AIBU to think that porridge is the most cost effective breakfast

Two scoops of porridge oats, two cups of milk, two of water, some apple juice and currants to taste.
Fed me and two energetic boys. This must be the most cost effective and healthy breakfast? I suppose there's the gas to cook it as well.

I make it just with water and it is very yummy - the oats make it creamy. I usually pour a little milk on after dishing it up to cool it down. We sometimes have raisins or banana in to sweeten in but I'm fine with no sweetener. I do sometimes have a spoon of brown sugar on it as it reminds me of being a kid. My 2 are partial to a little maple syrup on theirs too! We mainly eat it in the autumn and winter and eat greek yogurt with berries (fresh or frozen) and nuts or granola in the spring/summer. Enjoy!

UndertheCedartree · 11/07/2020 23:42

Overnight oats with chia is really nice too!

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 11/07/2020 23:51

Cant stand the smell of hot porridge but I eat it cold, dash of water, 3 spoons of goats yoghurt, some cut up grapes and a banana. Delicious.

Love porridge but it makes me so hungry mid morning. Very strange. Since lockdown, I've been making all our bread, adding in whatever seeds I've got. Two slices of toast made from the homemade bread keeps me stuffed all day. Have lost 10lbs since lockdown started and the only major change has been toast for breakfast. So much for low carbing Grin

onlinelinda · 12/07/2020 00:30

I add the seed to the porridge.

Something worth mentioning is that it's good for lowering cholesterol:

I like porridge but for some reason, like other posters have mentioned, it makes me ravenously hungry an hour or so later so can only assume it affects my blood sugar levels which is surprising as it’s meant to be low GI I believe.

And yes, I have the whole oats option with milk, not Ready Brek.

SoupDragon · 30/09/2020 08:10

@Howcanwehelp

Porridge is a weekend only activity here, it takes too long on a work day.
I'm sure I read on MN that you can make it overnight in a slow cooker.

I make mine in the microwave though (oats, milk, a scant teaspoon of honey, shed loads of cinnamon and a handful of raisins)

TheKeatingFive · 30/09/2020 08:14

i dont know why more people dont eat it

I dislike it. It’s pretty much the only food I don’t like.

But agree it’s cheap and nutritious.

Itisbetter · 30/09/2020 08:15

Yup porridge or American style pancakes Wink.

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 30/09/2020 08:17

it used to make me hungry.

purpledagger · 30/09/2020 08:20

I love porridge, made with milk.

I picked blackberries over the summer, which I freeze and add to my porridge. So, cheap porridge posts, milk and free fruit.

Camomila · 30/09/2020 08:30

We love porridge here too, made with milk though. DS1 has it with a sprinkle of dermarera sugar, I like it with honey and raspberries.

I remember when he was a baby I used to put a splash of apple juice in DS1s porridge to cool it down. I can't remember why I didn't use cold milk - maybe it used to give him a rash? All sorts of stuff did.

Cheesess · 30/09/2020 08:31

I have porridge for breakfast almost every day, with half water/half almond milk.
And topped with berries (frozen cos cheaper and more nutritious).
I like the cheap oats, I don’t really enjoy the fancy expensive ones.

BoudicasBoudoir · 30/09/2020 08:31

@sillybean

The reason for cooking it in water is that you can cook it at a higher temperature for longer, thus getting it nice and creamy. Usually needs a good 15 mins with regular stirring.

Milk burns easily at too high a temperature so you can't cook it for as long and get it to the same texture as the one cooked in water.

You can add the splash of milk at the end to make it even creamier and cool it down a little.

Love porridge esp. with with golden syrup. Or strawberries and yoghurt, or banana and cinnamon. I tried a Jamie Oliver chocolate orange porridge once, wasn't for me.

Thank you for that explanation! I’ve always made mine with just water and prefer it, and I’ve never been able to put my finger on why. Now I realise, it’s the texture.

I have mine with salt and cream added at the end.

Can I say this is my most popular thread ever, who knew porridge could have started such a long thread. :-)

i am proud of my dd, ex student, now unemployed, her go to meal is porridge

IceniWarrior · 30/09/2020 08:39

I know this thread will attrack people who know the answer to my question. If I skip breakfast, I can go to lunch. If I eat it, even eggs on wholemeal toast or by themselves, I'm starving by mid morning. Any idea why?

I like porriage. My friend use to put it in the slow cooker over night with milk, cream and cinnamon etc.

Yippeeforme · 30/09/2020 08:57

I love porridge, I make it with water then add cream and honey at the end. But I'll never be able to make it as nice as my grandmother's, she used to put it a double boiler overnight on the solid fuel range to cook really slowly on the residual heat, and it was the most incredible soft texture in the morning, sooo delicious! Maybe it's something to do with the quality of oats too?

MrsToothyBitch · 30/09/2020 09:00

@IceniWarrior I am similar. I used to be very hungry for lunch whether I ate breakfast or not but I really struggled more if I ate breakfast for some reason!

I have quite a late breakfast now and at work often have the main meal of my packed lunch for breakfast and then my yogurt and fruit for lunch. Seems to work but feels a bit weird.

eaglejulesk · 30/09/2020 09:26

I'm exactly the same, but I love my porridge so much I can't skip it. I suppose I could eat if for lunch, but it's not the same.

thegcatsmother · 30/09/2020 11:02

I make it with semi skimmed milk and cinnamon. I might add blueberries. My favourite is with either demerara or maple syrup and some double cream on top.

Giggorata · 30/09/2020 11:13

I make it with water, for the creamy texture, and stir in salt and milk when at the table. Or sometimes salted butter.
DH adds milk and golden syrup to his.

Angelina82 · 30/09/2020 11:28

Jam on toast is cheaper and tastier.

Angelina82 · 30/09/2020 11:31

Or egg on toast if you want to make it healthier.

stayathomer · 30/09/2020 11:36

How about weetabix? Own brand has the same nutritional value as branded and you get 36 biscuits for very cheap!!
