AIBU to think that porridge is the most cost effective breakfast

Two scoops of porridge oats, two cups of milk, two of water, some apple juice and currants to taste.
Fed me and two energetic boys. This must be the most cost effective and healthy breakfast? I suppose there's the gas to cook it as well.

I can’t stand porridge

EasyAndy101 · 30/09/2020 12:36

If I skip breakfast, I can go to lunch. If I eat it, even eggs on wholemeal toast or by themselves, I'm starving by mid morning. Any idea why?

You spike your (already increased from waking up) insulin levels by eating in the morning and the resulting drop in blood sugar makes you hungry again sooner

This doesn't apply to everyone and it's more likely to happen to you if you're healthy/active

towers14 · 30/09/2020 12:54

Microwave, 3 mins, skimmed milk & sweetener, yum.

user1471538283 · 30/09/2020 16:59

I wish I liked it but I don't. My DGM used to make hers with just milk. For a tiny woman she could eat a huge bowl. My GGF used to make his with water and salt

Pre soaking jumbo oats in water overnight and cooking the next day with a bit more water was a game changer. Not as long to cook and they turn out so creamy compared to non-soaked. I like to add a bit of salt and honey. Definitely a healthy and cheap breakfast!
@clavinova porridge in China is rice and no milk, so different nutritipmal profile from porridge made with oats and milk.
Congee?

Rice cooked to a mush and a choice of sweet or savoury. I cooked it a few times when DH was ill.

SlopesOff · 30/09/2020 20:05

If you like the healthy option do not read this -

Made with full fat milk.
Drizzle some condensed or evaporated milk and some sugar if required and stir it in, with more full fat milk.

Especially nice at bedtime while watching catch up TV before nodding off.

I agree - great breakfast. (If you want it cheaper you can soak overnight so less cooking.) I have it with compote made from blackberries picked and frozen.

impossible · 30/09/2020 20:50

I do like it sweet and creamy but some of my family make it with water and salt...

eaglejulesk · 01/10/2020 00:59

Jam on toast is cheaper and tastier.

How is it cheaper? A loaf of bread costs more than a packet of porridge oats, and then there is the jam on top (unless you make your own).

Two sliced Asda value whole meal bread 10p. Bit of butter 7p. Dollop Asda value jam 3p.

seayork2020 · 01/10/2020 02:53

We have mix water/milk then milk at the end plus brown sugar only

fallfallfall · 01/10/2020 03:25

i buy the oats (rough cut) bakers bulk in a 20kg bag. store it in the freezer as it lasts forever that way.
use 1/2 milk (full fat) and 1/2 water.
top with a mash up of steamed fruits (mainly rhubarb, apples, strawberries and other windfall fruits).

But you don't buy butter and jam in "bits" or dollops", or bread in slices. Also, some of us don't buy value jam (and any jam I buy would not be used on bread - gross!) I can't be bothered to work out how much a third of a cup of oat costs, but the water costs nothing.

You don’t buy milk by the cup either as far a shake I’m aware. Also some of us think porridge oats are gross, especially if made with water vomit 🤢. And don’t most people mainly buy jam to put on toast?

Rangoon · 01/10/2020 04:35

I soak my rolled oats in water with a modest amount of salt overnight. I drain the water off and coak with milk. When it's in the bowl I add sugar and pour milk over. It doesnt taste salty at all. This was the way my Irish dad cooked it but I thought it might have had some distant Scottish influence.

Adds jumbo oats and Greek yogurt to online order Smile

I don't make porridge with milk (vomit). Most people probably do buy jam to put on toast, but I don't - in fact I rarely even have toast, but if I do certainly never with anything sweet on it. It just goes to show we are all different - but I still don't see how porridge made with water can be beat cost wise.

It sure does because OP ( who’s post I was originally replying to) does make her porridge with milk ( and apple juice and raisins).

Porridge is a weekend only activity here, it takes too long on a work day.

Soak in milk overnight and a couple of minutes in the microwave Smile

We eat tons and tons of it every day on winter.

seayork2020 · 01/10/2020 05:40

I use normal oats and put it on low (with the milk/water) and cook it while making a sandwich in the morning its done in about 5 mins

Pinkyandthebrainz · 01/10/2020 07:11

I make mine with milk and water. Spoonful of nutella/peanut butter. Fruit on top. Or my ultimate favourite...with golden syrup and double cream.

Now if I was gonna eat porridge THIS is how I would eat it. 😋

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 01/10/2020 11:35

I like Flahavans best, DH likes Scott’s, different brands are slightly different. I always have mine with honey if it is the plain one. I sometimes get the Flahavans sachets if they are on offer, the one with apricot, raisins and sunflower seeds in

CayrolBaaaskin · 01/10/2020 11:37

YABU - Porridge is made with water not milk. You may put milk on top but it’s not made with milk.

But it is delicious and cheap.
