To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

In the big supermarkets here, everyone has been wearing masks.

Perhaps it's a British thing; people like to moan a bit but all conform in real life. I think people will very quickly adapt to shopping in a mask and get used to it without thinking about it.

An ICU doctor in Yorkshire ran 22 miles in a mask last week to prove they don't lower oxygen levels. His oxygen level was 98% throughout.
(Exemptions aside) he said If I can run 22 miles in one and work all day in one, then I think people can cope in a shop.

I bought a few fabric masks very early in lockdown, and have been wearing them in shops ever since. I'm not a big high street/mooching shopper so haven't been doing that, but for supermarket shopping & short trips into specific stores, I've got used to it really quickly: certainly in my most local supermarket, the vast majority are wearing masks now. Some designs fit me better than others, and I've done a bit of tweaking to get a better fit/more comfort, but once you find the right mask it's been OK. I'm not doubting those on this thread (& so many others) who are finding them uncomfortable, but I'm amazed there are so many people and hope that others will start to get used to them too. I DO feel bad for my mates with poor/non-existant hearing who rely on lipreading, so some of those masks with a 'window' are next on my shopping list.

That is exactly why we have to wear them, to reduce social distancing and be able to go about our days.
I really don't get people whinging about wearing one for a quick shop. I have to wear one for 8 hours a day at work, now that is uncomfortable, half an hour or so to shop/travel is nothing to complain about.

SantaClaritaDiet · 25/07/2020 16:35

RoaryMouth
Oh no, I wouldn't approach them either, but yes I would judge! And if they do come too close as some people do, I tell them to back off.

SockYarn · 25/07/2020 16:35

People who refuse to wear masks are basically giving the finger to everybody else, it's not about them.

Come on them @RoaryMouth, tell us all how you differentiate someone who is not wearing a mask because they are an arse, and someone who is not wearing a mask because they are medically exempt?

You can't. And it's not your job to police it anyway.

Popc0rn · 25/07/2020 16:36

"I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing"

Where did you hear this? Very much doubt that they will advise people to wear gloves for a virus that can be killed with regular hand soap or sanitizer Confused.

UntamedWisteria · 25/07/2020 16:36

The infection rate has been rising too:

@YouJustDoYou

I lived in Japan. It was utterly normal. Funny how westerners are unable to cope, but other countries have managed efficiently for decades.
I don’t think it’s particularly surprising that people who’ve been doing something for decades, especially if they’ve been doing it since they were children, might find they’re more accustomed to it than people who have never done it before, do you?
SmileyClare · 25/07/2020 16:36

My other half said I looked lovely in my mask, much younger sorry that made me laugh Grin

Oblomov20 · 25/07/2020 16:36

Yes. Dh and I both agreed after shopping today that we'd really rather not bother going shopping unless we really have to.

BruceAndNosh · 25/07/2020 16:37

Washable ones are the way to go, and change it frequently. A fresh mask is more bareable than one that's been breathed through for 20 minutes. And more effective

HamishDent · 25/07/2020 16:37

I’m in Scotland and have seen very few people not wearing them in shops. Whilst I dislike wearing them, I feel less awkward than before when it wasn’t a requirement. You’re always going to get some people who won’t comply (as opposed to can’t for legitimate reasons), but I think it will help if the majority do. I’m willing to do it to help our chances of getting schools back and a semblance of a normal life. I can’t say I’ll miss them when we can eventually stop using them.

pennylane83 · 25/07/2020 16:38

you can get ones with 1 way vents in which are ok

Medical professionals have stated that face masks with a valve should not be worn out and about by the general public due to the fact that air is forced through the valve creating a jet of air which is going to spread the virus more. There have been a few news articles regards this with government bods being criticised for wearing them. If the people mandating the law can't even get it right!

Inthebackoftheimpala · 25/07/2020 16:40

Not great when you're having hot flushes as I found out yesterday. Needs must though. What a relief it was to get it off.

OneForMeToo · 25/07/2020 16:40

See I will wear It I’m not a refuser but I’m not going to be going to the shops unless it’s something I can’t get online as due to the overheating issue. Last thing a shop or me want during covid is me passing out in the middle of their shops. Maybe we need air con and masks or is that counter productive 🤔

Regulus · 25/07/2020 16:40

OrangeBlossomsinthesun it's not often I have to look up the meaning of a word.

rwalker · 25/07/2020 16:41

Yeah there was a hilarious incident in home bargains with a woman mouthing off that she wasn't wearing a mask because she is shileding.

Yes shielding in the middle of home bargains no mask an trolly full of random shit not food essentials by and stretch .

Aveisenim · 25/07/2020 16:41

I don't like masks, I'm wearing one and have been for a while but I'm looking at face wraps/bandana's in the hope they may be more comfortable/feel less restrictive. I have asthma so I'm conscious of feeling like I can't breathe, however I'm also fully aware that just because it feels that way doesn't mean it actually is because I have generalised anxiety disorder so I'm just getting on with it. Wear a mask or risk spreading a potentially deadly virus? No contest really.

RoaryMouth · 25/07/2020 16:42

I didn't actually say that - I had pasted another poster from above to reply to them (just haven't quite worked out bold etc.). You'll see my post then says that I don't think it's my job to police others at all as other people's reasons are not my business.

Snorkelface · 25/07/2020 16:42

@SmileyClare - hah! No problem with him hearing what I replied through my mask. I'm currently googling the cost of a lower face lift.

Megan2018 · 25/07/2020 16:42

People can get used to anything, in the war gas masks and bunkers weren’t much fun but people survived. We are just a nation of snowflakes now. It’s just a mask when you go out, you aren’t being asked to wear it all day and night.
Masks aren’t nice but they really aren’t that big a deal. Anyone who can’t wear one should be at home as they clearly aren’t well enough to be out. The rest are just being dramatic.

butterpuffed · 25/07/2020 16:43

I don't think anyone likes wearing then but there are always more moaners in here than anywhere else.

Valleydad99 · 25/07/2020 16:43

I'm fed up the whole f-ing thing. I probably have cancer but the scan department is shut because of covid so I'll either be dead in 6 months or fine. I don't see why some people get priority of treatment due to having a virus & I'm told to go take a jump & whenever I raise this get told I'm being selfish. Yes I probably am, but so is everyone else so why can't I be selfish?? I'm fed up. Absolutely fed up & no-one gives a flying f a out me so why should I care about other people. Lost my job due to this virus, probably going to die & no-one cares but I'm expected to care about everyone else. People should wear things if they want & not if they don't. That's all.

Ness1234 · 25/07/2020 16:44

Just wear a mask! Think of the NHS staff that had to wear them for the whole of their shifts. I bet they didn’t exactly enjoy wearing all that PPE.

RoaryMouth · 25/07/2020 16:46

It's only on here and twitter that I've come across such strong views against masks. And I've not seen a single confrontation in a shop about the wearing of masks. It would certainly liven up my Asda trip but folk just seem to be getting on with wearing masks and minding their business round here.
