To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

I feel suffocated in them, I need an alternative option. Are there any that don't make you feel hot and stifled?

I'm fine wearing gloves, it's just the smothered feeling of a mask.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 25/07/2020 15:32

Yeah I give it two weeks. I'm avoiding shops because I don't want to wear a mask, and I suspect many will do the same. I've also seen lots of people not wearing them properly. It's another one of Boris's bits of ammunition to say the government handled the crisis correctly.

Downwardfacingdoggy · 25/07/2020 15:34

@LoafingLiz you can get ones with 1 way vents in which are ok

Rainingheavily · 25/07/2020 15:35

I think a possibility. Which would not have been as likely had it started in say April with colder weather.

bigbluebus · 25/07/2020 15:36

Just came out of the garden centre and said to DH "I've had enough of shopping in a mask already". I've worn it for 2 days for a maximum of 2 hours and I'm already fed up of being hot and sweaty and struggling to communicate in it. I don't think I'll get used to it.

ComDummings · 25/07/2020 15:38

It’s an absolute pain in the arse. I wear glasses and they’re so impractical with them, constantly steam up unless I have one with wire along the nose but I can’t afford loads of those masks. I bought medical tape to stick along my nose and under eyes to see if that helps but so impractical. And before anyone starts screeching “BUT WHAT ABOUT HCPs THEY MANAGE IT” well yes, they do but it’s their job, they have risk of actual bodily fluids splattering them and the medical masks aren’t quite as uncomfortable as the cloth ones to me.

RiverFlowers · 25/07/2020 15:40

I have just purchased some plastic face visors as they technically cover the nose and mouth - and they are classed as a face covering in Scotland - no actual guidance in the UK though but I am going to use them.

Also ordered some thin lightweight banana type masks - I can't stand normal face masks.

RaraRachael · 25/07/2020 15:41

I hate wearing one and am doing the bare minimum of shopping. I feel faint and my glasses steam up so I am continually taking them off. You're not meant to touch masks but what else can I do?

I'd like to burn the bloody thing Angry

OneForMeToo · 25/07/2020 15:43

They just make me feel hot and sweaty not great when feeling to warm makes me faint. I’m also a fast shallow breather if that makes any difference.

I just won’t shop unless I 100% have too.

Boogiewoogiebugleboy · 25/07/2020 15:44

Also the state of some of the masks were horrible looking. People fishing them out their pockets, leaving them lying on trolleys, delving in handbags to find a mask festering at the bottom ( shudder). Seems like a pretty good way to spread those germs around! Luckily my husband is not at all afraid of confrontation and would be perfectly prepared to shoot down any of the mask police in flames.

@LoafingLiz I am the same, feel i can’t breathe in them. Fair enough saying doctors and nurses have to do it all day everyday (my mum included) however I’m not used to it. Sick of hearing my complaints aren’t valid because of this.

Gloves really won’t do you any good at all, just wash your hands!

ragged · 25/07/2020 15:45

Hate 'em but assume we will have to get used to them for what will seem like very long time.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 25/07/2020 15:45

Face-masks are a bit uncomfortable but it’s not life-or-death to wear one for 20 minutes at a time. I’m prepared to endure a bit of short-term discomfort in order to avoid the risks of not doing so

labyrinthloafer · 25/07/2020 15:47

I think there's two groups of people - those who genuinely can't wear them, and bloody moaners.

There's rather a lot of moaners and they'll try their best to moan so much everyone gives up.

Oh my face felt a bit hot.
Oh it was itchy.
Oh everyone looked strange.
Etc etc etc

I guess we'll have to see how it goes. I wouldn't be surprised if the whingers win.

JammyHands · 25/07/2020 15:50

I find I've got used to them.

Suzanne12 · 25/07/2020 15:53

I wore one for the first time the other day and realised I could no longer see my kids without looking down. Just adds to the stress of shopping really so I'll be avoiding it as much as possible but know there will be times I'll have no choice.

MrsGrindah · 25/07/2020 15:53

So many people not wearing them in England already. It’s impossible to enforce.

labyrinthloafer · 25/07/2020 15:54

Yes, me too. I felt weird, but I read if you breathe slowly through your nose it's better, and it was.

I am happy to try for the sake of others.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 25/07/2020 15:55

I think I'd get used to them but I agree they're not fun.

On balance though it's wearing a bra again that's most off-putting about going out shopping, I've become accustomed to freedom-of-nork (and they're not insignificant in size) Grin

BusyProcrastinator · 25/07/2020 15:56

They’re pretty standard in parts of Asia and have been for years. A spike or 2 might change people’s minds.

I think they may lead to an oral health revolution as you definitely become aware of when you need to floss when wearing one.

YaWeeSkitter · 25/07/2020 15:56

Mandatory glove wearing would be a nail in the coffin of shops I think.
There is absolutely no point in wearing them to do your shopping in unless you wear them for every new action you take. So that is touching the handle of the trolley > new gloves> picking up an item to inspect or buy> new gloves x items > replacing each time you touch your face or hair or your child. Probably 1 box per shop .
Unless you have some of those magic ones I think people round here have managed to get hold of. They last all day long and the best about that is you dont need to antibac or wash them!

I have had to go to the shop today for some milk so wore a washable mask . I had to stop every so often to loosen the top from my nose get a proper breath. Im not asthmatic or anxious but found it very hot, stuffy and confining. I try not to go to shops much anyway so thats another reason to reduce my shopping trips.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 25/07/2020 15:56

So many people not wearing them in England already

Well, I didn't see anyone without one in Aldi earlier. We do the right thing up here Grin

JammyHands · 25/07/2020 15:56

@Boogie if your husband tried that with me, he'd get an earful. I not only wear a mask every time I'm in a shop or on a bus, I am continuing to distance as much as possible when other people do not. NOBODY is so special they have the right to risk the lives of other people so stop whinging and get on with, as most of us are already doing.

NameChange84 · 25/07/2020 15:56

I’ve been wearing them for months now. I forget I’m wearing it to be honest and really don’t personally find it a big deal. I realise I’m in the minority, at least on here, though!

TheMumblesofMumbledom · 25/07/2020 15:57

It's only been two days and I'm sick to death of the whiners!

I now have to wear one all day at work but I manage to somehow cope despite being very hot and sweaty.
