Would you be happy with the finding of this cake for £80

I ordered a graduation cake from a lady who I have used for years and all of the cakes have been beautiful which is why I've returned every time. However I picked up this yesterday and I'm a little disappointed in the size and finish compared to the picture I sent of how I would like it. I've messaged her to tell her I was a little disappointed with it but she hasn't replied so am I being unreasonable? She wasn't in when I picked it up she left it with her teen son to hand over so couldn't really say anything there and then.

Are the flowers icing or real.
Look the finish isn't great but realistically flowers take a long time to make.

billy1966 · 26/07/2020 11:37

Looks like something an ordinary home baker would make.

I would be very seriously unimpressed for £80🙄

Kazplus2 · 26/07/2020 11:39

Can you take a photo of your cake at the same angle as the one that you wanted and post them to her side by side, highlighting how different the one she has produced, and list each area where it differs. Have you paid already. I think you need to offer her the opportunity to tidy it up and then provide a bit of discount as good will. I agree with other posters that due to the angles of the photos you have taken it's difficult to compare tho.

Floralnomad · 26/07/2020 11:40

I would be very disappointed paying £80 for that , it looks very amateur .

Arrivederla · 26/07/2020 11:40

The finish isn't great and that particular shade of pink is horrible.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 26/07/2020 11:41

It’s possible (unlikely but you never know) that the son messed about with it after she left which affected the finish?

Unlikely I'd think - the scale of the size of the numbers relative to the cake is wrong and that icing finish isn't at all smooth.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/07/2020 11:44

She is a professional, she used to have a shop and has won awards

In that case it looks as if something cropped up and she asked someone else to "help her out" - there's simply no way a professional would turn out a mess like that

No wonder she left het teen to hand it over to you Hmm

HazelBite · 26/07/2020 11:45

D'you know what I think has happened, she has gone off somewhere left son to pass it on to you and something has dropped/ landed on/knocked it whilst she wasn't there and someone has done a bit of a repair job on it (possibly the son)
All the worst "bits" are on one side. If she is a professional and you've never had problems before I would imagine this could have been what happened, and why the finish is lacking.

alfrew · 26/07/2020 11:46

No professional in their right mind would say they'd made that.

She's either unwell, or delegated to someone else.

RatInADollhouse · 26/07/2020 11:48

OP would you mind posting a pic of the cake that shows the size? It is impossible to tell from the icing pics. Also did you tell the baker how many people the cake needed to feed?

Immigrantsong · 26/07/2020 11:48

OP I think everyone agrees it's sub par. I would ask for a partial refund or a new one if time allows it.

YouAndMeAndTheDevilMakesThree · 26/07/2020 11:48

I'd be unimpressed with that for 80 quid.

Mind you for 80 quid I'd be a bit underwhelmed by the one in the promo photo as well, unless it's massive?

Dogsaresomucheasier · 26/07/2020 11:49

Another vote for son has knocked it/attempted a repair. No, that’s not a £80 cake. Send her the photos.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/07/2020 11:49

Looks like they forgot the "I" in "Congratulations" and has to shoe-horn it in.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 26/07/2020 11:50

Perhaps her teen son made it?

Cotswolds10 · 26/07/2020 11:51

Even by London standards that’s very expensive for the size. And as a PP said, I am a hobby baker and could finish it much more neatly than that. A sharp finish takes no time at all for professionals. What did you say to her when you messaged?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 26/07/2020 11:51

I have to say that I wouldn't be happy with that finish either, for £80. I know it's not a huge amount in cake terms, but it's enough that you'd expect a better finish than that!

So yes, I'd say that something hasn't gone quite as planned - whether a botched repair by the son, or she has an apprentice whose first job it was, or what.

Did it at least taste good? But yes, I'd probably hope for a few quid knocked off the price for that.

Ishihtzuknot · 26/07/2020 11:52

I wouldn’t be happy either, £80 is a lot for a cake so you’d expect the proper standards, it looks rushed with no care or thought put into it. It hasn’t been finished properly and the spread marks are very noticeable. I’d request a partial refund and try to smooth it out myself.

BranchAndPoppy · 26/07/2020 11:52

I wouldn't be happy with that either op. It is hard to see the size though in the pics. Is it quite short compared to the pic? How many is is supposed to serve?

OohKittens · 26/07/2020 11:53

Good grief £80 no blinkin way

InsertHilariousUserName · 26/07/2020 11:53

YANBU that is awful for a professional cake

warbies92 · 26/07/2020 11:53

Can’t really tell without a full comparison photo.

AlwaysCheddar · 26/07/2020 11:54

No way! Complain! That looks homemade - the icing.

eggsandwich · 26/07/2020 11:54

Looks like she’s done it in a rush, I wouldn’t be happy to pay £80 for that.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 26/07/2020 11:56

Who's picture is the second one? Did you send it to her or did she have it as an example? Either way I think it's not the quality you'd expect for the price
