To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

It’s oddly bizarre that every other country who has been told to wear masks is managing fine, but the Brits are acting like they’ve been blindfolded.
Masks have been compulsory where I live since early May and we are still wearing them everyday, don’t even think about it now, just part of going out.
All shops have signs up saying - “no masks no entry”. I can honestly say I have not seen someone without one anywhere near a shop in months, no one seems to suffer from any “can’t wear a mask” medical condition or if they do they are sensibly staying at home.
My 6 year old DD again wears one at school as do all the other kids, no issues there either.

It's annoying. When we went out to shop during lockdown we were careful not to touch our faces, now we constantly have to touch them to adjust the mask or remove it/put it back on when shopping in the high street. Stupid. And clearly just thrown in at the last push so that when there's an inquiry into the government's handling of the pandemic they can say oh we made masks mandatory but no one liked wearing them.

And using the comparison of a health care provider wearing one just doesn't cut it I'm afraid. It's their job, they wear light, disposable masks that get binned after each patient. Clearly not the same as a flustered parent with one mask doing a weekly shop in a busy supermarket with a couple of DC in tow. Stupid comparison.

I don't think people are whinging, I think they're letting off steam after doing something they found unpleasant. Probably better than letting the stress build up inside, and it reassures others that lots of us are finding it uncomfortable.

I've had to wear a mask at work for nearly 3 months and struggled at first, even in a supportive environment with all my colleagues doing the same, but we all gradually got used to it. I breathe differently when I wear a mask - mouth wide open, bit of a 'catching flies' expression, but that's fine because no-one can see through the material.

labyrinthloafer · 25/07/2020 16:03

@RainbowCookie yes quite. Unfortunately though we used up our entire national stock of fortitude during the blitz, whereas other countries have some left over for mask wearing.

AcrossthePond55 · 25/07/2020 16:03

@NameChange84

I’ve been wearing them for months now. I forget I’m wearing it to be honest and really don’t personally find it a big deal. I realise I’m in the minority, at least on here, though!
Me, too. Masks are mandatory where I live, have been for a few months now. It's not a big deal to wear one and our temps range from the mid-80s to low 100s (F).

If we're ever going to get this under control, we all have to do our bit to protect ourselves AND others. If it means a bit of discomfort, so what? I'm in my 60s, have asthma, and wear glasses (when I don't feel like putting my contacts in). I manage to wear a mask every time I go out with out collapsing in a fainting fit or having hysterics. Sorry Cookies, but toughen up.

TornadoOfSouls · 25/07/2020 16:03

No, I’m finding it’s getting easier the more I wear it. I really don’t mind it at all - and I am a very hot-faced, sweaty person.

Alloverthegrapevine · 25/07/2020 16:04

I think it will just stop people going anywhere and make things even worse for jobs and the economy.

It's not that I object to wearing masks, I'm happy to wear them when I need to be somewhere it's deemed necessary but if I don't need to be there, I probably won't go.

AcrossthePond55 · 25/07/2020 16:05

Oh, I used the term 'Cookies' to address all mask non-wearers. Not directed at RainbowCookie directly.

Babs709 · 25/07/2020 16:06

if your husband tried that with me, he'd get an earful OP says husband is exempt.

Brefugee · 25/07/2020 16:06

is nobody in the UK looking at the reasoning/advice.
2m distance without masks - with masks you can reduce the distance.

I'm still astounded how weird the English are being about this.

Redwinestillfine · 25/07/2020 16:07

Wears thin? It's not the latest craze, it's Government advice. It matters not whether people like it.

OneForMeToo · 25/07/2020 16:07

Oh I fully support the mask wearing thing. We all have at least one in this house even the children who apparently don’t have to have one.

But if they where supposed to make people feel more comfortable shopping and to get people back out and about it’s done the reverse for me personally. Just means Amazon’s getting even more of my money.

Alloverthegrapevine · 25/07/2020 16:09

I wish people would stop saying other countries just get on with it. A bus driver was murdered in France after asking a passenger to wear a mask. Appalling, but hardly proves all other countries are happily compliant.

Durgasarrow · 25/07/2020 16:09

We've been wearing them for months in the US and we are fine. You get used to it.

NameChange84 · 25/07/2020 16:09

When we went out to shop during lockdown we were careful not to touch our faces, now we constantly have to touch them to adjust the mask or remove it/put it back on when shopping in the high street.

I don’t remove it when going in and out of shops/in and out of the car etc, I just leave it on for the day and take it off when I know I’m on my way home.

I only touch the ear loops and try not to touch the part that covers the mouth or nose at all. I really do think the more you wear them the easier it gets.

Oaktree55 · 25/07/2020 16:09

Nope because come October this will spread like wildfire again. People will comply as they’ll be more careful when the hospitals are full again.

WhoLettheCatOut · 25/07/2020 16:11

I wore one for the first time for any period today and hated it. It made me hot, breathless and panicky. I am asking around for recommendations but my feeling is this is here to stay and I'm sure that if I keep having a go i will just get used to it. I'm trying to build up as I'll need them for around 45 mins to an hour when I start going back into the office.

WhenSheWasBad · 25/07/2020 16:11

I’m not that bothered by wearing a mask. Hated it the first day but rapidly got used to it.

I’m hoping people just get used to them.

KarenKarendson · 25/07/2020 16:11

if your husband tried that with me, he'd get an earful

Are you going to be challenging people who aren't wearing masks then @JammyHands?

HappyDinosaur · 25/07/2020 16:11

I've been wearing mine but I'm finding it really hard to communicate normally with my toddler when wearing it. I know that sounds strange, but it just feels wrong not to be able to smile at her etc. Obviously I will wear it when I have to, but it will definitely stop me going to the shops. They are actually harder to wear than I was expecting.

TornadoOfSouls · 25/07/2020 16:11

I think it will just stop people going anywhere and make things even worse for jobs and the economy.

I have seen surveys in my sector that suggest a majority would be more likely to visit certain places if compulsory mask-wearing was in place. I suspect there is quite a split on this overall but people who don’t want to wear masks are trying to say it will be counterproductive/bad overall because they themselves don’t want to wear them. I’m not having a go at posters here, it’s natural to look for arguments to back up our own points of view - and let’s face it these aren’t fun times for anyone - but I don’t think masks = financial and social Armageddon in the way some anti-mask people are predicting.

RoaryMouth · 25/07/2020 16:12

@Boogiewoogiebugleboy 'Luckily my husband is not at all afraid of confrontation and would be perfectly prepared to shoot down any of the mask police in flames.'

Are you guys looking for a fight about it? Why not just say he's exempt? I think most people are quite understanding.

labyrinthloafer · 25/07/2020 16:12

@Oaktree55 thanks for cheering me up there Grin

lifeafter50 · 25/07/2020 16:12

I would have gone shopping today but couldn't face either wearing a mask or being abused for not wearing one. I am going to save a lot of money at this rate.

TornadoOfSouls · 25/07/2020 16:13

@WhoLettheCatOut I think you’ll find it gets easier - I felt a bit panicky at first but now I’m fine.
