To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

every other country who has been told to wear masks is managing fine

Except France... and Brazil... Mexico... Melborne...parts of USA.

I reckon masks will be here for a very long time (forever?)

Things are changing, a more densely populated world plus loads more viruses from that lab COVID-19 came from...

Spikeyball · 25/07/2020 16:24

"Are you guys looking for a fight about it? Why not just say he's exempt? I think most people are quite understanding."

If some non official randomer approaches someone about not wearing a mask, they are the one looking for a fight.

The guidelines are clear - members of the public should not be approaching other members of the public about it.

SockYarn · 25/07/2020 16:24

Gloves are pointless, unless you change them every time you touch something.

Agree with lots of people wearing masks over mouth only, and not putting them on or removing them properly.

britINscotland · 25/07/2020 16:24

I'm avoiding shopping as much as possible, so the retail industry will ultimately suffer a lot more.

I had to wear one to get my nails done and could not breathe. So I'm going to avoid beauty treatments and try to do treatments at home now.

I also know a mobile hairdresser who does not ask for masks so will use her instead of a salon. I will also use a home dye.

This will just kill businesses even more.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 25/07/2020 16:25

Yes, they are a bit uncomfortable but anything that will help to stop the spread of this disease is surely a good thing.

You'd hope so but some people take delight in calling them 'muzzles' Confused

NewKittyMeow · 25/07/2020 16:25

I wore one for a morning’s shopping with a friend today. Pretty much hated it and had to constantly adjust it because I have a tiny head and it kept slipping up to cover my eyes too. Horrendous and really put me off browsing in random shops. I’ll wear one when I’m in shops but it will mean I keep shopping to an absolutely minimum now.

The only people I saw NOT wearing them were some staff in shops and some stall holders on the indoor craft market we went in.

SockYarn · 25/07/2020 16:25

Oh and if you're in Scotland you have the option of a face visor. These are WAY more comfortable than a mask.

BritWifeinUSA · 25/07/2020 16:26

It takes some getting used. Masks have been “required” (I use the term loosely - it’s very dubious as to whether an order from the state governor is constitutional but that’s another argument) here since May and not just in shops and on public transport but everywhere. Even outside in the open air. They are uncomfortable in warmer climate and I’ve noticed here that as the weather gets warmer and warmer people are wearing them less and less. But I think after almost three months of masks we are all a bit mask-fatigued here - especially with temperatures of over 100 Fahrenheit.

I avoid wearing one as much as possible.

SweetPetrichor · 25/07/2020 16:27

They’re not the nicest things ever to wear but they’re not that bad. We did our shopping today and I noticed that most adults where wearing them properly, just a small number wearing them under the nose or other wrong ways. We did notice that every person not wearing one was a (fat) woman. Women seem to be the ones making excuses to get out of wearing them...as is pretty evident in this thread!

StateOfTheUterus · 25/07/2020 16:27

If you don’t like the way the mask feels, it’s a picnic compared to how it feels to be intubated....
I do feel incredibly sorry for hard of hearing people though - it makes communication much harder when you rely on lip reading

MrsGrindah · 25/07/2020 16:29

@SweetPetrichor Why on earth did you feel the need to point out the woman was fat?

GoshHashana · 25/07/2020 16:29

This endless moaning and griping about wearing masks proves what a spoilt, cosseted nation of whingers we've become. If there's another war, we're doomed.

NotAGirl · 25/07/2020 16:29

It took a bit of getting used to but I've been wearing one in shops for a little while.
I really want to get back to normal so prepared to do what it takes to help.

UntamedWisteria · 25/07/2020 16:30

People need to stop whinging about it.

We need to get used to it. It's for everyone's benefit.

Alloverthegrapevine · 25/07/2020 16:30

Bingo!

It's not a choice between a mask and a ventilator though. It's a choice between a mask and staying at home, which as we have already seen, destroys the economy that pays for the ventilators

UntamedWisteria · 25/07/2020 16:30

Personally, I feel much more comfortable about going shopping if everyone IS wearing a mask - I think it's a small price to pay to stay healthy.

downwardspiral1 · 25/07/2020 16:31

I’ve got used to wearing one from volunteering in a food bank during lockdown, and also wearing one in the supermarket for months now. (Currently at the hairdresser wearing one.)

You do get used to them, and it doesn’t have to be for a very long time each time.

It might feel weird now but I think by autumn / winter people will be glad that it has become second nature, when and if there is a second wave etc..

I am so glad they are mandatory on public transport now.

cologne4711 · 25/07/2020 16:32

It's not a choice between a mask and a ventilator though. It's a choice between a mask and staying at home, which as we have already seen, destroys the economy

It's a choice between being a considerate human being or an inconsiderate one.

If you really really REALLY can't bear wearing one (but don't have a disability), do your shopping online. That way you can still contribute to the economy and pay VAT.

happinessischocolate · 25/07/2020 16:32

I forgot to wear one yesterday at the corner shop, I grabbed some eggs and bread and as I went to the counter a woman entered the shop in a mask, I realised and apologised to the owner, he said "it's not up to me, only the police can do anything" he served me, I paid and left 🤷‍♀️

Today I went to Sainsburys and people were putting the masks on as the walked in the door and taking them off the as soon as they got to the exit. So you're still passing loads of people without masks the minute you get out the shop.

Also the first woman I saw in Sainsburys was holding her mask down by her chin as she was talking to her friend and there was several older guys who's masks covered their mouths, but not their nose 🙄
I'm more than willing to wear one, but I think it's pointless now and far far too late.

SantaClaritaDiet · 25/07/2020 16:32

I guarantee you that if the mask were to protect YOU directly (against pollution, against a horrible smell or smoke - think backgrounds like the Running Man)

people would miraculously get over their resistance and suddenly manage perfectly well with a mask.

RoaryMouth · 25/07/2020 16:33

If I notice someone isn't wearing one it's not my business is it?

Actually, it is. Wearing (most) masks is protection others, not yourself. People who refuse to wear masks are basically giving the finger to everybody else, it's not about them.

I feel so sorry for usually elderly people or people at risk who feel they have to accept a mask when it's the refusal of others who actually put them at risk.

But it's not my job to decide if someone is exempt or not. Store staff/police should be doing that. Do you think we should all be approaching people without masks and questioning them? Is it my business if they have a health reason for not wearing one (although if you have a respiratory problem so severe you can't wear a mask are you confident in going to shops in the current climate?) I choose to keep my distance (and judge inwardly).

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 25/07/2020 16:33

I wore one in the shop today for the first time, I honestly didn't like it, I felt as though I couldn't breathe! I am a real goody goody and will do exactly as I'm told so I will keep wearing them but I found it difficult.

Snorkelface · 25/07/2020 16:33

Other half told me I looked lovely in my mask, much younger he said - tbf he thought he was being helpful while I was saying I didn't like wearing it. But it's true, everything I hate about my middle aged face is hiding under that mask. New found love for the thing.
