It’s not really AIBU as it’s my opinion but anyway...

I was at work yesterday and a young woman came in and clear as day had lip fillers. I was looking thinking , I can not understand why people pay to have this done. It looks awful.

You can tell straight away that they’ve had fillers

I assume slightly enhancing them can be a positive in some cases, but some just go too far until they look like comedy lips and over do it.

I was just looking thinking, I bet that woman looked more appealing and attractive to the average person with her own, natural lips!

I felt sorry for her that she was thinking that would make her more attractive....

I dread my DD growing up seeing these imagines and finding them beautiful.

I think they are awful but its mainly because when I see them I just imagine a syringe with an injection of gloop going into their lips. I am less affected/now got tolerance for the swollen appearance. Its the process/ motivation that gets me.

cologne4711 · 12/06/2020 16:16

It's like most (non medical) cosmetic surgery - people don't look younger, prettier etc, they just look like they have had plastic surgery

Completely agree.

doadeer · 12/06/2020 16:20

I do think a lot of these procedures, if you have them when you are quite young e.g. in your 20s somehow make you look older, like that Amy child from The Only Way Is Essex I always thought she was much older than she was because it looked like she was older and has had work to make her look younger, even though she was young in the first place. Very confusing

cheeseismydownfall · 12/06/2020 16:21

I don't like them, at all.

I'm torn, because on the one hand, I absolutely believe that everyone should be free to make whatever choices they like about their personal appearance, and that as long as the individual is happy with their choice then no one else has any right to give a shiny shit about it.

But.

To me, the style of lip fillers to which the OP is referring seem to be done with the purpose of creating an idealised, highly sexualised version of womanhood that is reflected in (driven by?) the porn industry. They are blow job lips. I question whether or not the women choosing these fillers are pleasing themselves, or satisfying a particularly depressing male fantasy.

But perhaps I am overthinking it. As I said, I'm torn.

Personally I just prefer the natural look. I’d find it hard to be a kardashian, I just wouldn’t be arsed to spend so much of my day having make up done.

Moomin8 · 12/06/2020 16:22

YABU, and patronising.

Do you really think this woman cares about your opinion of how she looks? She has it done for herself so mind your own business and stop being arrogant.

TabbyMumz · 12/06/2020 16:23

I think a lot of fashion makes women look stupid. A 14 year old neighbour has stuck on eyelashes that are at least a inch long. Just makes her look stupid, and a bit of a tart. And the phase when women used to hold their handbag on the inside of their elbow and have nails really long and high heels so they cant walk. Just stupid.

Casschops · 12/06/2020 16:24

I wouldn't get them done but as long as the person whose face they are likes them what does it matter.

Starcup · 12/06/2020 16:25

YABVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVU.

**You don't know anything about these women. They could have been bullied about having thin lips (like Kylie Jenner was!) and they could give someone the confidence they've always dreamed of.

Don't be unkind.**

Give over about being unkind- I feel bad for them!!!

Yes, it looks awful and everyone who has it done comes out with the same shite “you wouldn’t know”.

It’s like colouring your hair blonde, you can kid yourself it looks natural but don’t try and convince everyone else.

I blame Facebook and Instagram. Peoples friends telling them what they want to hear. There’s nothing else you can do though.

Mnthrowaway20202 · 12/06/2020 16:25

The problem is that not all practitioners are good at what they do, and unfortunately everyone and their dog are offering filler services at the moment. What looks great on insta doesn’t necessarily correlate in real life.

They don’t need any medical qualifications, it’s practically unregulated. People do a weekend course at a random beautician then start offering training courses themselves?? It’s like the blind teaching the blind as they pass down poor techniques.

I have had my lips done a few times ( including top ups).

After the first 1ml session no one noticed I had them done - not even my friends/family! If anything, they looked too natural to the point that everyone said I wasted my money.

User1775836552 · 12/06/2020 16:26

Picture one is me with fillers, picture two is my sister, no fillers. I had hoped they looked natural. My lips were very thin before, almost non existent and I was always self conscious about it. I don’t regret my choice.

Moomin8 · 12/06/2020 16:26

Kylie Minogue has had a lot done. But it's impossible to know what because it's subtle but she looks amazing now and when spinning around came out, she was noticeably much prettier than when she'd been in neighbours.

The good work is the work you don't know has been done.

Mnthrowaway20202 · 12/06/2020 16:27

*Teaching should say leading, even

RibenaMonsoon · 12/06/2020 16:27

Honestly, it doesn't matter whether you like them. Its whether she likes them.

I personally think they can look way overdone in most cases but it doesn't phase me at all. What matters is whether these women like them and if it gives them more confidence then great.

Its sad that people dislike their looks to the extent that they feel the need to go to those lengths but that isn't for me to decide. As women we need to support each other. Not bitch about changes we've made to our looks to get the confidence we need in ourselves.

Eckhart · 12/06/2020 16:28

@CourtneyLurve

I've never seen a natural looking pair

How do you know?

FlamingoAndJohn · 12/06/2020 16:29

My partner, my kid and my family haven't noticed.

Which begs the question, why did you bother.

I agree that people can do whatever the hell they like, but il still entitled to think it looks ridiculous.

Pomegranatemolasses · 12/06/2020 16:29

What an utter waste of your energy feeling sorry for these women. And i agree with pp, it is patronising.

curious79 · 12/06/2020 16:30

I've had fillers. No-one noticed it outright but I have had comments about looking healthy, fresh and good. When it's done well it's a very subtle enhancement that looks lovely.

So luv - that's why people have them done. Trout pout though - not for me

doadeer · 12/06/2020 16:30

User177

If they make you happy then it's money well spent. The difference between yours and your sisters is the definition in the cupids how. But noone would think yours look bad in anyway! I

catnidge · 12/06/2020 16:30

I think it's a shame that anyone would feel the need to inject their lips purely for cosmetic reasons.

What are we teaching our children about appearance by doing this.

NotJustACigar · 12/06/2020 16:31

I don't like them but the fact I don't just makes me feel old and out of touch. Back when I was in my twenties (in the nineties) extreme thinness was in... that trend was almost certainly even more damaging to women than injectable lips so I kind of think as I don't like it I'll just ignore it and a new trend will come to replace it soon enough.

Twooter · 12/06/2020 16:33

I agree, and also hate the fake eyebrow look. Another one with a teenage daughter, hoping this look will stop soon.

GladAllOver · 12/06/2020 16:34

I think pumped-up lips look awful, just like pumped-up breasts. But if an adult woman wants to do it that's their choice so I wouldn't comment in front of them.

madcatladyforever · 12/06/2020 16:35

They are bloody hideous and completely over sexualised, you might as well have a vagina on your face because that's what they look like they are for.
I have never seen any that have been well done. Yuck.
