AIBU to think that porridge is the most cost effective breakfast

Two scoops of porridge oats, two cups of milk, two of water, some apple juice and currants to taste.
Fed me and two energetic boys. This must be the most cost effective and healthy breakfast? I suppose there's the gas to cook it as well.

I prefer overnight oats to porridge, I use fruit juice as the liquid and add chopped fruit, then yoghurt on top to serve.

OldSpeclkledHen · 11/07/2020 19:05

Overnight oats, bung in microwave for 2 mins - yummy yummy in my tummy

BigChocFrenzy · 11/07/2020 19:10

I have protein porridge pots - they have added whey protein plus inulin (chicory) for sweetener
Just pour on boiling water and stir for a minute, then I like to stir in frozen bilberries

It's a small pot, only about 200 calories, plus another 50 for the berries,
but keeps me full until lunch

BigChocFrenzy · 11/07/2020 19:10

To keep costs down, you could just stir in whey protein powder to ordinary porridge

FrugiFan · 11/07/2020 19:16

I've tried it a few times but never been convinced on the texture... however now I feel like I should try it again because all your topping ideas sound yummy.

I like overnight oats which I usually top with frozen raspberries (much cheaper than fresh and I quite like that they're a bit more tart).

PaperMonster · 11/07/2020 19:18

I like porridge but (a) I’ve never actually found it very filling and (b) it sends my blood sugars soaring. So I rarely have it - but I make it with milk and sprinkle cinnamon on when I do.

SheWranglesRugRats · 11/07/2020 19:18

Everyday breakfast for us, but we have to import the oats as French supermarkets view them as a niche (ie luxury) item.

Really ? We can get them all over the place.

Put a dollop if stewed rhubarb in OP. You’ll thank me.

Lozz22 · 11/07/2020 19:22

@mellowgreenspring

People who do overnight oats do you then eat it cold from the fridge? Or heat it up?

I never fancied cold oats but maybe I'm being dim?

No just layer porridge oats with yogurt and frozen fruits and stick in the fridge overnight. Then in the morning mix it all together and eat it. I can't stand porridge but I do like overnight oats. Although I need to have frozen blueberries in to make it go a different colour otherwise I can't touch it. All I ate when I was younger was porridge so I think that's put me off having it the normal way. The only other thing porridge oats were designed for is to make flapjacks
Howcanwehelp · 11/07/2020 20:00

The person who said about the rubarb, I have a recipe for rubarb crumble slices, so half crumble, half flapjack with big chunks of rubarb. I love them but I'm the only family member that does.

I soak ours in whey/water overnight and then microwave it to cook it the next day.

The only other thing porridge oats were designed for is to make flapjacks

And granola, cranachan (should be oatmeal but good with oats), ground into oat flour for Staffordshire oatcakes, homemade hobnob or Anzac biscuits (heretical take, these should never have coconut in) and decent in some crumble mixes.

StopGo · 11/07/2020 20:24

DS is currently into overnight oats with either Greek yogurt or Skyr, and some coconut milk, really seems to fill him up.

He climbs mountains so everything is energy and weight counted. We've worked out how to make instant oats with oats, dried milk etc. Make them into tiny ziplock bags, works a treat. The bags come home, washed and reused.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 11/07/2020 20:41

Salty porridge was a highlight at my grandparents’. Bit of sugar oR stute cherry jam. I quite liked it as I assumed it was a German or Jewish thing. It turns out they were just insane.

My ,mother though, oats , milk and water. Topped with brown sugar, honey and cream . Some like a milk moat but that’s nasty.

BiRicher muesli. With cream and sliced banana. I’d face fuck a bowl of that right now.

PickAChew · 11/07/2020 20:45

Lactofree with a pinch of salt or soya milk, with sliced banana on top. I don't like it too sweet.

And if I was going to make it with water, I'd rather just have a slice of toast, for all the nutritional value.

DivisionBelles · 11/07/2020 20:50

Oats, half milk half water, chick in a banana. Microwave for two minutes then put almonds and a dash of maple syrup on top. Cheap and keeps me going until lunch time.

SpeedofaSloth · 11/07/2020 20:55

I eat my overnight oats cold, from the fridge.

eaglejulesk · 11/07/2020 21:45

The result is a grey slop that actually holds together after being in the bowl 5 mins... if you tipped it out, it would hold the shape of the bowl.

Mine isn't a grey slop, but it holds together in the bowl and if it doesn't I'm disappointed! I don't like liquidy porridge and know exactly how long to microwave it to get it thick.

Just about to have my weekend treat of sticky date porridge - not so healthy but delicious Smile

thegcatsmother · 11/07/2020 22:59

I cook porridge with cinnamon in it and blueberries. If it's for me, then cinnamon, and maple syrup or demerara sugar on top, and whatever cream I have in, be that double or clotted.

goose1964 · 11/07/2020 23:03

If it won't get eaten it's a waste of money. I only like porridge if it's swimming in sugar but I'm diabetic and no-one else likes it all.

AgeLikeWine · 11/07/2020 23:09

Own-brand weetabix is also a very cost-effective healthy breakfast, each biscuit costs about 6-8p.

Fatted · 11/07/2020 23:12

What about the 500 hundred years you have to wait for it to cool?

SionnachRua · 11/07/2020 23:13

Absolutely agree OP. I love porridge made with milk and a scoop of peanut butter. Usually throw in a few frozen blueberries too and leave it soak overnight...I could definitely make it more frugal but there's plenty of nutrition and bang for your buck in that!

Porridge with oat milk and crumbled frozen raspberries is great too.

SengaStrawberry · 11/07/2020 23:17

It is very cheap, unfortunately I think it’s vile. I’ve tried many times to eat it but not for me :(

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 11/07/2020 23:19

DC would eat porridge for every meal if they could. Oats, skimmed milk, zap in the microwave, drizzle of honey or a spoonful of brown sugar. Three minutes maximum? If I've been uncharacteristically organised, there will be raspberries added before serving.

My dad has his like normal cereal - just oats, cold full fat milk, and sugar. That's rank though. But not as rank as one friend whose parents used to add raw egg to their porridge. Just thinking about it makes me want to boak.

morriseysquif · 11/07/2020 23:22

Agreed, but full fat milk and muscavado sugar does add to the joy!

stardance · 11/07/2020 23:36

I much prefer 'ready brek' style to the lumpy oats. With a sprinkle of sugar. But strangely I find it makes me really hungry really quickly?!
