AIBU to think that porridge is the most cost effective breakfast

Two scoops of porridge oats, two cups of milk, two of water, some apple juice and currants to taste.
Fed me and two energetic boys. This must be the most cost effective and healthy breakfast? I suppose there's the gas to cook it as well.

I make it with skimmed milk, I find it too gloopy otherwise. No need for apple juice etc, just a teaspoon of dark brown sugar.

HavingAMoan · 11/07/2020 09:45

I make it in the microwave.

allfalldown47 · 11/07/2020 09:47

Not cost effective for me either, for some reason eating porridge just opens the floodgates of hunger for me!

Goatinthegarden · 11/07/2020 09:50

I love porridge. I have it every day and I leave the house at 7am (when not locked down), it doesn’t take too much time, I just let it cook whilst I make my packed lunch.

I cook whole rolled oats with just water and add flaxseed once cooked. Then top with loads of fresh berries and sometimes maple syrup in the summer (banana, cinnamon and walnuts in winter). I guess it’s not quite so cheap with all of the extras.

I also like overnight oats, but that’s far more expensive as I have coconut milk, chia seeds, yoghurt, fruit etc. I’m more productive in the mornings too and can’t usually bother myself to make breakfast the day before...

Llamazoom · 11/07/2020 09:50

I want to like porridge but the smell of it makes me heave, I can just about manage Ready Brek but I’m left feeling a bit sicky for hours, can you have an intolerance to oats?

megletthesecond · 11/07/2020 09:51

Yes. But my kids hate it. They won't even eat flapjacks.

I have oats every day.

Jumbo oats, skimmed milk a drizzle of honey and a spoon of natural peanut butter.... Creamy, sweet and nutty Wink

messyhouselady · 11/07/2020 09:56

It makes me so bloody hungry!

Time2change2 · 11/07/2020 09:56

It’s cheap but really not healthy to have often

romeolovedjulliet · 11/07/2020 10:00

well, thank you very much everyone !!! i want a bowl now with skimmed milk and gran sweetner [yum] but i've just had my breakfast, not porridge though. Sad

Mytupenceworth · 11/07/2020 10:03

Overnight oats here most days. No need to cook, filling healthy and yummy! For anyone who wants to try it, porridge oats in a kilner jar top with frozen berries and top with yoghurt. Store in the fridge overnight and the porridge absorbs the moisture from the fruit and yoghurt

Appuskidu · 11/07/2020 10:05

Cleaning up the congealed pan after DD has porridge makes me not want to suggest it!

Palavah · 11/07/2020 10:10

@clavinova porridge in China is rice and no milk, so different nutritipmal profile from porridge made with oats and milk.

0ellenbrody0 · 11/07/2020 10:12

@EspressoPatronum

I make porridge fingers and spread with peanut butter. Delicious!
I’m intrigued - what are porridge fingers?
MashedSpud · 11/07/2020 10:16

I make it with half milk, half water, zap it in the microwave for 4 mins (stirring at 2 mins) and don’t add salt or sugar.

Nice protein content, tasty and keeps me full all morning.

mellowgreenspring · 11/07/2020 10:18

I didn't know about the boiling water aspect, I've always used oat milk in mine, but might try with water and splash the milk at the end? I've also never thought to put yogurt on.

I love it and change everyday in terms of toppings, but I always stir in a small scoop of protein powder so make it banana or chocolate flavour add in fruit and flax seed on top.

Also jumbo oats? Where do I find these? I love it but I've never expanded into different oat types!

whattimeisitrightnow · 11/07/2020 10:19

Also, bear in mind that this is MN, where carbs are the devil, so you’ll get posters telling you it’s unhealthy even though oats are highly nutritious and have lots of health benefits.

mellowgreenspring · 11/07/2020 10:21

People who do overnight oats do you then eat it cold from the fridge? Or heat it up?

I never fancied cold oats but maybe I'm being dim?

Chanjer · 11/07/2020 10:22

Makes me ravenous if it's just porage

Not cost effective for me either, for some reason eating porridge just opens the floodgates of hunger for me!

If you add a sufficient protein part to the meal then it doesn't do it. It's something to do with that some people's body treat it as low GI and other people's bodies treat it as high GI or something I can't remember

But anyway, adding protein makes it better

PenguinBarnotBird · 11/07/2020 10:27

@Macncheeseballs

Yes I agree, it's cheap, filling and nutritious, dont know why more people dont eat it
Probably cos it’s 🤮
eaglejulesk · 11/07/2020 10:28

It’s cheap but really not healthy to have often

Why? Oats are nutritious, contain fibre, aren't loaded with sugar and contain vitamins and minerals. What's bad about that?

Whoopsies · 11/07/2020 10:28

We (me, ds 6 and ds 11 months) eat it every day. I make it with whole milk so it's pretty luxurious. We have fruit in it in the week and at the weekend we have 'snickers porridge' with dark chocolate peanut butter and honey in it!! (Not the baby!)

Coulddowithanap · 11/07/2020 10:29

I love my porridge with water and microwaved. Tried it with milk but find it too creamy. I also don't like sugar in it, yes I'm weird!

pandora206 · 11/07/2020 10:30

I tend to add nuts and agave syrup to mine but my favourite is with Craisins and desiccated coconut (added before not after simmering). Oh and a dollop of Greek yogurt goes down well too.
