To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

This is just going round and round and round. Sounds crap @bemusedmoose, glad you came out the other side.

@A99Sing

I live in a very hot humid country where we’ve had to wear masks outside for over 12 weeks with no end in sight including the children have worn them all day to school. I was very hacked off about it at first but I’m used to it now. Do we like them? Nope. Am I sick of it? Oh yes, so sick of masks. But I have got used to it. We all have ones/styles that suit us more or less. We can go out and do things and have some semblance of normal life. And if it helps reduce cases and get us back to proper normal one day then I can live with the mask for a while
Yep same here, in Hong Kong. You get used to it. Just deal with it, we all have to. If our kids can do it we certainly can!

@Popc0rn
the medical grade lookalikes? knocked up using inferior products, not the same i'm afraid. god knows what they are made from but there is a marked difference in look and feel to the ones my daughter (NHS) wears.

cotton mask? i'm in a physical job. they are damp after 30 mins and on a 8/9/10 hour shift i'd be needing a lot of the things as would my 70 colleagues!

we are wearing them less and less anyway as they are actually creating hazards in some aspects of our job....going up/down ladders, using motorised equipment, not great for glasses wearers who steam up

i'd like someone to create proper, made for the job masks if this is going to be the norm through til next year

YankeeinKingArthursCourt · 27/07/2020 15:17

I hope that people aren't growing tired of them after such a short time. Masks are very likely going to become a part of our daily reality for some time to come.

We've been wearing them since April ( when the CDC recommended it for public use). I was sure that the UK would soon follow based on the body of evidence. Only took 3 months ( & thousands of lives).

Scruffyoak · 27/07/2020 19:10

hm. Not thought about the fan thing. Have only used it on low and in shops with Aircon anyway so not sure that would matter. No idea but its literally the only way i can wear a mask.

user1471500037 · 27/07/2020 19:11

I don't wear a mask - it just works

user1490954378 · 28/07/2020 02:12

Hubby, kids and I have been wearing masks and will continue to do so for how ever long we need to. We have been extremely lucky enough to still go on our summer holiday (not in England, but still in the UK) at the moment, and quite a lot of people are wandering around shops and using public toilets next to the beach without masks or gloves. There were 10 -15 people coming and going from the toilets yesterday around the same time as us, and we were the only ones wearing masks and gloves. I also used antibacterial wipes on the toilet seats and we took our own toilet roll too. No one else was doing anything similar from what I could tell (unless they had wipes in their bags). Incidentally the handwashing facilities were useless - no soap, minimal amounts of water dispensed, etc. It was one of those metal handwashing units where you have to press buttons to get water, soap, water again and then dry. So you have to keep pressing buttons everyone else has initially pressed, after they have initially been to the toilet. I decided we would bypass them after seeing others struggling with them. We took of our gloves, wiped our hands with our antibacterial wipes and used hand sanitizer once we were outside, and let them dry off in the air/sun. I had to go in there to change my sanitary pad, or else I probably would have avoided going in altogether, but my daughter announced that she really needed a wee when I said I was nipping into the toilet, so it was unavoidable!
I have asthma and a second health condition which causes breathlessness and dizziness, but I haven't found it THAT hard to wear a mask. Yes, it was a bit of a faff with the mask and gloves in the public toilets trying to sort myself out, and my young child, and I was glad to get the blessed masks and gloves off us once we were outside, but the world didn't end! My immune system is also compromised as a result of my second health condition. My daughter is also asthmatic and she is coping well with wearing a mask when needed. We both wear glasses too and this hasn't been an issue at all. It's just been a case of adjusting the mask a bit, but that's been ok. I would not consider going into a shop or any other enclosed public space right now without a mask. It's not that hard to do, you don't even have to to be in a shop (or wherever) for that long, and then you can take it off when you get outside!

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 28/07/2020 03:08

My local shop has admitted their orders from head office is not to enforce face masks and do not reprimand people not wearing them. They are a big chain.

QueenOfTheKong · 28/07/2020 03:16

I live in Hong Kong, where mask-wearing is essentially mandatory and has been for months now. Its currently 33 degrees and 80% humidity. While nobody would argue that the masks are comfortable, everyone just gets on with it. I find the sheer strength of anti-mask sentiment quite bewildering.

Bella2020 · 28/07/2020 03:17

I'm in Scotland and have only been out twice since masks were made mandatory and already I hate them. I feel absolutely suffocated, boiling hot & sweaty faced. Breathing in the hot air makes me panicky. I couldn't wait to get outside, tbh.

I don't get out much. I will wear one but they're putting me off going out now.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 28/07/2020 08:35

There is no point wearing gloves unless you take them off after each task. Shops here (Spain) don't ask you to wear gloves except for picking fresh produce and will actually stop you from entering wearing your own gloves from home.

Same in the supermarket I use every week. The staff have been told not to engage with mask less customers.

@smogsville

Wore mine for first time today to take DD to Lush, as promised. She's only 8 so exempt. We queued outside for five mins or so (Brighton store) which we didn't mind a bit. Staff lovely and friendly. But I was really surprised at how unpleasant I found mask wearing, probably for less the ten mins in the shop. It really put me off going to any shops more than necessary. It sounds dramatic but I felt quite light headed and had a mild headache when I came out. The mask is from white stuff, cotton and v light. I will continue to comply with rules but will be massively reducing my visits to shops.
That’s Lush for you. Guaranteed to cause headaches Grin
LittleBearPad · 28/07/2020 10:26

@Alsohuman that’s because they don’t trust the general public not to attack their staff if they are challenged.

It isn’t because the shops think people shouldn’t be wearing them. It’s an indictment of the great British public.

I’m not remotely interested in the reason. I merely pointed out that there would be no challenge there.

Quite agree. It's shameful.

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 28/07/2020 14:45

Actually, I was told it was because they didnt want to lose shoppers who had already put up with months of long cues, one way systems etc and they didnt want to impose further alienating customers. Plus that they had no way of confirming who medically could and couldnt wear a mask so it took that pressure off their staff.

HeIenaDove · 28/07/2020 14:54

@LittleBearPad there have been 50 incidents of abuse against disabled people since mask wearing became mandatory on public transport. They are more at risk.

EmbarrassedUser · 28/07/2020 14:58

In the butchers today I had to keep pulling mine away from my face because the guy was about 8 feet away and couldn’t hear me. Practically pointless wearing one!

HeIenaDove · 28/07/2020 15:01

People had to put up with rationing, air raids, gas masks and worse without bloody moaning

A lot of people DID moan. Dont talk crap.

Sennetti · 28/07/2020 15:09

more people out in the shops today with masks pulled down exposing noses!

starting to wear thin already, not even a week in!

PablosHoney · 28/07/2020 15:20

In the town centre today I only saw one person not wearing one.

DarkHelmet · 28/07/2020 16:30

As a mum with a young adult DD working in retail I'm glad she won't be put in the position of having to challenge people not wearing masks. Over the course of lockdown she suffered enough abuse at the hands of shoppers because their favourite loaf wasn't on the shelf that day, like it was her fault personally.

MulticolourMophead · 28/07/2020 18:46

I'm finding that around 2/3 of people are not wearing masks while outside in the open air, but everyone is wearing masks in the shops and enclosed spaces.
