AIBU?

To think someone from Ozark should be arrested

I just watched episode 6 of the first series of Ozark. In it a 15 year old girl is shown having sex with a man presumably aged at least 21. The whole thing is dealt with casually as if it’s a normal thing for the man to have done.

Isn’t this just paedophilia and isn’t it actually illegal to show depictions of paedophilia, even if they are not real? Surely the police should at least talk to someone at Ozark.

Is she serious?

I cannot believe you would doubt the sincerity of a brand new poster, discussing paedophilia, who doesn't seems to understand TV isn't real and sidesteps factual responses in favour of personal attacks.

How did MN get so cynical?

I'm with you OP- what did NASA say when you phoned them?

The legislation around pseudophotographs refers to computer-generated imagery and drawings where there was no real human being.

It does not have anything to do with over-age actors depicting fictional situations, because those show real human beings.

You make it sound like a public school debating chamber. I was just disgusted by what I saw and amazed they got away with it..

That’s fine - there’s nothing wrong with you not liking to see something. I haven’t seen Ozark, but there are plenty of things that I won’t watch because I find it distressing. I just check the content warnings on programmes before I watch them to avoid seeing things I don’t like to see.

Illegality remains a completely different question, and one which simply doesn’t seem to apply here. If, however, you are genuinely concerned that a crime has been committed, you can report it.

@notevenat20

SimonJT Thank you.

So have you reported yourself to the police? After all you have chosen to pay for and to watch child abuse.

@Gwenhwyfar They said if she was 14 or younger it's a different story. I was shocked and social services were also present when this all happened.

It wasnt depicted approvingly. It was depicted as a bad thing and her parents were pissed off about it. Sex between a 19/20y old and a 15y old is a bit sad, usually, for me. But it is not immoral or unethical compared to people who sexually abuse young children. I think you should stop watching this show as you're bot going to like all the (brutal) murder, drug running and money laundering that is to come.

I can't tell if you are real/sincere. But just to repeat, what I am upset about is the popularisation of under-age sex on a mainstream TV show. I hope this is something you think is bad too. I thought it might also be illegal but apparently that's not the case.

I loved Ozark. Some of the best tv I've seen since Sopranos.

I know the scene you're referring to and I think we're meant to feel uncomfortable. I don't think it's filmed gratuitously bur rather shows that for a teen, once support networks are removed and people/places that are familiar and make them feel safe are taken away, there is a higher chance of "bad choices" being made. Charlotte's experience of losing her virginity is sadly a million miles away from what it should be although depressingly common. For many young men it is normal to do that Sad. For me it was similar and the age gap the same.

However I think in the context of the story it's one thing in a line of many fucked up things that happens.

Don't let that put you off the rest, keep watching and stop overthinking! I do however think there is a conversation to be had about why the depiction of abuse, rape and cruelty to women is so accepted in entertainment now. I think many people are so desensitised to it, it barely registers.

Being upset by the popularisation of under-age sex is not a bad thing.

Drug dealing, murder, money laundering all tickety-boo though eh? Grin

Not necessarily immoral or unethical I should say. Depends on circumstances and context at this age. Which is why consensual sex between an 18y old and a 15y is very rarely prosecuted.

Maybe Ozark isn't for you, OP. Brilliant series, but why, if you are so sensitive, are you watching a violent show about Mexican drug cartels and money laundering Confused

The only thing I'm really worried about is how many IQ points we've had to lose reading this.
You are utterly ridiculous OP.

No point having an age of consent then is there?

Er do you really think all of Britain's teenagers are waiting until 16 to have sex?!?

No-one is saying that necessarily good thing but its a thing.

Sorry but what an insane thing to want to happen - the police to talk to Netflix?!

NewNewt The police clearly and rightly distinguish between two 15 year olds having sex and someone over 20 having sex with someone under 16.

It's not an ooops broadcast some illegal content again, bad Netflix. Ffs

Fuck sake this is probably the most crazy thread I have read on here. I can just see the duty officers face when the OP rocks up to report Netflix.

Some people clearly have way too much time on their hands.
