And what phone that's for?

I got an amazing deal on black Friday 2 years ago. I got 100GB data, Unlimited calls and texts and the Note 9 for £36 a month.

I'm looking to upgrade now for a similar plan and I'm being quoted around the £55 mark.

So I'm curious what you have and what you pay?

£26 a month with O2 for unlimited minutes and texts and 8GB of data. The phone included in the plan is a 64GB IPhone 8.

FizzyPink · 24/08/2020 10:46

Also for anyone else thinking of switching to Sim only, there are some really good cash back deals on Quidco

BarbaraofSeville · 24/08/2020 10:48

When the contract expires next month I’ll just get a sim only deal. DP is appalled I wouldn’t upgrade to the latest model but what’s the point

Indeed. If you keep your old phone for another two years and pay £5 for a sim only contract that will suit your needs, that's around ONE THOUSAND POUNDS that you'll save in that time period. That would buy you a rather nice holiday.

Maybe do that. Keep your phone and in 2 years time, book yourself a week in a 5* AI spa hotel somewhere sunny and leave your DP at home with his latest model iPhone Smile.

Or you could pay off debt, overpay the mortgage or put the money into a pension, or do all manner of things that would benefit you more than upgrading to the latest phone every 2 years.

The holiday suggestion was a flippant one, but a lot of the time, what people spend on things like phones goes a long way to explaining why some people never have any money and others do, despite having similar incomes.

Obviously there's some people who don't have enough money for the basics, and some who have enough money for anything they could ever want, but most people are in the middle and have to make choices and to me it seems like a no brainer to spend not very much on a phone, because you can get a decent phone and sim only service for an average cost of £10-15 pm, leaving more money available for other things.

£21 per month for 100gb of data as I stream loads and the kids tether when we’re not at home. I have an iPhone 11 Pro which I purchased outright.

I have been buying my phones outright and doing SIM only for about 7/8 years now and found it far cheaper than a phone contract but I appreciate the initial outlay may not be realistic for everyone, especially for the more expensive models.

vickibee · 24/08/2020 10:57

SIM only with SKY Mobile who use O2 network -£8 per month for 8Gb and Unlimited calls and texts. Very good value
My Dh pays £16 per month to EE for only 4GB

FizzyPink · 24/08/2020 11:18

That’s a great way of looking at it @BarbaraofSeville
We’re saving to buy a house next year so that extra money would be extremely useful as well as having lower outgoings each month

Fyzz · 24/08/2020 11:25

That's a staggering amount of money to pay for a phone. I could afford it but it seems such a waste of money.
Like many others on here I pay £6 a month on giffgaff and buy a phone.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 24/08/2020 11:26

I bought my phone. Contract with Three for 10gb data, unlimited calls, unlimited texts for £9 a month

dwsf · 24/08/2020 11:27

I got a galaxy s10 from giffgaff sim free for £32 per month which is now paid off, I get the £10 goodbag which they have recently changed to something called a gold googdybag, I get 10g of data, unlimited texts and calls.

Shizzlestix · 24/08/2020 11:28

Car phone warehouse man told me to get a free Tesco sim and swap it a day later for another sim, I’d be paying about £13 a month for unlimited everything, but I want ease and Spotify, so am paying £24 for unlimited calls/texts/European roaming/10gb of data.

Belindabelle · 24/08/2020 11:31

For those who maybe don't have the money to buy a new phone outright look at CEX, Music Magpie etc.

I bought DS a refurbished iPhone from there, DH was so impressed with the saving that he did the same and saved hundreds on the phone he had been eying up. Both phones looked brand new and came boxed.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/08/2020 11:37

£57 a month on O2 for a 256gb iPhone 11 Pro with 5gb of data which is more than enough for me. I also pay £19.50 a month for my Apple Watch.

LakieLady · 24/08/2020 11:38

I've had this with clients. They don't understand why they're skint, and when I go through their outgoings they're spending £120 a month for 2 iPhone contracts and £80-odd for Sky ...

cologne4711 · 24/08/2020 11:43

£10 a month with Giffgaff for ds (not a "contract" as such but I have a regular arrangement so it may as well be) and DH and I are with 02 on SIM-only contracts and they are around £25 a month, so £35 a month for the three of us.

NoWordForFluffy · 24/08/2020 11:49

Another SIM-only here. £8pm for 9GB data with Vodafone.

LunaLoveFood · 24/08/2020 11:54

Mine is sim only and is £13 for unlike text and calls and 4gb data.

Nottobesoldseparately · 24/08/2020 12:00

SIM only on 3

My phone is an oĺd Samsung galaxy which is about 4 years old now, is in pristine condition and still gets updates.

It's £10 A month, unlimited calls and texts and I think 10gb of data which i don't ever use.

Potterpotterpotter · 24/08/2020 12:02

£62 a month.
iPhone 11 Pro Max
Unlimited calls/minutes and 100gb data
I paid nothing for the phone
Apple Music free for a year

Chasingsquirrels · 24/08/2020 12:24

SIM only on a 3yo Samsung (I buy a new phone separately).
£6pm for unlimited texts & calls and 4mg of data which I don't get near using.

Chasingsquirrels · 24/08/2020 12:25

@Chasingsquirrels

SIM only on a 3yo Samsung (I buy a new phone separately). £6pm for unlimited texts & calls and 4mg of data which I don't get near using.
4gb of data I meant!
Vivi0 · 24/08/2020 12:41

I am £100 per month!

I feel like such a fool!

GoGadgetGo · 24/08/2020 13:09

£20 unlimited calls,text and data.

Tether the data from phone to smart tv and laptop so don't have to pay any broadband internet costs. Perfect for me.

DieSchottin93 · 24/08/2020 13:13

Sim only plan with Three. For £10.27 a month I get 12GB of data and unlimited calls and texts.

chipsandpeas · 24/08/2020 13:14

sim only 20quid a month on 3 - unlimited calls, data, texts - phone was bought outright

TankGirl97 · 24/08/2020 13:15

I bought a swanky phone on Black Friday and pay SIM only £9 per month with 3. Never remotely near my data limit or anything.
Hopefully the phone will last several years but overall it works out a fair bit cheaper than an 18m contract would have been anyway.
