AIBU to think that porridge is the most cost effective breakfast

Two scoops of porridge oats, two cups of milk, two of water, some apple juice and currants to taste.
Fed me and two energetic boys. This must be the most cost effective and healthy breakfast? I suppose there's the gas to cook it as well.

Was the least cost effective for me. It never filled me up- it left me bloody ravenous & requiring ever more snacks to make it through to lunch! I swapped to greek yoghurt for my waistline & my budget!

Same here, I thought i was the only one. It's always on the list of "slow release carbs, keeps you full til lunch" type things but it doesnt work for me.

mawbroon · 11/07/2020 10:34

I find porridge alone doesn't fill me up, but adding cream does. And it makes it more palatable.

I much prefer overnight oats though.

MotherMorph · 11/07/2020 10:36

How do you all find time to cook it? And wash pots. I guess it depends what time you start work. I’m up at 530 and couldn’t face it. I have the porridge in the pots I like to think they are healthy but I bet they aren’t.
I dont eat it but my son does. I put 1 cup oats, 1 cup boiling water, 1 cup milk and put in the microwave for 2-3 min. It would take that long to make toast and a cup of tea. And then put the bowl in the sink to soak.

Love those flavoured Quaker sachets. Golden syrup and apple and blueberry are nice.

I put a sachet and some soy milk and frozen berries in a Pyrex jug in the fridge overnight. The berries defrost and the oats go super super creamy. A few minutes in the microwave in the morning and job done. A lifesaver when you have busy mornings and need to get out early or do other stuff.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 11/07/2020 10:37

If you like it, sure. If you hate it and it makes you feel sick then no, it's not a cost effective breakfast at all. It's one of those things I want to like but just can't.

Ducksarenotmyfriends · 11/07/2020 10:41

Love porridge! We buy 25kg sacks of oats so it works out super cheap. In summer I make overnight oats or homemade granola with dates, honey, coconut oil, nuts, seeds and toasted dessicated coconut.

For porridge, it's great with mashed banana and a spoonful of nut butter or cacao Smile

thunderthighsohwoe · 11/07/2020 10:42

I used to love it, but it made me starving by 11! Much better now on no breakfast, bar a cup of teas

Ardnassa · 11/07/2020 10:43

Love porridge. I tried making it with water but making it with skimmed milk fills me up until lunchtime and tastes so decadent.

Always have it with chopped fruit and some nuts..sometimes some raisins for added sweetness.

Also got lots of tasty tips from this thread so thank you OP!

MessAllOver · 11/07/2020 10:44

I hate porridge. However, it's cheap and healthy so I've force-fed it to DS since we started weaning him and he quite likes it Means I can keep the bacon and eggs or pains au chocolat for myself Grin.

@Alanna1

Milk, honey and a range of fruit here and yes It’s yummy! But for kids I think good to mix up as cereals are fortified (or just take vitamins I guess??).
I love a bit of honey on my porridge too.

No need for vitamin supplements unless you're deficient. Cereals are the ultimate fake food: the added vitamins are just there to help sell. If you're eating real food, like porridge and fruit then you def dont need to be supplementing with fortified junk food.

I like porridge (I make it with water and pour over a little milk to eat it). The best I ever had was in a b&b in the highlands - cooked overnight in the aga (with, i suspect, full cream milk)

Bircher is also good - mix oats, yoghurt, grated apple and a little honey (add any berries you have). Overnight on the fridge and it’s very nice.

Ardnassa · 11/07/2020 10:48

For those wondering about time to make it: hot porridge has been one of the tiny silver linings of lockdown for me. I start work at 6am but then take a break to make porridge at 8.30am.

Pre lockdown I would make overnight oats. Eaten cold the next day at work (with fruit and nuts) - a different texture but also delicious.

SerenityNowwwww · 11/07/2020 10:49

I am lazy and discovered you can pop it in the microwave.

Also - add pinch of turmeric, saffron, tahini and cardamom. Mmmmmmmm.

user1493494961 · 11/07/2020 10:50

Love porridge, it fills me up for the morning, a cooked breakfast would fill me up until the evening.

HarlanWillYouStopNamingNuts · 11/07/2020 11:01

Love porridge - water only, no milk for me. Sweeten with a bit of brown sugar or Nutella. Also make a spiced version with chai tea mix as I'm usually too lazy to drag out multiple spices from the cupboard.

SerenityNowwwww · 11/07/2020 11:03

Sweeten? You heathens...

Rookie93 · 11/07/2020 11:03

Love porridge and often have some, particularly in winter when I haven't had time for supper and get in after 10pm for some reason. Minimal cooking in a microwave for a couple of minutes and I use water to mix. Usually add a small knob of butter to melt and some freshly grated nutmeg, then a splash of milk at the end. Fills me up and makes me feel warm inside, so definitely a comfort food.

Have a friend who adds grapes/blueberries but can't get my head around fruit and porridge. Will have try the overnight oats & yoghurt though they sound yummy.

Canklesforankles · 11/07/2020 11:04

Just eating a bowl of porridge made in microwave, half milk, half water.
Topped with rhubarb cooked with a bit of sugar and a dash of Cointreau. Very nice.

OMG that sounds good.

formerbabe · 11/07/2020 11:07

Porridge never kept me full to lunch. I really don't like it but I'd eat it if it stopped me snacking, except it doesn't.

Horrible stuff. I'd rather just have a cup of coffee

I think toast is probably the cheapest breakfast...if you get a cheap supermarket loaf for 50p. I don't like toast either...or cereal.

I think it's just the blandness of toast, cereal and porridge that makes me dislike them. I prefer eggs which I often cook with onions, peppers, tomatoes, chilli and coriander.

cheezy · 11/07/2020 11:07

I always want to love porridge but find it leaves me sleepy and hungry unless I load it with protein like peanut butter or nuts of some description.

CoffeeCup34 · 11/07/2020 11:09

If I only have porridge I’m starving an hour later, I much prefer a fried egg sandwich which keeps me full till lunch time.

MarioPuzo · 11/07/2020 11:10

Maybe there's something related to our different insulin levels that make porridge filling for some people but make others ravenous?

I love the taste of porridge but it makes me so hungry. If I had no breakfast at all I would be less hungry by lunchtime than I would if I ate a bowl of porridge in the morning! Carbs in general don't fill me up, I need protein and fat to feel sated.

I make porridge (only just covered in water) in the microwave straight in the dish I'm going to eat from. I add chopped nuts and seeds plus frozen berries added at the beginning. Then add Greek yoghurt and maybe a little splash of honey or maple syrup on the of the yoghurt. Lovely - and lasts me until mid/late morning when I have a piece of fruit.
