Would you be happy with the finding of this cake for £80

I ordered a graduation cake from a lady who I have used for years and all of the cakes have been beautiful which is why I've returned every time. However I picked up this yesterday and I'm a little disappointed in the size and finish compared to the picture I sent of how I would like it. I've messaged her to tell her I was a little disappointed with it but she hasn't replied so am I being unreasonable? She wasn't in when I picked it up she left it with her teen son to hand over so couldn't really say anything there and then.

@Boomerwang what did you do?!

DancingInDespair · 26/07/2020 13:14

It's not awful, but it's not worth £80, so no, I wouldn't be happy.

ATaleOfTwoCovids · 26/07/2020 13:15

Looks like it was decorated by a drunk person. I’m not even remotely professional (I literally make two cakes a year for DCs birthdays) and even I can ice a cake properly with straight clean edges. It’s not exactly difficult, and that design is so basic it’s essentially just a crumb coat and plain coat with a few hits stuck on. A child could do that with some guidance and the right tools.

Tattoocrazymum · 26/07/2020 13:17

I would be really unimpressed.

Why did you not just refuse to take it, i would have said to her son im sorry but i can not accept that - please tell her i will message her later to explain.

VenusTiger · 26/07/2020 13:19

I've recently seen many kids cakes on SM that look like this @forfoxsakee it seems to be a modern rustic look - is it buttercream? have you actually sent her a photo of it, just in case it's been dropped and "fixed" - honestly, looks fine to me, but then I wouldn't pay that much for it - £50-60 at the most.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 26/07/2020 13:19

Cakes down south are very expensive. Some are hundreds.

There's a YTuber called Raphael Gomes who has a series of videos where he sends the same recipe to a 1 v 5 star bakery and then does a comparison - I'm sometimes startled by just how much the cakes cost even by London standards.

DarkDarkNight · 26/07/2020 13:20

No, that’s not the same standard at all. It’s hard to tell from the images but it doesn’t even look like a tall cake and the buttercream is not finished well. It doesn’t look professional. The cake you wanted is pretty modern and the one you have received with the little flowers is quite old-fashioned.

@Boomerwang what did you do?!

Sorry, Boomerwang can't answer right now. The police are digging up her patio.

GreyishDays · 26/07/2020 13:28

Hm. Is it just the buttercream that’s not smooth? If so I think it might be deliberate and ok. Can you post a pic of the whole of it?

waltzingparrot · 26/07/2020 13:28

If it's not up to her usual standard, maybe it's been done by someone else or just very rushed. Whatever the reason, I'd be asking her for an explanation. It's not a threat to tell her you wouldn't be able to recommend that standard of work, it's just a fact.

waltzingparrot · 26/07/2020 13:29

Also, ask for a reduction.

HerNameWasEliza · 26/07/2020 13:30

Did you specifically request buttercream icing? I am no expert but I don't think you can get a perfect finish with that and would have expected her to use roll icing instead. But if you requested this you can't blame her (if you didn't then yes, I'd be disappointed).

cookiesaurus · 26/07/2020 13:32

I'm a member of a baking school's Facebook page and sometimes people who have too many bookings/commitments offer out work to other people in the group.

Could your baker have done this and not informed you?? If she has, it is totally unreasonable and I'd be asking for a refund as I don't think the two cakes compare at all.

I paid £90 for this cake (SW London) and although it was expensive it tasted and looked good! I'd expect a sharper finish for £80!

Thisismytimetoshine · 26/07/2020 13:40

I'm flabbergasted at "new, modern rustic look" 😂

Professionally iced cakes aren't supposed to look rustic, surely; you could do that yourself?!
I certainly wouldn't pay 80 quid for a slap happy finish that sold itself as rustic. Fuck that.

Lougle · 26/07/2020 13:42

It's not good. You have to tell her. It's all wrong - the proportions, etc., are out.

Jonoula · 26/07/2020 13:43

Could you call her/ take it back and ask her to refinish.

Jamhandprints · 26/07/2020 13:45

Whats with the cutesy little rice paper flowers anyway? They weren't on the pic you sent and they dont match the style of rest of it at all.

forfoxsakee · 26/07/2020 13:45

She replied and basically said there is nothing wrong with it and it's buttercream and my previous cakes weren't which is why it looks different and it took three days to ice so wasn't rushed 🙄. I'm just going to reply saying that I appreciate that it is buttercream but it wasn't even smooth and it wasn't just that but the colour is awful and it's smaller than expected. I'm also going to say that I'm disappointed after being a loyal customer that she is not even willing to discuss why I'm disappointed or even offer an apology and I won't be ordering from her again. This was a previous cake she did for me.

I’m going to be baking a birthday cake for Ds soon.

It won’t be my usual shitshow - it will be modern and rustic. Thank you, cake gods.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 26/07/2020 13:49

My cakes are better than that🤣

Nottherealslimshady · 26/07/2020 13:50

It's terrible. I think she's probably let someone else do it who's learning. I'm an amateur hobby Baker and I wouldn't be happy producing that.

Thisismytimetoshine · 26/07/2020 13:51

Exactly, Wilburgh, I've been doing rustic for years. I've got it down to a fine art 😄

FlamingoAndJohn · 26/07/2020 13:51

Is the picture of what you wanted what you sent her or one from her catalogue?
