To ask why my colleague has been off sick for weeks and is on the beach?

waitandseee · 27/07/2020 19:43

My colleague has had nearly a month off sick leave, yet on facebook, there are photos of her on the beach, and on days out at cafe's. She is paddling in the sea, looking happy and very healthy. Am I being unreasonable to ask why this being allowed by management?

It’s not your business...

Sirzy · 27/07/2020 19:46

You know nothing about her health conditions. Now if she was claiming to have something infectious then fair enough but there are plenty of reasons you can’t work but you can still go for some fresh air.

The fact the first thought you had was about bubbling your colleague rather than being pleased she was having a good day shows she isn’t a friend so delete her from social media and get on with your life

Flynn999 · 27/07/2020 19:46

Could be stress related could be something serious and she’s ‘getting out for the sake of her mental health’ not everyone of sick is confined to bed. Might be taking the complete piss but unless you know what’s wrong it’s not your place to judge.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 27/07/2020 19:46

Yes YABU. Their sickness and the details of it are private. Maybe it’s depression and they’re trying to rebuild their mood / anxiety. Maybe it’s for some other illness and they’re taking some days out during treatment.

Point is, it doesn’t matter why they’re off work.

Todaythiscouldbe · 27/07/2020 19:46

Totally unreasonable
You, presumably, have no idea why she is off sick.

ssd · 27/07/2020 19:46

Cos she's ripping the piss out you all.

NeverTwerkNaked · 27/07/2020 19:47

YABU. When I was signed off sick with stress the doctor specifically told me to go out side and exercise and see friends.

InfiniteSheldon · 27/07/2020 19:47

Only on Mn would she be in the right and you unreasonable she's a cf

Burnthurst187 · 27/07/2020 19:48

If you can't beat them join them

Biancadelrioisback · 27/07/2020 19:48

Not your place to ask

UnaCorda · 27/07/2020 19:49

Presumably it's something related to mental health. If she's claiming otherwise, she's pretty daft to advertise her holiday on facebook.

I think you would be unreasonable to start asking questions, unless perhaps her absence is directly affecting your work.

As for "looking happy", smiling briefly for a photograph does not prove anything.

heartsonacake · 27/07/2020 19:49

YABU. It’s none of your business; you don’t know why she’s off sick and you’re not entitled to know. She doesn’t have to justify herself to you and management don’t need to justify her being off to you either.

KeyWorker · 27/07/2020 19:49

YABU to ask and YABU to think it’s any of your business.

CatBatCat · 27/07/2020 19:49

Mind you're own business

CatBatCat · 27/07/2020 19:49

*your

Sorry

Galaxycat · 27/07/2020 19:50

@waitandseee well you could ask why, but it would be none of your business.

You’ll actually find that the longer someone is off the more likely they’ll be out and about doing things.
For example, short term off with cold or the flu - likely to be at home, shouldn’t really be out and about.

Long term off with back condition, cancer diagnosis, heart problem, mental health diagnosis - more likely to try and live a normal life but might not be able to come to work at that moment.

bloodywhitecat · 27/07/2020 19:51

It's between her, her doctor(s) and her manager, it is nothing to do with you. My DP is off sick because he has just been diagnosed with cancer, at the moment he is well enough to be out and about but that will soon change, want to judge him too? Another friend who was off sick had had an ectopic pregnancy, should she've stayed holed up in bed?

Nixen · 27/07/2020 19:51

She could have depression. She could be dying of cancer. Keep your bitterness to yourself

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 27/07/2020 19:51

I'm off sick just now too, I will be for months.

I need an operation, I cannot work until I get it.

I can still go about my daily life though.

None of your business.

Chloemol · 27/07/2020 19:51

All you can do is flag it with her manager if you are that concerned and then leave it

You don’t have the right to know why she is off work

ParcelFarce · 27/07/2020 19:51

YWBU to raise this with management, yes, bc it’s none of your business and you don’t know the details of her situation. However, she is a fuckwit to post photos like that for all to see whilst signed off sick!

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 27/07/2020 19:53

She might have depression. Can i suggest you remove your nose from her business.

Elouera · 27/07/2020 19:54

Maybe she'd already booked this time off as annual leave?
Maybe she just had a miscarriage and was off with complications beforehand?
Maybe mental health?

VeeDubber · 27/07/2020 19:54

I clicked on this thread just knowing you'd be having your arse handed to you.

Meanwhile back in the real world, most people who are off sick from work for whatever reason, are not stupid enough to go advertising on social media that they're having a fine old time while their colleagues bust their balls covering the workload.

But the best thing you can do is delete her off your social media and try not to think about it.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 27/07/2020 19:55

Cos she is a cheeky mare
Basically
Do you dislike her ? Not accusatory just curious Wink
