And what phone that's for?

I got an amazing deal on black Friday 2 years ago. I got 100GB data, Unlimited calls and texts and the Note 9 for £36 a month.

I'm looking to upgrade now for a similar plan and I'm being quoted around the £55 mark.

So I'm curious what you have and what you pay?

I usually buy my phone outright. Pay £20 per month with O2.

Gobbycop · 24/08/2020 13:19

Sim only.

I budget a couple of hundred for a phone every few years.
There's plenty of Chinese brands that are superb at that price point.

I'm on smarty which is unlimited every for £18.50 a month.

bruffin · 24/08/2020 13:19

I was paying £23 a month for an s9 and 4gb of data with vodafone through mobiles direct which finishes next week

I just traded in my S9 for an s20 on the samsung website which will cost me about £20 a month for 2 years then maybe 8gb for £8 on EE sim only

Roomba · 24/08/2020 13:19

I bought my phone outright (under £150 so may not be an option for you if you want something fancier). Just pay £10 a month to giffgaff, which I've dropped down to £8 during lockdown as I'm not out enough to need loads of data. I've previously bought almost new phones from CEX and saved a fortune.

I can't imagine paying £100 a month! Even my sister who has to have the latest iPhone, doesn't have a landline so uses loads of data and got a free ipad as a sweetener with her contract, only pays about £50 a month.

BammBamm · 24/08/2020 13:20

£26 a month for new iPhone SE with unlimited texts, calls and 30GB of data.

RevolutionRadio · 24/08/2020 13:21

£10 a month SIM only.

I bought a phone for about £170. It does everything I need in a phone and hopefully it will last year's.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/08/2020 14:42

I always upgrade after 2 years

When I gave my IPhone 6 to DH after I got my upgrade it lasted 3 months before dying and Apple saying they're only supposed to last 2 ish years

I've got an IPhone 3 from 12 years ago and it still bloody works but the new ones are shit!!!

I will be upgrading again (mines a 10) and trying once again to give my old one to DH - no doubt it will pack up after a few months Hmm

lifesalongsong · 24/08/2020 18:48

@negomi90

£20 a month - sim only and I've been with my phone provider a long time (so they give me nice deals when I threaten to leave. 100 Gb a month, unlimited texts and calls. I don't have wifi/other internet so the data is used up being a hotspot for my laptop.
That's not that great a deal, you can get unlimited data for less that that a month, coverage issues aside I don't see the point of loyalty to a SIM only provider when cheaper deals come up pretty much all the time.

You are very much in a minority @Emcont paying huge monthly amounts for handset contracts nowadays.

ShakeaHettyFeather · 24/08/2020 19:10

Another Giffgaff £8 a month, though if for some reason I have to use less WiFi and more.data it's an extra couple quid that month. £140 for the phone back in February - Motorola.

I upgrade when the battery life gets shit, defined as a charge overnight won't last until evening. Wouldn't second-hand phones generally have that problem? Presumably refurbs get a new battery.

Eliphanbee · 24/08/2020 19:18

I buy second hand phone from Ebay (currently s8 plus, which was around 150) I pay around 11 per month, for 8gb and unlimited minutes and texts..I think it is though a loyalty discount (three)

ILoveFood87 · 24/08/2020 20:19

Mines £15 for a Samsung something or other with lots of data and unlimited calls and texts. My sons got the samsung galaxy note 10 plus and our phones do the same thing apart from his obvs has the stylus or howether you spell it

CorianderLord · 24/08/2020 21:04

£36 a month iPhone 8 unlimited everything.

I got an iphone11 though (bought) and still use the contract but will switch to sim only in jan

Market2Barga1n · 25/08/2020 14:19

Bought own phone a couple of years ago
£18 month calls, text, data

Going down to zero per month, on a new deal with another supplier

ilikebooksandplants · 25/08/2020 14:22

I pay £74 pm for an iPhone XS - I get 40GB of data and unlimited calls and texts. I think I pay too much though, and I am looking forward to switching to a sim only deal at Christmas, unless I am stupidly tempted to upgrade (which I probably will be, because I am ridiculous).

Flatpackback · 25/08/2020 14:25

I bought my phone & use Giffgaff. You can change what you buy each month, it'ss very flexible. If I'm away & know I'm going to be using loads of data I can buy an unlimited bag for that month only. When I'm mainly home & using house WiFi, I get either the £6 or £10 package.

FaffingForEngland · 25/08/2020 14:45

The upgrades on phones these days are so much less dramatic than they used to be, sometimes there's virtually no difference with a new phone.

I think the model of upgrading every year or 2 at a hefty monthly cost is beginning to to look very outdated.

bruffin · 25/08/2020 16:02

I bought my phone & use Giffgaff. You can change what you buy each month, i
I dont get the obsession with giffgaff, it looks very expensive to me. I just bought an 8gb for £8 a month from O2, which is way more than i need so when im away it will be ok. On giffgaff for £8 i would only get 2gb, which wouldnt be enough. Before lockdown i averaged about 3gb. I was paying £23 for an s9 and 4gb of data until this week, Ive traded in my s9 for an s20 direct with samsung, interest free for 2 years , so with the o2 sim i will be paying £28 a month. Giffgaff are asking £50 a month for the same!
I always go through mobiles.co.uk or uswitch for deals

shas19 · 25/08/2020 16:04

£57, Vodafone absolutely ridiculous.

OublietteBravo · 25/08/2020 16:08

£8 per month for unlimited texts/calls and 10GB of data (sim only - I bought my own phone).

DinosApple · 25/08/2020 16:12

Family sim only deal BT- 2 sims:
£7.50/ month, free texts, free minutes and 6gb data per Sim.

I've got a Motorola G8 Power, DD has my old Moto G5S. Both were outright purchases.
DDs friends (11) have told her iPhones are the best, fortunately she doesn't care.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/08/2020 16:14

£5.40 a month, Plusnet.

Phone is about 4 years old and I run my business on it!

I think it has 2G of data. I don't get anywhere near it, even in the remote areas I often work in there is enough wifi coverage!

Noneformethanks · 25/08/2020 16:27

@bruffin I use giffgaff because there’s no contract. I can vary it every month depending on what I’ll need.

I could literally stop when my month runs out and go somewhere else.

DoraDont · 25/08/2020 16:27

Bought my iPhone outright and spend £12 a month on giffgaff for 10GB and unlimited calls and texts.

Haven't had a contract for years and would never have one again.

Flatpackback · 25/08/2020 19:37

@bruffin the Giffgaff unlimited, always on bag is £25 . What are they quoting for £50? Just curious or maybe I've misunderstood.

girlicorne · 25/08/2020 19:47

DDs is £100 a month for an iPhone XS contract started last August. I was completely had there, did nt read there was a handset charge as well as the airtime charge and now I can’t get out of it for another year. She has unlimited everything with that. DS has an iPhone 11 just after they first came out, his is £45 a month with unlimited everything. I have DDs old phone when she gets an upgrade and I m fine with that I currently have an iPhone 8 which meets my needs fine. Before that I had a galaxy s3 bought outright in 2012 when they first came out and that did me til last summer! I pay Vodafone £20 a month PAYG and get unlimited calls and texts and more than enough data with that. I d say £50 was reasonable for a decent phone with lots of calls, texts and data.
