WTAF - Far right protests

Poppi89 · 12/06/2020 11:18

I have just heard on the radio that far-right protesters will be out tomorrow in response to the BLM protesters. People are being urged not to be out in support of BLM tomorrow due to the aggressive nature of the far-right group and BLM protests are being cancelled because of them.

I am outraged by this. The BLM protesters are asking for people to not be killed due to the colour of their skin. They have rightly or wrongly made a decision to put themselves at risk of COVID-19 to help spread this message - a lot of people have called them idiots etc for doing this.

The far-right protests are now also protesting in large groups (but not in response to a murder) and are 'known' for being aggressive. How is this acceptable?

I would like to hear from anyone who is planning to join/agree with these far-right protests and their reasons why?

We have a Prime Minister who talked of piccaninnies with watermelon smiles

That was in January 2002.

PinkMonkeyBird · 16/06/2020 10:20

@Clavinova It doesn't matter when he said it. He bloody said it. He is a racist. End of.

Peregrina · 16/06/2020 10:21

What evidence do we have that Johnson has changed his mind about his statement then? By all means cut and paste a post where he says " I deeply regret using such language." , or words to that effect.

Alsohuman · 16/06/2020 10:24

it is foods like those breakfast cereals which are killing the NHS as much as anything else

No it isn’t. It’s lack of money.

Alsohuman · 16/06/2020 10:24

Precisely. There’s no expiry date on racism.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 16/06/2020 10:28

'There have been plenty of caricatures of ethic minorities. Despite the outrage, it still happens.'

The one the guardian didn't Priti Patel was disgusting, but i haven't seen any others. So people are really erecting caricatures of ethnic minorities and it hasn't been reported on? That is actually unbelievable.

Clavinova · 16/06/2020 10:36

Boris Johnson is/was a satirist. His article in Jan 2002 was a satirical piece making fun of Tony Blair's globetrotting antics;

"to see the big white chief touch down in his big white British taxpayer-funded bird."

Peregrina · 16/06/2020 10:38

The 'only joking' excuse. Up there with 'Oh I didn't mean you' when a racist is challenged.

January 2008 -
"I feel sad that people have been offended by those words and I apologise for them."

'evidence do we have that Johnson has changed his mind about his statement then?'

His diverse cabinet?

Peregrina · 16/06/2020 10:50

Yes, I note the typical non-apology preceding it - I am sorry you are upset, blah blah.

"I feel sad that people have been offended by those words and I apologise for them."

Dragged out of him when confronted in a debate. Yes, OK, better than nothing, but not heartfelt by the sound of it.

Peregrina · 16/06/2020 10:53

How many black people does Johnson have in his Cabinet? Even May for all her 'hostile environment' managed to have at least one black person in her Government.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 16/06/2020 10:55

'How many black people does Johnson have in his Cabinet'

Oh please don't go down the wrong type of ethnic minority route. Don't scrape the barrel.

Oh you see some of Johnson's best friends are black....

Alsohuman · 16/06/2020 12:46

They’re not much in evidence.

Devlesko · 16/06/2020 13:08

Johnson, Patel and Gove are all racist.
I am waiting to discover others. They will step on anyone to further their careers, and currently not even trying to be covert in their efforts.

Paska · 16/06/2020 13:27

@Xenia

The ex Labour MP was struck off as a solicitor due to her criminal conviction. I don't think coco pops and rice crispies are particularly racist although both those foods are terrible for your health and if you are of an ethnic minority where obesity, diabetes or anything else makes you more likely to die of CV19 the last thing you want to eat is junk cereal. Instead stick with whole good foods. It is foods like those breakfast cereals which are killing the NHS as much as anything else.
You really will take the tiniest excuse to bash overweigh people, won't you?
YankeeinKingArthursCourt · 16/06/2020 13:41

@clavinova @getoffyourhighhorse

Johnson's 2018 comments comparing Muslim women to "letterboxes" etc led to over 370% increase in hate crimes.
(Article link is very long, apologies). His behaviour, language & attitudes to a BAME population are divisive.

Xenia · 16/06/2020 13:42

Not really. I was commenting on the fact those foods are bad for people.

I think the Tory party does a lot better than Labour with minorities - more female leaders (Labour has not managed even one), more people who aren't white in the cabinet etc etc. Few have done as much against racism in the last few years as the Tories.

Parker231 · 16/06/2020 13:42

There is nothing wrong health wise in eating breakfast cereal - like all foods it should be eaten as a part of a balanced diet. A large bowl of coco pops or Frosties is my go to food for supper if I’m working late.

randomer · 16/06/2020 13:46

God, the cereal police. what next?

Alsohuman · 16/06/2020 13:47

Women aren’t “a minority”, we’re 51% of the population. How many women are there in Johnson’s cabinet?

If the Tory party has done so incredibly well with racism in the last decade, why has it got an openly racist leader? Why did a section of its supporters behave like Neanderthal thugs on Saturday? Finally, perhaps you could give us some examples of its magnificent performance?

SpocksEyebrows · 16/06/2020 13:48

Priti Patel is the daughter of Asian Ugandan refugees, kicked out by Idi Amin. Her father had to abandon his studies there and come to England where he bought a corner shop and worked long hours/ 7 days a week to house and feed multiple extended family members whilst Priti was born and lived above the shop. Her dad eventually owned a few newsagents and paid for Priti to go to Uni. At school Priti was regularly called a PXki. Now she is Home Secretary.

I would imagine that Priti has a great work ethic and has little time and empathy for people who have not got on like her family, whether they are white or of colour. It doesn't make her a racist. People are too quick to bandy this word about in the hope of shutting them up.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 16/06/2020 13:52

Sorry, but this is just laughable.

Best not mention the endemic Islamophobia within the party, and lets just ignore the deliberate ramping up of xenophobia, the Windrush debacle, dog-whistle pro-Brexit propaganda, total indifference to Grenfell and the overwhelming Tory vote against Housing Standards legislation, ending of freedom of movement, the contempt for ECHR etc etc

The Tories are every bit the vile, racist, xenophobic, exclusionist party of the past. The fact they deign to have a few ethnic minorities in the cabinet is immaterial, especially when those people themselves have openly displayed their very own inherent racism.
