To report this dance studio?

Would I be being unreasonable to report a dance studio to Walt Disney Studios UK as in the past and currently they have /are using various Walt Disney Studios flims as themes for school holiday dance camps and performances and are using songs from the films in performances. They have posted on social media advertising using Disney flims as themes for the dance camps and posting videos of performances to music from Disney films.

This is bullshit, right? Nobody would be this fucking petty in real life?

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 09/08/2020 18:18

@DontBeShelfish

This is the wonderful online world of Mums Net so don't always assume normality. Some love to be entitled, antagonist and always super sensitive (to offence when none intended) with an agenda to feel entitled.

Most mums here are lovely and reasonable but there are some "angry bird" types sometimes.

unfortunateevents · 09/08/2020 18:29

Please come back and explain how your "friend" knows that the dance studio have not perfectly legitimately paid for a licence to use the Disney music and songs?

VettiyaIruken · 09/08/2020 18:35

Why would your friend want to report a group her child enjoys going to? That's kind of weird. Not to mention mean when there's a chance Disney could give the group a kick up the arse. Why would she want to do anything that potentially caused the group to fold?

I think Disney will survive never knowing some kids are having some fun with their stuff.

I would say they won't care but they are really aggressive on this issue.

alfagirl73 · 09/08/2020 18:43

The performing arts world is currently on its knees due to Covid - I hardly think they need this kind of nonsense thrown at them!

Honestly - I bet you grassed up people who taped the Top 40 off the radio back in the day!

Get a grip... and a life... and let the kids enjoy their show!

DrCoconut · 09/08/2020 18:53

I seem to remember a similar issue involving Queen songs and on hearing about it Brian May basically said so what, if the kids are getting involved in something good and having fun leave it alone, it's not like we (ie surviving members) are going to starve for want of a few quid in royalties.

Are you the same knob head who reported Alder Hey hospital a few years ago for having a Disney picture on the wall?

This is a piss take surely? No one really gives a shit about the actual intellectual copywrite of a company that much?!

WTF, really? Missed that one if so. Why would anyone do that Sad

heartsonacake · 09/08/2020 19:29

Why would you want to? What issue do you have with this exactly?

midsomermurderess · 09/08/2020 21:27

ultrablue 😁👍

Fishfingersandwichplease · 09/08/2020 21:45

Why would you? Honestly wouldn't even give this a second thought.

DontBeShelfish · 09/08/2020 22:16

@ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia I've been on here a few years but never cease to be amazed by the mad stuff that people get wound up by. Nowt so queer as folk, is there? 😂

DontBeShelfish · 09/08/2020 22:17

@ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia By the way, just out of sheer curiosity - solicitor? Or barrister?

PercyKirke · 09/08/2020 22:20

The only grounds for doing this would be if you were a Disney shareholder. Breach of copyright is a civil, not criminal offence.

AriettyHomily · 09/08/2020 22:24

My kids have been doing Descendants all week at their dance club on zoom. Didn't even cross my mind about copyright.

I think Disney will cope without royalties from 100 kids learning to sing and dance .the dance school probably couldn't survive if they had to seek copyright approval.

Some things are worth getting worked up about. This isn't one of them.

Katjolo · 09/08/2020 22:27

This is clearly a wind up. Ridiculous!

dancinfeet · 09/08/2020 22:51

yeah do it. You're an asshole. from a dance teacher xx

masterblaster · 09/08/2020 22:56

Did they use sleeping beauty, beauty and the beast, Snow White, Robin Hood, or any other of the innumerable other folk tales that Disney took and then made non public domain?

masterblaster · 09/08/2020 23:01

@plunkplunkfizz

“My friend” thinks “Your friend” is being a busybody.

Find it highly unlikely “Your friend” wants to dob in her own child’s dance studio.

My girlfriend also thinks your friend is a busybody, but you won't know her, she goes to a different school.
VictoriousSockPuppet · 09/08/2020 23:07

You definitely should. Disney as a brand and a company are desperately struggling, whereas small independents are thriving.
Oh, hang on....

Witchend · 09/08/2020 23:09

Disney's really mean about copyright. I understand about protecting their brand but they are really heavy about it, even for small things. Having organised performances I'm always careful not to use Disney for that reason, which is a pity as they do have perfect songs for children's musicals.
A couple of years ago they withdrew permission from the local panto with less than a week to go, for all their songs they were using, causing obvious issues.

I would think that they could use it as publicity. State that any song has to be credited in the programme with which show it's from and people might think "nice song, wonder about the other songs, let's go and see it."

So leave it.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 10/08/2020 00:41

From a long term dance mom to your ‘friend’. Oh FFS, get a life. And maybe consider withdrawing her children from the studio instead.
