Would you be happy with the finding of this cake for £80

I ordered a graduation cake from a lady who I have used for years and all of the cakes have been beautiful which is why I've returned every time. However I picked up this yesterday and I'm a little disappointed in the size and finish compared to the picture I sent of how I would like it. I've messaged her to tell her I was a little disappointed with it but she hasn't replied so am I being unreasonable? She wasn't in when I picked it up she left it with her teen son to hand over so couldn't really say anything there and then.

I’ve seen lots of cakes iced in this style (I’ve attached a photo of this messy icing style) so when I first saw the photo I thought it was a recent fashion thing. Saying that, the frosting colour is really grim, the numbers are oversized and, again, a really unappetising colour and £80 is such a lot of money for a basic cake with a bit of icing and some flowers stuck on top.
I’d definitely send her a message and

Thisismytimetoshine · 26/07/2020 11:58

No, it looks a bit shit.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 26/07/2020 11:58

... let her know I wasn’t happy.

I hope it at least tastes good!

CtrlU · 26/07/2020 12:04

I would not have paid £80 for that.

I’m even unsure why you took the cake and left the money when you saw it honestly. I know she wasn’t there but I would not have accepted that and I would certainly not have paid if I wasn’t happy.

I think she knows it’s a shabby job. That’s why she left it with her son and made sure she wouldn’t be in when you arrived so you couldn’t say anything to her

TrickyKid · 26/07/2020 12:07

Maybe she is training someone and they made it!? It doesn't look professional.

lanbro · 26/07/2020 12:08

Not good, I would've charged £45 for that and it would have been a lot better, if I di say so myself!

howfarwevecome · 26/07/2020 12:09

If she used to run a professional cake business, she should know better. The finish on that cake is not professional and quite sloppy. I would complain.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 26/07/2020 12:09

That’s a poor finish for a pricey cake. I don’t have much love for the design, but it’s not been well executed.

Violetroselily · 26/07/2020 12:11

Like some PP have said, I reckon she has had someone else do it. It really does look very amateurish.

MahaMoon · 26/07/2020 12:14

I agree. I wouldn’t be happy with that at all. I could do a better job than that and I’m far from professional.

Do you have a picture from a bit further away so we can see the whole cake?

Tbh, everything about it is wrong. The pink colour’s awful, the numbers way too big, the icing finish looks messy.

Whatthebloodyell · 26/07/2020 12:16

Looks pants. I quite like the messy icing style but it has to look intentional and that’s doesn’t.

Notsurewhatsgoingon · 26/07/2020 12:17

No way I'd pay £80 for that.

Dennysheart · 26/07/2020 12:18

No way! Very expensive for an incredibly poor finish. I wouldn’t be happy at all.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/07/2020 12:20

There’s no way I’d be happy paying £80 for that.

The way that flower on the first picture is just stuck and not even placed in the icing. That looks like the work of a 3 year old.
Plus it’s not even smoothed over.

Wilburgh · 26/07/2020 12:22

Wow, even I do better icing cakes for my children.
I would be really disappointed.

TheVanguardSix · 26/07/2020 12:23

Oh dear. That's daylight robbery.

CherryPavlova · 26/07/2020 12:25

I’d check out her awards - it’s very poor quality but may be delicious.

GreyGardens88 · 26/07/2020 12:25

I wouldn't complain, just wouldn't use her again

GabsAlot · 26/07/2020 12:26

if youve used her before i would say something-obviously something has gone wrong

RandomMess · 26/07/2020 12:27

I would wonder if she had an apprentice/outsourced the work...

Happynow001 · 26/07/2020 12:27

@GreyGardens88

I wouldn't complain, just wouldn't use her again
I'm afraid I would complain if I'd ordered an professionally made cake from someone with a good reputation and I received this.

If she's not responding OP, maybe consider stating your disappointment in a review.

dancingthroughthedark · 26/07/2020 12:31

It looks like it got dropped and someone patched it up. Do you have a picture of anything she has made for you previously that shows her normal standard?

RJnomore1 · 26/07/2020 12:32

I think it’s been knocked as well.

I don’t think the colours/scale worked to what you wanted in the first place either.

I think you need to get in touch to say you didn’t think it’s up to her usual standards.

piefacedClique · 26/07/2020 12:33

Is it worth getting in touch with her and asking her to re-ice the cake.... let her know it’s not the usual standard and give the opportunity to make it right. that’s a poor quality finish for a professional.

LizzieBennett70 · 26/07/2020 12:33

Jesus. Did you look at it before you took it? I'd have refused to take it.

If it looks that bad, what the hell is it going to taste like Shock
