And what phone that's for?

I got an amazing deal on black Friday 2 years ago. I got 100GB data, Unlimited calls and texts and the Note 9 for £36 a month.

I'm looking to upgrade now for a similar plan and I'm being quoted around the £55 mark.

So I'm curious what you have and what you pay?

OP posts:

£55 :s iPhone with unlimited data ect

Nottherealslimshady · 25/08/2020 20:39

I bought my phone, £200ish really good samsung. On voxi £10pm 8GB data, unlimited calls and texts, roaming, unlimited social media data. Saved a tonne. Did the same when DHs phone came up for renewal (he would have kept the same phone but he lost it in the woods)

bwfcchick88 · 25/08/2020 20:46

Also on giffgaff here. At the moment, I'm paying £8 a month for 2gb data (working from home & not going out much), but I usually get 6gb for £10 - plus an additional 1gb if I run out. I currently have a Samsung S10e which I bought last year, before that I had an iPhone SE 1st gen. I haven't had a 'proper' contract in years and don't regret it - DH, SIL and my mum are all on giffgaff as well!

RedRiverShore · 25/08/2020 20:49

Tesco mobile here, £9.50 a month, 6gb data, not sure how many calls and texts but more than I will ever use, bought iPhone upfront from JL

TheSmallAssassin · 25/08/2020 21:28

£7.50 here with Tesco SIM only with 1GB data, which I rarely use because most of the time I am at home or work on the WiFi. I bought my phone outright, a Pixel, just before the new model came out.

BlueJava · 25/08/2020 22:01

£10 month on Tesco mobile. No idea what I get in terms of data and calls but have never run out or been charged more.

bruffin · 25/08/2020 22:21

But not being on a contract just seems expensive to me. What's the point of paying £8 for 2gb and pay extra to go over when you can get 4 times that data for the same price

BackforGood · 25/08/2020 22:32

TalkMobile £7.50 a month.
Am staggered by some of these amounts. I can't understand why you would buy a phone on credit.

tiredanddangerous · 25/08/2020 22:36

£40 a month. iPhone 11 with 5GB and unlimited texts and minutes.

Jojoanna · 25/08/2020 22:38

£8.00 a month gift gaff

giffgaff give you extra data on certain goodybags so you don't actually pay more. Personally I prefer to buy a phone outright and have a cheap SIM deal as I tend to keep my phone longer than 2 years. Additionally when I've had contracts in the past, I've always paid over my line rental. Giffgaff is just easier for me as I know exactly what I'm spending.
AbyssusAbyssumInvocat · 25/08/2020 22:40

I have the o2 refresh tariff so I pay for the phone and airtime separately. Phone is £21 but can be paid off at any point. Tariff is 50gb plus unlimited everything £27 and an Apple Watch ⌚️ tariff which is £5. So £53 total. If my maths is correct which it probably isn't.

AbyssusAbyssumInvocat · 25/08/2020 22:40

Oh and that's an Apple XR 128gb

JollyAndBright · 25/08/2020 22:47

Sky mobile, £5 per month for my sim with 20gb of data and unlimited calls and texts.

And my phone Is £20 a month for an iPhone 11.

bruffin · 25/08/2020 22:48

Because if you shop around it can be cheaper.
I paid 23 a month including 4gb data which is 564 +£100 deposit total £664 over 2 years That is for a £750 phone that had been out 6 months and I traded it on this week for £250. So on a contract I got a phone +4gb of data for less than buying it outright.

bruffin · 25/08/2020 22:52

The phone become yours after 2 years anyway, so don't see the point of paying it
out in one go when you effectively have an interest free deal.
Either way £8 for 2gb is way too expensive

Graphista · 25/08/2020 23:04

Interesting thread.

I thought I did well getting an iPhone 7 32gb on contract with Tesco with unltd calls and texts I never leave home (agoraphobic) so don't use data as I am always on homes WiFi and I am paying £26.60 pcm as I got caught out as old phone died suddenly! And I rely on my phone!

I'm hoping this one works for at least 4 years and I can save to buy the next one outright.

I won't buy second hand as had bad experiences in the past buying tech second hand - you've no real comeback if something goes wrong in my experience

But there is a certain phrase I think there's at least a few posters will be interested in learning more about if they don't already know - planned obsolescence

Basically Apple etc DELIBERATELY design their tech to only last Max 2 years so that you'll have to buy again!

It's starting to be outlawed in some countries with some difficulty as of course these are huge, wealthy companies with a lot of clout - but we as consumers as a group also have a lot of clout and we need to use it, I'm just not entirely sure how.

I for one would certainly appreciate any tips from those of you with savvy in this area!

Lollypop4 · 25/08/2020 23:07

Android, newish phone out..unlimited data, calls , text, I also pay the wifi ,house phone and landline through this.
Vodafone, £50pm

Feellikedancingyeah · 25/08/2020 23:10

Bought a phone. Just pay £10 a month for unlimited texts and calls and even with constant use I never run out of mobile data (ID mobile) . I would never get a phone on contract. You end up paying a lot more than the phone is worth !

Thesaltandthesea · 25/08/2020 23:11

£80pcm. Unlimited everything and the latest handset at the time I took it out.

Ginfordinner · 25/08/2020 23:18

I just checked my account. I forgot that I now have 8GB a month for £8.

I used to have GiffGaff, but coverage isn't very good where we live. I had to laugh when I checked DH's account. He has sent 1 text message and spent 5 minutes ringing out on his phone in the last month.

tywysoges · 25/08/2020 23:38

I got the same deal as you, OP, but have the iPhone XR. I needed a phone at the time anyway, and doing the maths: £36 x 24 months = £864 - the phone at the time cost £749, so that would be £115 on the actual minutes, texts and data, which works out at about a fiver a month. I’m not eligible for upgrade yet but my phone is still fine so I’ll only ‘upgrade’ if there’s a good deal on a handset that I can give to DD, otherwise it’ll be SIM only as I don’t actually need the 100Gb data.

TempestHayes · 25/08/2020 23:39

£8 a month, GiffGaff. Just pay as you go.

I'd never do a contract, waaaaay too pricey!

Sarahbeans · 25/08/2020 23:39

Black Friday deal on Mobiles.co.uk (carphone warehouse) two years ago

£30 a month for iPhone XR. Unlimited calls and texts. Not sure how much data it's either 32 or 64gb but it's more than I've ever needed.

Spent about £180 (I think) upfront for handset, but sold old phone which more than covered that cost.

SarahBellam · 25/08/2020 23:45

£40 a month for an XR with 30gb and unlimited calls and texts. The contract is up in December and the phone is still immaculate so I’ll probably get a cheap SIM and keep it for another year or two.
