AIBU to think that porridge is the most cost effective breakfast

Two scoops of porridge oats, two cups of milk, two of water, some apple juice and currants to taste.
Fed me and two energetic boys. This must be the most cost effective and healthy breakfast? I suppose there's the gas to cook it as well.

Well if cost is the issue it's cheaper to make with just water, but yes, oats are probably the cheapest breakfast.

BalanchineBallet · 11/07/2020 08:09

Yes I think it is, energy per penny it must be one of the best.

You can make it cheaper if you need to with just water not milk.

GhostCurry · 11/07/2020 08:10

Skip the milk. Add a splash at the end.

Howcanwehelp · 11/07/2020 08:12

Thanks for the suggestions, my mother (the tightest person on earth) used to make it with pure water despite having thousands in the bank. I like to make it half and half to be a bit yummier :-). If it's pure oats and water that must be very cheap but not very good?

You can claim it and be happy if you and your boys like it. Personally I'd disagree as I can't stand porridge.

MrsToothyBitch · 11/07/2020 08:13

Was the least cost effective for me. It never filled me up- it left me bloody ravenous & requiring ever more snacks to make it through to lunch! I swapped to greek yoghurt for my waistline & my budget!

Coldilox · 11/07/2020 08:14

I make it just with milk, no water. It’s lovely.

I’ve never heard of putting apple juice in? Wouldn’t that curdle?

I prefer it unsweetened anyway.

Macncheeseballs · 11/07/2020 08:15

Yes I agree, it's cheap, filling and nutritious, dont know why more people dont eat it

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 11/07/2020 08:15

If it's pure oats and water that must be very cheap but not very good?

I was brought up with it and find the milk-versions unpleasant so it might just be what you're used to eating that guides your preference?

That said, I've seen people melt a knob of butter on water and oats and put a lick of treacle on it.

Heartofstrings · 11/07/2020 08:16

I can imagine it would be pretty cheap. Although we don't find it so here as we drink coconut/almond milk etc

TheChineseChicken · 11/07/2020 08:16

We make it with whole milk and mashed banana, maybe some strawberries or raspberries on top. Maple syrup if you’re feeling extravagant. Not the cheapest version but soooo delicious

TheChineseChicken · 11/07/2020 08:16

Oh and always jumbo oats

Howcanwehelp · 11/07/2020 08:16

I find a splash of apple juice (long life concentrated from the kids juice box) gives it enough sweetness that the kids don't have it covered in sugar like I was taught so I think it's healthier but I could be kidding myself.

Milk, honey and a range of fruit here and yes It’s yummy! But for kids I think good to mix up as cereals are fortified (or just take vitamins I guess??).

ChangeThePassword · 11/07/2020 08:19

I much prefer it cooked with just water, and a bit of milk on top once cooked, but I'm not a huge fan of milky things.

Oats by themselves make it pretty creamy.

ChrissyPlummer · 11/07/2020 08:22

Same as MrsToothyBitch, I’d be off on the hunt for a bacon and egg roll an hour after eating 😂 and I made it ‘properly’, not the powdered instant stuff. I find scrambled egg, bacon/salmon, avocado and toast or a full fry up much more satisfying and keeps me going till lunch.

dementedma · 11/07/2020 08:22

It may be cost effective, but having been force fed it as congealing slop as a child, you couldnt pay me to eat it now. Even the smell makes me gag.

PoloNeckKnickers · 11/07/2020 08:22

I have it most mornings. I make it with skimmed milk and then drizzle a skinny syrup or something on top and add a spoonful of Alpro plain yoghurt. It keeps me going until lunch time,

RedCatBlueCat · 11/07/2020 08:23

It's a great breakfast if you like it.
I cant stand the stuff, so it would be a waste of money here.

eaglejulesk · 11/07/2020 08:24

I make it with just water and put a dollop of yoghurt on top once cooked, and add blueberries in summer. Honestly I sometimes think it is my favourite meal of the day (and yes, very cost effective as well as nourishing).

Bagelsandbrie · 11/07/2020 08:25

I can’t stand fruit in it. Just lots of white sugar on the top. Which makes it bad health wise I guess! Blush i enjoy it sometimes, but couldn’t eat it every day.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 11/07/2020 08:32

Have it every single day! But have upgraded to jumbo oats which l soak all night....porridge snob now, wouldn't go back! But love it, cheap and healthy!

LockdownLump · 11/07/2020 08:37

I really wish I could like it. I've tried it on so many occasions, hoping my tastes may have changed, but the smell, the texture, everything about it makes me wanna 🤢

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 11/07/2020 08:38

Make with pinhead oats and all milk. Serve with a fruit compote (my favourite is apple and blueberries) and a splash of maple syrup. Gorgeous!

ShirleyPhallus · 11/07/2020 08:40

You can make it cheaper if you need to with just water not milk.

Urgh made this way it is gruel, not porridge.

And -10 more points if you then add a splash of cold milk which hits the hot porridge and makes a horrible thick skin, basically equalling a horrible congealed gruelly lump.
