they are going ‘out out’.

I’m envious. I also wore heels in my younger days but they hurt too much now.

Bluntness100 · 25/08/2020 18:19

I think so yes. My daughter wears brogues to work or flat boots, she’s 23 and works in a corporate environment.

I wear heels with trousers for the office, generally boots, as I prefer it, but in my private life now I am generally in leather trainers, however will wear heeled boots for nights out when the weather gets colder, biker boots for more day to day stuff.
