AIBU to think that porridge is the most cost effective breakfast

Two scoops of porridge oats, two cups of milk, two of water, some apple juice and currants to taste.
Fed me and two energetic boys. This must be the most cost effective and healthy breakfast? I suppose there's the gas to cook it as well.

I like porridge and my DS loves it. I make it with milk (water only if out of milk), DS likes it with a spoonful of jam or a drizzle of golden syrup (not the healthiest but meh)

It is amazingly cheap - a big 1kg of oats costs about £1 and lasts forever.

grafittiartist · 11/07/2020 08:47

Water and salt here! Delicious!
I rarely have it, but it is cheap filling and tasty.

Bargainhuntbore · 11/07/2020 08:55

🤢

Reminds me of slops in Oliver.

Its cheap for a reason,

sillybean · 11/07/2020 08:56

The reason for cooking it in water is that you can cook it at a higher temperature for longer, thus getting it nice and creamy. Usually needs a good 15 mins with regular stirring.

Milk burns easily at too high a temperature so you can't cook it for as long and get it to the same texture as the one cooked in water.

You can add the splash of milk at the end to make it even creamier and cool it down a little.

Love porridge esp. with with golden syrup. Or strawberries and yoghurt, or banana and cinnamon. I tried a Jamie Oliver chocolate orange porridge once, wasn't for me.

I love it, and as comfort food in winter I have a huge bowl made with all Channel Isle milk, adding cream and demerara sugar on top. Delish! (and rather calorific Grin)

AriettyHomily · 11/07/2020 09:00

Awful stuff, don't care how cost effective it is.

SerenDippitty · 11/07/2020 09:02

I make it with skimmed milk and have it with a little bit of honey and a good sprinkling of cinnamon.

EspressoPatronum · 11/07/2020 09:07

I make porridge fingers and spread with peanut butter. Delicious!

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 11/07/2020 09:08

I love porridge and have it for dinner twice a week as part of a 5:2 diet. A box of oats lasts about 3 months.

femfemlicious · 11/07/2020 09:08

Eggs and a slice of toast is the best breakfast. Really keeps you going till lunch.

Fried with some onion and tomatoes nigerian style. YUMMY

EachandEveryone · 11/07/2020 09:18

How do you all find time to cook it? And wash pots. I guess it depends what time you start work. I’m up at 530 and couldn’t face it. I have the porridge in the pots I like to think they are healthy but I bet they aren’t.

Howcanwehelp · 11/07/2020 09:21

Porridge is a weekend only activity here, it takes too long on a work day.

I have to confess I have Oats So Simple and make it in the microwave.

lockdownparty · 11/07/2020 09:23

I find eggs keep you full for longer but we like porridge too.
DS and I just had some actually, and lots of strawberries.

whattimeisitrightnow · 11/07/2020 09:25

I bloody love porridge - eat it every day. Pinhead oats, water, frozen blueberries, cinnamon. Perfection. Also cheap, healthy and filling.

zingally · 11/07/2020 09:25

Probably is.

Wouldn't be for me, as I find porridge absolutely minging. Baby vomit in a bowl.

I have an egg and a banana for breakfast. That's probably about 35p. But unless you're going full English every morning, breakfast foods are all pretty cheap. 2 slices of toast would probably be 10-15p, depending on toppings.

whattimeisitrightnow · 11/07/2020 09:26

You can make them in the microwave easily. Only takes a few minutes

AuntieMarys · 11/07/2020 09:28

I have it most mornings. Or overnight oats. Love it.

CherryPavlova · 11/07/2020 09:29

Good, filling, comfort food. My husband has it most of the year, but a bit warm for summer. I don’t eat breakfast but we do have it for supper sometimes on cold evenings when we’ve had cooked lunch.

Camomila · 11/07/2020 09:29

Microwave here!
I like it made with milk, and a drizzle of honey and some blueberries on tops.

I wonder if eating porridge for breakfast in Scotland is linked to the origin of 'canny' (frugal/thrifty)? My friends from an ex-communist country eat a lot of porridge out of habit;

"A breakfast to make you go build communism." Grin

www.rbth.com/arts/2015/07/03/a_breakfast_to_make_you_go_build_communism_47455.html#:~:text=In%20the%20Soviet%20era%2C%20the,oats%20was%20called%20%E2%80%9CHercules.%E2%80%9D

Porridge controversy in China recently;

"An infectious disease expert has sparked controversy among netizens by suggesting kids have eggs and milk for breakfast, not porridge, during the pandemic prevention period.Critics questioned the expert's preference for "Western-style breakfasts", and some even slammed him for being xenocentric."

"The hashtag "Zhang Wenhong said not to eat porridge for breakfast" has received more than 100 million views and 64,000 discussions on Weibo as of press time." [April]

"Zhang Wenhong, a Shanghai-based infectious disease doctor, was pulled into the discussion after a video clip on China's social media platform Sina Weibo started gaining attention, in which he said that "Chinese kids must have food with high nutrition and high protein, such as eggs and milk, for breakfast every day before going to school and should not eat porridge," urging parents to pay more attention to their children's diet at this special time."

Oats do awful awful things to my bowels, it just isn’t worth it. I spent a good three months having oats for breakfast everyday, but it didn’t fill me, my blood sugars were all over the place and I was awfully bloated and erm, urgent the whole time.

I went back to my daily scrambled egg and black beans, much better and only a small amount to make me feel full until lunch.

Beautiful3 · 11/07/2020 09:39

Love porridge with milk and sweetner!

makingmammaries · 11/07/2020 09:41

Cook it in the microwave. No pots to scrub and if you set the timer 5 minutes at a time you don’t need to watch it. Everyday breakfast for us, but we have to import the oats as French supermarkets view them as a niche (ie luxury) item.

HavingAMoan · 11/07/2020 09:43

The DC love porridge, they put jam or chocolate spread or golden syrup in it. I’ve never made it with water.
