Please say I'm right! I think heels are dated weapons of misogyny!

Phew, that feels better:

I've seldom been able to wear heels because of how tall I am. Give me trainers, boots or ballerina flats any day of the week.

AryaStarkWolf · 28/08/2020 16:03

Yeah it's great, my daughter always wears converse or vans with dresses or skirts as do most of her friends, it's great to see

I genuinely wonder if I could have achieved more at work and climbed the corporate ladder if my feet hadn't hurt so much, if I hadn't been straggling behind my male colleagues as they marched between offices because my Morton's neuroma was playing up, if I could have concentrated more on their conversation if I wasn't working hard to stay upright (am hypermobile).

I never wore very high heels (simply couldn't walk in them) but corporate footwear (mandatory) in the 00s-10s was not comfortable.

Don't you dare tell me that heels are not a feminist issue.

Heels are so very very much a feminist issue

Taking away women's choice to wear what they want is a feminist issue. That goes for the mandatory heels and also the mandatory 🤢 converse. (I have views on converse. See up thread for details Wink).

I can't wear Converse either (too narrow at the toe for a neuroma).

I don't think it's telling women what to wear but it's an undeniable truth that heels are to make legs look better, largely for the male gaze. Actively choosing to conspire with that is not a choice I would make. I would encourage everyone to think about why they want to participate in patriarchal fetishisation of women in the workplace.

I judge society for making women feel they have to wear heels, not so much the women making the (often limited) choices.

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 28/08/2020 22:29

Converse are murder on one's arches!

I think that some heels are absolutely designed with the Male gaze in mind. Some, but not all, imo. I also truly think my aforementioned London Fly ankle boots with a little wedge are far better for marching about town than Converse or Van's. Also, I'm quite tall already and in my wedge boots I get to tower over people, including a fair number of men. So, mysoginists probably hate me in them. I feel like Brienne of Tarth 🤓💪!

Why did the word "male" capitalise itself on my phone Hmm. I think my phone might be a misogynist...

famousforwrongreason · 29/08/2020 01:56

Ouch. Having insomnia Web browse, just seen pics of Angelina Jolie out last night in a maxi dress with kitten heels. My god, if she can't make them look good then nobody can.
I always blamed my big calves but she's teeny. They look vile. One of the most unflattering heels styles ever.

@WhereTheCrawdadsSing, a Brienne here too

After getting constant slack for my height anyway, I started wearing heels for work (in the 90s, block heels!) and these long wool coats, the whole outfit made me look about 6ft 5 (am 6ft1 without heels)

I loved it

Men often did not like it apart from DH who thought it was super cool

My boss was famous for not having an extra chair in his office, as he liked people to stand whilst he lounged back, to make them "feel their place", but with me he'd offer me his hair and he'd sit on his desk so he could look down on me Grin this always made me feel amused

I still have a week spot for chunky biker boots now, but am happiest in trainers

Still, I loved my heel wearing days as they signalled a time where I was finally ok with my height and stopped feeling self conscious about it, body positivity and all that Smile

But yeah, I don't think I'll ever go back to real heels. I wore some to a party at someone's house a few years ago and the ceiling was just too low Grin (17th century cottage) so had to take them off

He's a good 'un! My DH, I have to say, prefers me not to tower over him, but I know that he likes tall women, so he is a hypocrite! One of his celeb crushes when we were younger, was a female wrestler, (Beth someone or other), who was very tall and obviously, quite muscular. He doesn't argue with my heels anymore tbf, but on our wedding day he was fretting I'd dwarf him in the pics, with my veil and everything on top, so I did wear smaller heels.

Love that about your boss Grin! What an idiot. I'd have worn eight inches platforms, just to spite him Wink.
