AIBU?

To think someone from Ozark should be arrested

I just watched episode 6 of the first series of Ozark. In it a 15 year old girl is shown having sex with a man presumably aged at least 21. The whole thing is dealt with casually as if it’s a normal thing for the man to have done.

Isn’t this just paedophilia and isn’t it actually illegal to show depictions of paedophilia, even if they are not real? Surely the police should at least talk to someone at Ozark.

I'm not being facetious op, but are you alright?

I'm confused by your argument too. In the scene, Charlotte lies and tells the man she is older than 15. The scene is about her being angry with her parents at the situation she is now in due to their criminal activities. She describes it that way to her mother later in the series, it's part of the story line. A lot of Ozark is about the negative effects that the parents' crimes have on their children.

I would have preferred not to see it but how else could they have depicted it?

There's a whole load of sex and violence shown way before that scene which should have given you a clue as to what kind of programme it is.

Confused

  1. It's fiction.
  2. You do not see anyone having sex
  3. They don't actually have sex - they are acting
  4. The actress is probably at least 16 anyway.

By your argument, anyone who has Netflix should also be prosecuted as possessing indecent images...

Whatever you do, don't watch historical films and dramas. They regularly depict royalty and nobles who were married in their early teens or even younger.

This is ridiculous, surely? Most post 9pm shows now have depictions of murder; should they go too? I can't believe people are taking this seriously. It's not real folks, throw the foil hats away.

I think it’s dealt with in the program, she lies about her age and he also looks younger I guess. I imagine they used that storyline as it’s very common

So do you see the actors having sex, or do you infer it from what you think they are doing?

The actress is probably at least 16 anyway.

She was 18 when the series began and is currently 21.

Erm actually I know someone who was 15 having sex with someone in their 20s , someone else reported to the police but because it's was consented they didn't do anything.

OP I get where you're coming from and have stopped watching shows that depict violence and abuse. It's upsetting and stays with me.

Someone attracted to teenagers is called a hebephile, not a peadophile, which explicitly refers to an attraction to pre-pubescent children

Just read the synopsis and it seems to me that someone's been money laundering so yes they probably should be arrested.

It is a very good show. For goodness sake - read the bible - Mary was about 12, read Shakespeare Romeo and J were about 14. It is not unusual for teenage girls of 15 to have sex and it was part of the story line. In fact the age of consent in the UK is 16 and is 15 in Denmark.

Gosh of all things in Ozark to worry about! Maybe a sub title should flash up when someone gets killed, money is laundered, partners are cheated on, someone is beaten up, kidnapped etc pointing out all these things are not very kind.

Isn't it a good series though! Grin

I have commented to my partner a number of times that the 15 year old girl character in ozark doesn't wear many clothes.

And there are plenty of camera bikini shots and gratuitous shots of her bum. The actress isn't 15 but the character is meant to be!

They should all.be arrested in Ozark shouldn't they?

Ozark is one of the best things on tv.

If nothing else OP, you’ll draw in a lot of new watchers Wink

Ok, this is annoying me.

You cannot possess 'pictures of paedophilia' this is not a thing.

Paedophilia is the name of the psychiatric disorder which a person is diagnosed with when they are sexually attracted to pre-pubescent children.

You can possess images of CHILD ABUSE.

Either way OP as PP have said, it's on the telly, it's not real. You ok hun?

@NameChange84 - but in the film Orphan doesn’t the ‘child’ turn out to be a woman in her thirties with a growth disorder? I think you’re meant to feel uncomfortable at how a child could do this, but it happens right before the reveal that the ‘child’ is actually an adult pretending to be a child. The adoptive father, who doesn’t yet know she’s an adult, also reacts suitably horrified and the scene doesn’t progress into anything.

Oh. I thought this was going to be a thread to discuss Ozark, which we've started bingeing. I missed the AIBU bit. (Misses point of OP).
It’s a fab show Grin

@Yorkshirelass04 I hate it when shows do this. Really puts me off watching them. Just because the actress is older doesn't make it right.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine although the 21 year old could be put on the sex offenders for having under age sex with the 15 year old

Also two years in jail.

MrsRogerLima it's on the telly, it's not real.

People acting out child abuse where the context is that the man has done no wrong is not OK

Well it's not real.

There are real paedophiles though, focus on them and not a fictional show?

Get a grip?
