Would you be happy with the finding of this cake for £80

I ordered a graduation cake from a lady who I have used for years and all of the cakes have been beautiful which is why I've returned every time. However I picked up this yesterday and I'm a little disappointed in the size and finish compared to the picture I sent of how I would like it. I've messaged her to tell her I was a little disappointed with it but she hasn't replied so am I being unreasonable? She wasn't in when I picked it up she left it with her teen son to hand over so couldn't really say anything there and then.

@Funnyface1 - I think it has unravelled.

Badabingbadabum · 27/07/2020 21:02

God, I want some cake.

FilledSoda · 27/07/2020 21:48

Cake threads always end up so weird

If you ever want to use her again and it’s always been fine before, I wouldn’t consider leaving a bad review. If for example she’s done 15 great cakes and one not so good one, then leaving a bad review would be unfair. Always try and sort it out in private, especially when you probably need her more than she needs you

Sceptre86 · 28/07/2020 07:01

Not sure if anyone has pointed it out already but the original cake looks like it has been covered in fondant as has the previous one she has done for you. The current cake has been covered in buttercream and is different to work with. Could she have done a messy style on purpose? As a professional she should be able to work with buttercream just as well as fondant and I agree about the lettering(forgot about the 'I' and then put it in after). Did you ask for the flowers to be edible or were you ok with her using artificial? Did she say she would use the picture you sent for inspiration but not so a direct copy of someone else's design? I think you should have clarified aspects of the design like the flowers.

Yanbu to ask for a discount as it is not up to standard.

Oh! Harpies of MN!!! What have we done?

We have collectively crushed the hopes of a new business enterpeneur!

No more shall she yearn,
Now she knows she can't earn,
From the cake she might ice,
Doesn't look all that nice!

LioneIRichTea · 28/07/2020 08:02

Well this escalated Confused

wentawaycameback · 28/07/2020 08:31

This is a really enjoyable thread - thanks for the laugh OP. No way is she a cake maker to 'the stars'

I didn't make it but I was posting for my mum as she ordered it and she was wondering if it was worth it. She was next to me. I don't see why everything has to be scrutinised and people are always looking to catch you out to the extent of searching your posting history Confused I'm leaving this thread now anyway now she's got a unanimous verdict that it's a bit shit.

TheVanguardSix · 28/07/2020 10:48

It's not a bit shit at all. I certainly couldn't make a cake that nice.
What it's not is worth £80. It's not Caffe Concerto. And that's just the honest truth.
I do agree with you though. Why does MN have to turn into "SnoopMums- bring your bloodhound and boredom!"

Sorry you've felt so hassled, OP.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/07/2020 11:39

Grin stick around, it happens a lot when posts seem to have inherent contradictions!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 28/07/2020 11:59

Things get scrutinised exactly BECAUSE people like to troll the site and make shit up, people get invested (ok, that's their own fault) and then it turns out it was all a pile of shite.
So yeah, discrepancies do get picked up and pointed out, to avoid future disappointment - as someone has already mentioned, the "Frozen" cake troll was one such.

forfoxsakee · 28/07/2020 14:00

Anyway she replied and said that the cake was worth £80 because it was five hours labour costs, the ingredients were 25 and the flowers were apparently £15 Hmm. I think she's avoiding the point because i didn't dispute that cakes were expensive to make, I'm disputing the level of finish.

OP posts:
forfoxsakee · 28/07/2020 14:00

And she's contradicted herself because she said it took three days to ice Grin

Livingoffcoffee · 28/07/2020 15:15

@forfoxsakee if she is insisting she's happy with this cake that she did - 100% you should be putting a review on FB/etc with the comparison of what you asked for and what you got.

jessstan2 · 28/07/2020 16:00

Something may have happened to the cake in transit. It won't be the first time.

Tell her you'll give her sixty pounds and let that be the end of it. It's an awful lot of money to fork out for something you could probably have done yourself and nobody would have minded if it collapsed a bit on one side; on the contrary, they'd have been delighted that you went to some trouble.

Hamm87 · 28/07/2020 16:33

omg cake to make would have cost 15 tops the flowers a couple of quid so say 20 her 2 hours tops of work 10 an hour being nice but I would request half back her work is shit and not what you wanted I would just leave the review I make cakes and would never send one out like that

Thisismytimetoshine · 28/07/2020 16:36

It's hard to believe if she has such a rich clientele base that she's happy to risk her reputation for £80, tbh.

Stellakent · 28/07/2020 19:47

If you were not happy with it you shouldn't have eaten it.

Staffy1 · 28/07/2020 20:30

Did you send her a picture of it? Please do I found you haven't, pointing out the obvious flaws - the mottled numbers, letters that are out of place, (that "o" is driving me mad, it's out of position). Sorry, you must think I'm nuts posting so many times on the same thread, I don't know why this is bugging me so much.

Staffy1 · 28/07/2020 20:31

"If you haven't", not "I found".
