Would you be happy with the finding of this cake for £80

I ordered a graduation cake from a lady who I have used for years and all of the cakes have been beautiful which is why I've returned every time. However I picked up this yesterday and I'm a little disappointed in the size and finish compared to the picture I sent of how I would like it. I've messaged her to tell her I was a little disappointed with it but she hasn't replied so am I being unreasonable? She wasn't in when I picked it up she left it with her teen son to hand over so couldn't really say anything there and then.

Here's how it was supposed to look.

Does she usually charge £80? There's a girl round here who would do that for £45

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 26/07/2020 11:02

Yes I would - but I don't buy special order cakes so I've no idea how much they cost.

rookiemere · 26/07/2020 11:02

For £80 it looks very amateurish. I wouldn't be happy OP.

Daisychains20 · 26/07/2020 11:03

What picture did you send over?

EnoughAlready2020 · 26/07/2020 11:03

I would complain. You haven't posted a picture of your whole cake but it's pretty substandard especially for £80!! It's not very insta-worthy!! xx

Daisychains20 · 26/07/2020 11:03

Sorry cross post with you picture. I wouldn’t be happy no.

piscean10 · 26/07/2020 11:03

Yanbu. it looks so untidy and not like the picture at all. Doesnt look professional for 80. I would be quite upset with this actually.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 26/07/2020 11:04

As in - "Yes, I'd be unhappy with it but I don't have any experience of the finish you get because I've never ordered one."

paddingtonbearsmarmalade · 26/07/2020 11:04

I hobby-bake and my finish is better than that Confused if you’ve used her loads I’d probably think it’s a one off but think you’re right to say something to her. It’s possible (unlikely but you never know) that the son messed about with it after she left which affected the finish?

Shizzlestix · 26/07/2020 11:04

Very poor finish, I wouldn’t be happy.

dementedpixie · 26/07/2020 11:05

Can't really get an idea of size from those pictures but the icing finish isn't great

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 26/07/2020 11:05

Did the teenage son ice it as well?

Spied · 26/07/2020 11:06

Very poor finish and looks like she's tried to rush it.
It doesn't look like an £80 cake although I know this woman has to buy ingredients etc.
No time has gone into it.
She should value your custom but probably thinks because you've had stuff from her before and been happy she could rush this and you'd not be too particular.

squiggleirl · 26/07/2020 11:06

Not a very appetising shade of pink, is it?

I think the cake you got is not that great for £80. At a minimum, the finish should be sharper.

However, I don't think somebody would create the cake you asked for for £80 either.

LMW1990 · 26/07/2020 11:08

As above I am an enthusiastic amateur when it comes to baking cakes. I bake for friends, family, work colleagues etc. I charge less than half of what you have paid (for friends of friends etc) as I recognise that I am not a professional, but I need to cover costs. I'd say I could made a better effort with a better finish

3cats · 26/07/2020 11:09

I agree that maybe she’s away somewhere for some reason and got her son to do it. Hopefully she will apologize and give you a discount.

NoSquirrels · 26/07/2020 11:10

Would you usually have had royal icing cakes from her? Perhaps she’s just not great with that type of finish. I dunno - I’d never pay £80 for a cake so I’m no help.

purplecorkheart · 26/07/2020 11:10

The finishing is poor. Looks like a very rushed job.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 26/07/2020 11:11

No - I'd be unhappy.

It looks very amateurish.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/07/2020 11:13

No matter what the charge, that is a really poor finish!

£45 would be a great undersell, anyone charging that much would be losing money on every single cake!

But that's the trouble with hobbyists, I suppose!

LakieLady · 26/07/2020 11:16

A colleague of mine does better cakes than that for the cost of ingredients.

Maybe she should give up the day job and do cakes f/t.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/07/2020 11:22

I'd be disappointed in paying for that. That's 'enthusiastic parent' rather than selling level.

forfoxsakee · 26/07/2020 11:28

She is a professional, she used to have a shop and has won awards that's why I'm so confused 😐

Strange choice of colours...?
The sludgy ''pink'' doesn't go well with the brown, looks like two totally different makers, comparing the pics?

Saw a plasterer rendering a neighbour's house a few weeks ago..his finish was immaculate..I'd bet he could ice cakes to perfection Smile
